IN TEARS OVER WEIGHT PROBLEM

Cathe, I don't know if you can help me or not, but my metabolism has all but shut off. Seriously, I've always been slightly overweight as a child and teen, and then started using your videos and the firm late teen early twenties. I lost a lot of weight and gained alot of muscle. I rearranged my eating habits and got great results...........then 1 year ago I had my second child and no matter what I do the weight just stays. I'm doing nothing different. Still working out, still eating right, trying to change my exercise often to shock my body like you said. I just don't know what to do. Do you have any suggestions, or have you had similar people in your classes who had this problem and overcame it?

I know you're extremely busy, Thanks,
Adrienne

I know I'm not Cathe, but I feel exactly like you do. Just keep doing what you are doing. I know that is so hard to hear, because you feel like you are doing everything right, and nothing is happening. I started doing Cathe's rotations for the month, and even though I print it out to follow, I still made a calendar to actually write down that I did the workout. I also keep a food journal, and that seems to help keep me on track. Also water, water, water. I know all this sounds like what you are doing, but just keep going! I have noticed a difference finally! I had been at goal weight with Weight Watchers for three to four years, and had no problem taking off a couple of pounds, then all of a sudden the weight started creeping back on, and I didn't feel like I had changed anything! I always did Cathe's workouts and different rotations to shock my system, but all of a sudden they didn't seem to be working. It seems to have made a difference to actually write it down. Probably all in my head, but doesn't this all seem to be such a mind game? Our minds are such powerful things! Keep up the hard work, and be patient, (I know how you hate to hear that) but keep going.
:) :)

I have found that as I have aged my body's needs have changed. I eat and exercise differently than when I was in my twenties and thirties. Really evaluate your eating. Keep a food diary and make sure you are not snacking. Eating off children's plates is notorious. Try to take the kids for a walk to suppliment your exercise. Keep an exercise diary and focus on how much effort you are giving your workouts. Having two children is exhausting.

Adrienne,

My first thought after reading your post was...EAT MORE. Are you getting enough calories? The reason I ask is that I had the same problem when I increased my working out. I wasn't eating enough and once I upped my calories (with good stuff not junk) I began to lose again. Now, I realize that you haven't increased working out, but I still wonder if you are getting enough to sustain your basic needs. If, for some reason, you're not eating enough, your body will hold onto everything that it gets. You should do a google search for one of those basic metabolic rate calculators/daily caloric needs calculators. I'd do the search and post it but I've been relegated back to dial-up and it takes forever.

My dh just read your post and suggested that you look at how you're eating. What he means is for some people eating six small meals works-for others it's three big meals and no snacking. You have to find what works for you. Just thought I'd pass that along--he's quite up on all of that kind of stuff.

I hope something that I said will help.

Blessings,
Sue<><

Boy do I know where you're coming from! I was in EXACTLY the same situation. And I agree with Sue. Eat more! It's terrifying, I know, but try it!

I had lost 99 pounds on WW, then hit a stall that lasted nearly two years (with 50-60 pounds left to lose). Nothing helped. I even gained four pounds, eating at or below the 18-23 point range. I was also exercising 6 days a week--3 days of strength and 6 days of cycling (1-3 hours a day).

Until recently, I didn't know it was possible to restart a stalled metabolism. I thought once you'd messed things up, they stayed messed up. And after 30 years of starvation diets alternated with bingeing, I was a mess. This is the third time I've lost 100+ pounds. How much more messed up can a person's metabolism get? And to top it off, I'm hypothyroid.

But I did find a solution. Eating more! Just like Sue said. I can't believe it's true, but I've lost 18 pounds since I upped my intake of "good" calories! Here are a couple of links on the same topic that I've been involved in.

It's so frustrating when you're doing everything right and it doesn't work! And the worst part is that no one believes you. My doctor even thought I was "cheating!"

I hope this helps. E-mail me if there's anything I can do to help you.

You haven't actually said what you eat, or your weight, job? Stress level? or height or your exercise routine? What is your current diet like? High Protein? High Carbs? Perhaps if you could post these things too then we can see where you're coming from. Keeping a food diary is a must and the same with a workout routine. Keep tract of everything. Everytime you take a bite to eat, think.

Putting weight on is easy, taking if off is harder. But it will happen. Perhaps consider weight watchers.

Hi Adrienne.

I feel your pain! After I had my second child, the same thing happened to me. I finally broke down and saw my doctor with this problem. He drew some blood and gave me a TSH test to check my thyroid. My thyroid tests showed that I was hypothyroid, which means that my thyroid wasn't working well at all ( one of the functions of the thyroid is controlling your metabolism). According to my doctor this happens sometimes after pregnancy because of the huge stress that it puts on our bodies. I was put on synthroid and literally within a month has lost all my extra weight and I felt energetic again!:)

So, my advice is to talk to your doctor and see what he suggests because if it is your thyroid, diet and exercise alone will not solve your problem.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Ooh, Becky, good point! I'm hypothyroid as well. I just wanted to add one thing to your good advice. Adrienne, if you find out you are hypothyroid but still don't feel well and don't lose weight, don't give up. You might need to ask your doctor to try a different type of thyroid medication. Some are very obstinate about using only one particular type. You can find out more about hypothyroidism by visiting About.com/thyroid. But do see the doctor as well.

Hi Adrienne!!

I can't believe I ran across your post this morning. Like you, I have been having a hard time losing, despite whatever program I am following. The past few weeks have been horrible for me, and yesterday when I got on the scale (I weigh once a week) I was up 5.5 lbs!! And no, I'm not due for ttom..........that is coming in almost two weeks. I wrote a post a few days ago about considering a low carb diet, and got many good responses, but I am truly thinking about going to see my dr. Something is just not right. I would encourage you to possibly do the same thing. Last night I went to bed in tears.......it is such a hopeless feeling, but in reality, I'm sure there is SOMETHING we can do. Keep your chin up and keep me posted on what happens with you!!

When I started exercising on March 3rd, it took aobut 4 weeks to see any weight loss that I could tell, I had someone tell me they could see it in my face and neck after about 2 or 3 weeks. It just takes alot of hard dilegent work, and eating right to see results, and lots of water, please don't give up in dispare, its coming, it just takes time and alot of it. I have been exercising now for 16 weeks only missing a few days in the whole time, and I have lost 17 or 18 lbs, have to weigh this week. I am 5'2" and started at 138 and am 121 or 120 now, I just want to encourage you ladies.... and drink lots of water ... just wanted to add, I exercise everyday unless an emergency comes up and I can't ....... God bless you ...... Rhonda :7
