Is Special K a 'clean' food?

Kashi is a Kellogg brand. I work for a brokerage firm and was reading our firm's research report the other day and learned this info, I thought it was very interesting.

I would also say no to that. Anything that has sugar in the first 3 ingredients, isn't good. (im not sure if it does or not) You need something high in fiber, some complex caarbs. I would think Special K would be like eating a slice of white bread? Am I wrong?

Interesting, moni! We are living in large monopoly times. There seems to be little competition anymore, because the big companies just buy out the competition. Nonetheless, the Kashi cereals are much higher quality than the cereals that say "Kellogg's" on the boxes.

This stinks!! I just looked at the Cheerios ingredients...and...yup..you guessed it...SUGAR is the THIRD ingredient!!! WTF!??!?!?!?!

I eat Ezekiel 4:9 by Food For Life. It's a sprouted whole grain, flourless cereal which I consider clean. Here are the ingredients for the Cinnamon & Raison one:

Organic Sprouted Whole Wheat, Organic Rasins, Organic Malted Barley, Organic Sprouted Whole Barley, Organic Sprouted Whole Millet, Organic Sprouted Whole Lentils, Organic Sprouted Whole Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Whole Spelt, Filtered Water, Sea Salt, Organic Cinnamon.

They are all very tasty. I find them in my local health food store.
You can go to http://www.foodforlife.com/ and click on the store locator.

I used to eat Special K too and honey nut cheerios thinking I was making healthy choices. While it tasted good and was satisfying at the time, I would be ravenous about an hour later. I am now eating Kashi GoLean Crunch and it is so good I feel like I'm cheating! It tastes like sugar smacks and it keeps me full for a long time.

>I have never heard of Uncle Sam Cereal...can you buy it at a
>"normal" grocery store?

I've seen it in most grocery stores. Just look at the top shelf of the cereal aisle (where they put all the 'healthy' cereals---whereas the sugary, 'candy-like' cereals are more at eye-height for a child.

I didn't see Grape Nuts mentioned! That is good stuff, and can be heated up w/milk for a yummy hot bfast!! :9

The Uncle Sam cereal is decent although a bit bland for my taste. I alternate it with my Kashi for variety and because it is such a high fiber cereal. Grapenuts are good because they take some time to chew and at least in my case leave me feeling a bit more satiated.

I think it's worth noting that just because sugar is listed as 2nd or 3rd on the ingredient list doesn't mean that there is tons or even a lot of sugar. It could mean that there just aren't that many ingredients in the product. Cheerios for example lists sugar as the third ingredient but it only has ONE gram of sugar per 1 cup. That's a VERY small amount of sugar. The ingredients listed after sugar must be infinitesimal. Kashi Go Lean has sugar listed as the **11th** ingredient but it has **6** grams per 1 cup. You can't go by the order in which it is listed in the ingredient. You have to go by the grams and the serving size.

Although it may not be a health food or considered clean, it is better than eating coco puffs or other junky breakfst or snacks. I say if it is keeping you from eating a lot worse, go for it. Melissa

>Oh Yeah...I forgot about Grape Nuts!! They are good!

I agree, Grape Nuts are delicious! They do take awhile to eat though;-)

Great point, Carolyn.

BTW - totally off topic, about your signature quote...I have it all over my office, my house - that is one of my favorite thoughts of all times. The truth of that statement from Ms. Walker just seeps out to me.

I kept seeing this Kashi stuff on the forum but had never come across it. Then when I was doing my shopping online I spotted it but here in the UK it's Kellogg's Kashi blah blah blah. Over here, Kellogg's is a quality brand. Isn't it funny?

Anyway, I ordered some so I'll give it a try!
