Interest Poll: what is your religious background?

>a christian. To me, the bible was written by men, and although
>it has some really great stories(and really scary ones as
>well), it is just a book that has gone though countless

I agree with Carolyn and Wayne. (But I respect the rest of you with religious beliefs!) Most of my family have religious beliefs, but I consider myself an atheist. I'm perfectly fine believing that when I die, there is no other life after this one. I just want to be the best person I can be in MY lifetime.

As for politics (even though that wasn't the original question), I'm a registered Democrat, but lately, I've been feeling that neither of the major political parties have our (us common folks) interests in mind. I would imagine that most of us just want decent paying jobs, affordable healthcare for our families, a school system that will educate our kids so that they can grow up and support themselves and their families, and not have to pay half our wages to taxes. And I think we all sympathize with those people who have it tougher and therefore need public assistance, and at the same time feel that we need to feed our families first.

I think our political parties state their positions and divide us on hot-button issues, but in reality the people at the very top are aligned with money and power and really have no idea (or even care) about what the rest of us want.

AMEN(ironic huh?) to that elaineyue! I think it's about time for a new party to enter the political arena!

Hi! It's not icklemoley so I hope you don't mind me jumping in. Just wanted to say that as someone who considers herself an atheist, not believing in God is not the same thing as not believing in anything or having nothing to hope in or for. I have plenty of faith in many things: the power of human decency, doing unto others, being there for family and friends, the endless possibilites in human progress and experience....you get the idea.

I realize that, to a person of faith, those things don't measure up to divine rewards. But to me they do. Just one girl's beliefs :)

Very interesting question, I wish I had time right now to read all the responses! I'm surprised that the first 2 posts had "lutheran" in them! I was raised Lutheran, don't particularly feel one way or the other about it, my sister is now a Lutheran pastor (who works with college kids at a Catholic university on what they feel they are called to do- "vocational discernment") and my parents kind of stopped going to church but are still involved in some of the administrative stuff there. We used to go every Sunday. And Wednesday too, for confirmation, etc.
DH was raised Catholic, although his mom is a Lutheran too. We got married in a Lutheran church in his home town. He liked being Catholic, but I kind of refuse to raise my (potential) children as Catholic. I want to expose them to as much as possible, let them play around with it themselves and decide when they're ready. DH is all for that plan.
We don't do anything religious right now. (Except do Cathe workouts- those I attend rain or shine!! LOL)

The Catheite Party, the party for American fitness! As Sparrow said, the platform will be "Get off your ass!" And for the party conventions, we'll hold a step class!

This is my first post. I have been reading your posts for a couple of months, but I thought this was interesting especially when I came across someone with the same religion as me, I really didn't think it was going to happen. I was born and raised a Seventh Day Adventist just like my husband and my two children 21 and 17 years old. This is an awsome forum. I like the support you give one another. I am now a Cathe fan also, and havea few of her workouts which I do daily alternated with a few taebo ones ( the old ones)

Jesus Christ said, "If you be ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father".

Very well put Karen.

Raised Catholic & went to Catholic grade school through 8th grade. Married someone who also happened to be Catholic and we're both practicing Catholics now. Kids were baptized Catholic and have both received Sacraments of Reconcilliation and Eucharist.

Reading some of this makes me sad. JMHO
I am with Haydee and a few others on this topic.
I believe Jesus died for the sins of man and I have accepted him into my heart. And one day, I will be with him when it is my time to go. I know I am so far from perfect and never will be. I listen to the wrong music and the list goes on, but I know what the Bible says even though there are some screwed up translations others have of it. You have to open up your heart to digest it, you can't read it with your mind. Let God and let go.

I hesitated responding to this thread because religion usually does stir up emotions but decided to be proud of my faith. I was raised protestant but since then, our church has switched to being a non-denominational church. We welcome any & all religions but basically are a Bible-believing church. I do believe in the Bible, it's teachings and that Christ died for our sins. In my Father's house are many mansions and I hope some of yours are next to mine! :7

I went to Catholic school for 10 1/2 years even though my parents weren't very religious. Me & my husband still consider ourselves Catholic and were married in a Catholic church, but we don't go to Church nearly as often as we should.

Wow! I, like DebbieH, was a bit worried when I clicked on this post. But you've all handled yourself with grace and understanding.

I am a Christian and attend an American Baptist church. My husband and I are both very committed to our faith that Jesus is the son of God, died for our sins and rose again to overcome Satan, who I also believe very fervently exists. I also believe that God gave each of us the choice to make for ourselves, and while I am deeply saddened for those of you who don't claim the promises the Bible makes for us, I respect your choice.

Oh, and I was raised by an atheist mother and a lapsed Christian father who sent my sister and I to Sunday School with a neighbor. I searched the eastern religions during high school, but ultimatly found the answers in was seeking in Jesus. Do I still have questions? Yes, there's alot I don't understand. But I expect to have those questions answered someday.

It's obvious that most Catheites have an open mind and are not afraid to to use the brain that was given to them to make their own decisions regarding their religious and spiritual choices. Nor do they feel their beliefs should be imposed on others. This makes me feel GOOD!

Hey everyone -- thanks so much for all of the replies. I find it so interesting to learn about each and everyone of you. I find it even more interesting to learn about different faiths & what makes you all "tick" ;) Thanks for trying so hard to keep this as an informational type post. That was really all I was going for - trying to learn about one another. I am so happy that people have found things in their lives that make their hearts smile :)

It's interesting to see how many of us were raised in a particular faith and yet, rarely if ever, participate in church. I wonder why that is? My husband and I talk about going back to church but it never seems to happen. We've tried a couple of different churches since we moved to our current home, but were turned off for one reason or another then never went back. I really would like to find a good, bible-believing church. I think this thread may have inspired me to search one out.

Oh--I'm also a republican.

Hi Charlotte-
Please don't be sad when you read what others believe. I know that I'm happy and live a completly fulfulling and rewarding life. I'm also happy that I'm different from others and I can accept that.
I'm also glad that you have your religion to make you happy.
I can accept that you believe what you believe and that makes you happy. The same goes for me.
And I can agree to disagree.
