Is it just me - or are people REALLY that stupid?

DH and I went to a cove for some diving (he dives, I paddle around on top of the water and follow the dive flag) today. A little hazy, but a nice day. We weren't in the water maybe 15 minutes when this 30' power boat comes in RIGHT AT ME!!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad: DH was under water.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing!!!!!

What do they do? Ask me if there are others around!! I should have yelled at them, called them names, told them they couldn't bring that boat in the cove, etc. SOMETHING! I can never think when I'm confronted with pure stupidity! I told them yes and they just continued on into the cove!!!!!!:mad:

There was also a swimmer in there and he doesn't carry a dive flag! The waves were pretty good sized in the cove and the water was strong. They would never have seen the swimmer!

As they passed, my DH came up - the noise from boats under water is 100 times worse! He saw them and just was so pissed! We were both just dumbfounded. He was ready to leave. It's just not worth risking your life when people do this stuff! The worst part is, that the Coast Guard, nor other divers seem to care enough to do anything about it!

It's just amazing to me.

I have not yet even read your post, but just going by the title, I would say YES, people ARE really THAT STUPID!;)

(now off to read!)

ETA: now I've read it.

IMO, it's not just stupidity, it's narcissism (or however that's spelled!) : too many people these days think only of themselves, and can't even get out of their own heads enough to think of how their actions might affect others (or even care).

After working over ten years in a call center I am convinced that people are very stupid.

Having said that I just figured out from this post that you are that incredibly nice person that follows me on twitter. I would have loved it if you'd have dropped by for some cookies!

 Aw, that's sweet!

It would have been a long trip! I'm in New England! I'm sure your cookies were great! Following your posts and blog make me so hungry all the time! :D

I wish I were that creative a cook!

Yes, Tricia, some people really ARE that stupid and/or self-centered! Glad DH is safe, as was the swimmer! ARG!

My quick story. On our way home from the beach on Wednesday, in a 2 hour-long severe downpour of rain, we were headed into the toll plaza. They are CLEARLY marked which lanes are for EZ Pass, and which ones are for CASH! Different color, different lane, signs well in advance of the plaza, EVERYTHING! 2 cars in front of me, going thru EZ Pass lane when the first car realizes RIGHT THEN that he doesn't have EZ Pass, slams on his breaks, causing the next car and me to do the same. I hydroplaned on the rain, locked up my tires and my car stalled (I drive a 5-speed)! I tell ya......it had to be a HAIR DISTANCE between me and the car in front of me. Somebody was looking over me right then, because I stopped in just an inkling of distance. I said the 'd' word and my kids giggled, because "Mom, you just said a bad word!" And believe me, there were plenty of worse words in my head for the next 5 minutes of driving!:mad::mad:

Okay, you got me- what the heck is the "D" word? I am trying to imagine it, and I have an idea that may fit the situation, but just in case...

I can't believe the coast guard did nothing?! And yes, . . unfortunately people are stupid. What I really hate is when others have to suffer the consequences of other people's stupidity. Someone could have really gotten hurt. I'm glad that you and your husband are okay. You were both right to leave it is not worth getting hurt and I know what you mean about being the "deer caught in the head lights, . . and the shoulda woulda coulda's" When I get so upset I don't always say what I should have said and I often walk away thinking why didn't I say this or that. Don't worry I'm sure another life situation will come where you'll be faced with yet another stupid person. Hugs to you.

beyond stupid my one therapist once said some ppl just have the uncureable case of a$$holism. this qualifies

Does your state require a boater safety course? I think any boaters should be require to know the rules since it is quite clear many do not. Whether or not they choose to follow them or the Coast Guard enforce them is entirely another matter. I have to say since September 11, 2001 there has been a much strong police presence on waters where I boat.

I'm just glad to know you are okay.

:p Dare I repeat it.....damn! lol Not as harsh as others, by today's standards, but in my house, words like stupid and dumb are still considered swear words! LOL

Unfortunately, anybody over 18 can buy a boat, put it in the water and go with nothing more than a howdy-do! There are no requirements of any kind! Unbelievable, especially since we live in the "Ocean State!" Because we've been members of a boating club, we were required to take courses and go through reinstatement tests to be able to take their boats out, so we have more knowledge about sailing than most and we don't even own our own boat yet!

OMG! You must have been terrified, especially since you had your children in the car! I think I would have said something worse than the D word! I'm glad it turned out okay! That could have been so much worse - I hate to even consider!

I am not sure if it is required as yet for boaters in New York yet (if not i know it is in the making) but it is required for jet ski operators. I did take the course when my ex and I purchased a boat and I was glad I did because there are a lot of rules to know, specially in the Hudson River and Saint Lawrence Seaway, both places with shipping channels (to make things more interesting) that we used our boat frequently.

I know what you mean! We have oil tankers coming in up the bay and the ferries back and forth to the islands in addition to cruise ships going by all the time. It's a busy place! I'm amazed there haven't been more boating accidents!

Tricia, having lived in RI myself, the boating situation in the summer is awful! I few years ago I was visiting family down on the beach in South County, tons of people in the water, and these two jet skiers came *flying* towards the shore. They both capsized before they got in - the waves were big that day - and their jet skies were then tossed around in the air right in the midst of all these people, most of them kids. It was really scary to watch. One lady was hit with one!

The funny part was beach-goers pulled the jet skies out and refused to give them back until the police arrived. :) The skiers were ticked! They didn't care though. They seemed to think it was the fault of people who had the nerve to be swimming in the ocean. I roll my eyes.

Oh, and yeah, in general, people don't exercise their brains enough!

The only good thing, when "summer" is over, everyone stays home, that's when we really have a great time! There's no one left on or in the water!

And, amen to your last statement!

I think its a classic case of "people just don't realize". If they aren't divers then they have not a clue! Peggy
