I've lurked around here a little bit off and on for a couple of years, and finally joined the ranks last week. As my username suggests, I'm the mother of a 4-year-old high-functioning autistic son. So I'm pretty sporadic in friendships and forums.

I've been overweight since I got married, at age 18. We'll be celebrating our tenth anniversary next week. I've been working out with Cathe for the past 3 years (give or take) and have lost 40 pounds. I'd like to lose another 10, but mainly I focus on how I feel and look rather than the number on the scale.

I hope I'm able to contribute something to this community, as I know I'll get a lot out of it. Thanks for having me ... not that you had a choice. }(

If you're not too busy, I'd like to get to know a little about you...

Hi Autism Mom,

Welcome to the boards. Happy Anniversary and congratulations on your weights loss thus far. I think it's good you focus on how you feel rather than the scale as it's a much healthier attitude. I've been working out with Cathe for almost 2 years and have lost about 20 pounds. You will find much encouragement and support around here so don't be a stranger.

Hi Autism Mom,
Congrats on your weightloss! Im a slave to the scale at the time being until I get to where I want to be,but I love the fact that you focus on how you feel! Very inspirational!

I was intoduced to Cathe last dec. and have been an "addict" ever since! I started my Weight loss jounrney in the summer of 05' and really kicked it up a noch in janurary of 06 since then I've lost a total of 83 pds and still going:7(still got about 40 more to go) !

Im a full-time mother of two,house wife,and a part-time student in the medical field!

Welcome to the boards! :)

Happy anniversary and welcome to Cathe's forums! I have no doubt that you'll fit right in;). Congratulations on your success so far.

I have a 12 year old nephew with autism so I have some idea of how busy you are. There's a few forum members with autistic children so you might find a nice support group here.

Welcome to Catheland! Congratulations on your 40 pound weight loss. I lost about that same amount 8 years ago and have kept it off. I lost the weight doing Taebo and a couple of years later found Cathe. I also am a regular at a fitness bootcamp that I attend 3 days a week. I'm single, 45 and live in the South.

Welcome AutismMom! I have a very good friend with an autistic daughter so I can only imagine how busy you are! Congrats on loosing 40 lbs and your upcoming 10 year anniversary.

I am 48 and have worked out with Cathe since the early 90's. Running is a big part of my life too, as weight workouts and most all of Cathe's!

This is a fun and friendly forum and I will look forward to your posts...:)

Hi Autism Mom

This is a great place to chat about working out.

About myself: I am a 46 year old married SAHM of 4 kids, and have been working out for most of my life. As far as Cathe workouts go, I brought them into my rotations in 1997 and one or another of her workouts have been in my monthly plan ever since. For the last 18 months running has been my primary cardio activity (3-4 days per week)

I look forward to learning more about you :)

If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.

Hi Autism Mom, Welcome! Congratulations on the weight loss. As Michele metioned, several posters here have autistic children and I hope they introduce themselves to you. I have a 23 year old son with Prader Willi Syndrome. We've been told that some of the behaviors he has are similar to autism. It's nice to meet you.

Hi there and welcome :7

I would, as many, like to drop the last 10 lbs. I have put on as I near the middle of my lifespan (hopefully). Hitting the big 50 in less than 6 months.

With all the changes in my life, divorce and remarriage included, I was a very active, SAHM for nearly 15 years. Having been athletic all my life, and then hitting the "working world" again after my divorce, I needed to get myself back in shape and feeling better.

Started with The Firm which did me quite well. After a year or two the gains were less and less and it just seemed too easy. Saw Cathe on FIT TV, taped a few episodes and was hooked !

For me it is much easier to workout at home as I am quite dedicated and have pretty good willpower.

Don't even remember when or how I joined this forum, but absolutely love the interaction and the people who are here.

Hope you have as great an experience as I have had ;-)

Hello and welcome!

Congrats on your weight loss! I saw Cathe on Fit Tv in 2000, taped all of her episodes. I really didn't get into Cathe workouts until Nov. 06. and was hooked!

Hi AutismMom,

I'm happy to meet you. I too have a son with autism - my 10 year old. He also has several other medical issues. My 12 year old daughter has ADHD which is proving difficult to manage. But still, as you no doubt know, nothing is better than seeing them smile.

I've struggled with my weight all my life. At 5'2" I've ranged anywhere from 165 during the first few years of my son's life to upper 120's during the time of my divorce and subsequent forgetting to eat period. :-(

Right now I'm in the upper 130's, and, like so many, trying to lose those last 10 pounds. But instead of worrying about the number on the scale I'm trying to "eat clean" and focus on getting my body as lean and as strong as I can. I'll be hitting 40 later this year and my gift to myself is a healthy body!

Welcome to the forums and I'm sure you'll get plenty of inspiration, some good laughs, and excellent advice from this interesting and diverse group of posters.

Hi,

Welcome to the forums. It was a pleasure to read your post!! I seem to lose and gain back the same 40 pounds!! I am glad you were able to lose it and keep it off!! :) I did the same thing you did, I married my husband at 19, (I always tell him, that I have been married to him my entire adult life!!).

I looked at your picture trail, your son is a cutie!! Where in TN are you? I will be flying to Memphis in 2 weeks to visit my mom. All I know is that it has been 5 years since I have been in 95 degree weather!!!! The last time we were there was in winter time, we almost froze to death!!

I have learned a lot here, I think you will too!! Look forward to seeing you around!! :)

welcome to the boards! you've already contributed something just be reminding me not to concentrate on the number on the scale - i tend to be a bit of a slave to that.

nice to have you :)

Welcome to the Cathe Boards! Its great to have you here :)
Oh, just one thing, do not ever feel bad if you post something and get very few responses to it. I used to feel bad and thought only the people who have been around a long time got a response...not true.

There are alot of wonderful people here, and sometimes you just do not know what to say!:)

Anyway, so glad to have you.

Hi AutismMom~

Welcome! You asked us to share a little bit about ourselves: I started working out again in Jan. '06 after a hiatus of several years. Unfortunately, during that sedentary, high-stress period of my life, I packed on about 50 lbs. I've lost 30 lbs. since then through hard workouts and subtle dietary changes and would like to lose about 20 more. This summer, I'm working on tightening the reins on my eating a little more. I love running, kickboxing, yoga, and lifting with Cathe and Tony Horton. Oh, and I'm a 33-year-old middle school teacher from NJ. :)

Cathy :)

Welcome!!!

There's lots of parents with "special" kids (I've grown to hate the word "special"). My 19 year paternal journey with my autistic son has been a mixed blessing at times. You lose some friends, family, meet some new ones and the ones you keep are the best friends of all.

If you have any questions about autistic pediatric development, (been there done that) feel free to PM.

My son has achieved everything he has set out to do: Eagle Scout, High School grad (starting community college in the fall) purple belt in karate.

Hi! Welcome to the boards!!

I am not the mother of a child with Autism, but I am the mother of triplets, all who have Cerebral Palsy and one who passed away at the age of 6. I do have alot of experience with families of children with Autismn having worked in Early Intervention for 10 years now and owning an Early Intervention agency for 6 of those years. My congratulations on all you are doing. Taking good care of yourself is such a benefit for your son as well as yourself!! Keep up the good work!

I have been working out with Cathe for about 3 years now. 6 years ago I lost 125 pounds and have completely changed my lifestyle to a very healthy one. I am now working to become a personal trainer and teach exercise classes. I very recently stopped working in EI but continue to work voluntarily as an educational advocate for families, which I will continue to do for as long as I can!

I hope you continue on these boards. I have only been here for a few months but the people here are like old friends already. You will find lots of support and friendship here. Be careful though, it can get addictive...

Welcome! Congrats on the weight loss-you look fabulous. I have been on these boards for years (I check in to read posts about once or twice a day), but I don't post very often either due to busy life (toddler son, 1st grade teacher, etc.). But, as you have already found, you will find tons of excellent information, support, answers to all kinds of questions and more.

I saw your pictures-your son is very cute! I look forward to seeing your posts on the boards whenever you get a chance.

-Jen
p.s. By the way, I am 32, have a 2-year old named Andy, live in Harrisburg, PA, am married to a teacher (also my high school love), teach 1st grade, have a M.S.Ed. in spec. ed. (did one of my practicums in an autistic support preschool), love Cathe workouts (but not always motivated to do them), love to try new workouts too (waiting for my ipod to arrive so I can try cardio coach workouts).
