We just met with a very nice woman from the German Shepherd Rescue and we've been approved!!! We've been approved for adoption!!! I've been looking for almost a year now. She brought her dog, . .a beautiful 6 year old German Shepherd named Vadar and he was quite the gentleman! I was so used to being turned down because we don't have a back yard so I didn't get my hopes up. I was starting to accept defeat. I just didn't want to buy a dog I wanted to rescue one and it didn't matter if it had 1 leg and 1 eye. We just wanted the fit to be right and we just wanted a dog to love. I wanted a friend to hang out with since I'm a stay at home mom that is home all the time. I'm so excited I just might cry. It looks like we just may be welcoming a new member to our family. I'll keep you all posted.

Oh, Janie! How wonderful! I'm so happy for you! Sometimes it takes a while to find the right rescue group! I can't wait until you bring your new family member home! I want to see lots of pictures!

Congratulations!

Janie...hooray! There is nothing like DOG LOVE!

Hi Janie,

How wonderful for you! You will soon have a furry companion to share your life with. My Bichon, Wolfy, says "woof, woof" so I guess he approves! hehe!

Happy Sunday!
Pam:D

Janie - I am so happy for you!! You will have to post pics of your baby - fingers crossed that it all works out!

Congratulations! German shepherds are fantastic dogs.

I had no idea you had to be approved. Maybe it's different depending upon where you live?

Nancy...In L.A., the pet adoption process is VERY screened. Remember the Ellen controversy? And I was denied through one lhasa rescue because I answered on the questionnaire that I might have a family in 5-10 years (I'm currently single with no prospects). It never occurred to me that having a family down the road would be an issue for adoption.

It is very strict here. :(

Janie,

I'm so happy for you. There truly isn't anything like a love of a doggie.

Joey and I might get another one during this year, since Molly past away. But we need a little time yet (for us, for Joey) to grieve for our Molly. I'm thinking for sure we'll have one by Fall.

Congratulations! Can't wait for pictures.

Janie

Congratulations Janie! I'm so happy for you!:D
I can't wait to hear all about your new family member, and view all the photos you are going to share with us.;)

Janie...have you ever had German Shepherd's before? They are amazing dogs. So loyal and protective. When I got Willoughby (a Shih Tzu), we signed up for obedience training the minute he turned 6 months. I went to a man who trains German Shepherds for the police force. He also offers obedience training for "regular" people. There were about 20 people in the 10 week class. But it was hilarious to see the little ones (A Shih Tzu, a Maltese and a Cavalier) in the midst of all these German Shepherds and other big dogs. If you ever need any help or have any questions about the breed, I have an amazing contact for you. You could call him anytime.

All the best! We can just feel your excitement on this end.

Jonezie, I had a Shih Tzu (the love of my life), same thing in obedience school, it was so funny, all the bigs dogs would jump over the hurdles and he would run under it. Just thought I would share a nice memory of him.:) Linda

Linda...really? How long was he with you? And what was his name?

The fact that you used the term "love of my life"...we are on the same page! I've had two great loves...a Pek-a-Poo and a Shih Tzu. Astro was with me for 18 years. And Willoughby just turned 1. :) You cannot talk dog love enough with me (Ask Gayle and Rascal). Feel free to PM or post with photos and stories and I'll do the same. I know there are LOTS of animal lovers on this forum.

His name was Sidney. He died of cancer when he turned 7. I found out later his mother had cancer too. It broke my heart. He was my baby. I got him when I first moved to Florida and didn't know anyone. It's been 5 yrs. and he should still be here. I miss him! Linda

Sidney...what a great name!

Ok...this may be a sensitive subject, but have you thought of getting another little boy (or girl)? After Astro passed, I thought I'd never love again. Like I said, I had him 18 years. I got him when I was 16, during a very difficult time in my life. He saved my life, really. As you know, dog love has a way of doing that.

But 2 years after Astro passed, I met Willoughby. Now I tell him all about Astro...and show him his picture. He usually looks at me like "What?" But it makes me feel better.

I wish we were having this conversation in a fabulous restaurant somewhere. We could have a toast to all the dogs we've loved in life. To Sidney, and Astro...and all the other dogs our Cathletes have loved. Here here!!!

Wow 18, thats a long life!!

Well, a while after Sidney was gone, I saw in the paper, a shih tzu that needed a home that was in a shelter. I went down there just to meet him, but he had already been adopted. I was on my way out the door when I saw 2 white kittens out of the corner of my eye. Someone had just put them next to the front door. I would have missed them if they were in the cat room, because I was in the dog area. I left and started to drive home but found myself turning around. I had to have them. A couple months later I added another one.

I never thought I could get attached to a cat like I was to Sidney. But cats are great. I don't think anyone really gets it, until they have owned one. I wish I had all three cats and sidney here as well, they would be best friends.

What color was Astro? And Willoughby?? Sidney was tan and white.

Ok...let's see if this works. I attached photos of both loves of my life below. Astro was black with a white chest and one white paw. And Willoughby (The Willoughbeast) sounds like the same color as your Sidney...vanilla, chocolate and a little cinnamon for good measure.

I know what you mean about the kitties...until you have one, you can't appreciate how great they are. My mom's always been allergic, so...our home is sans kitties. But I appreciate from afar. PS...it was meant to be that they were in the dog adoption kennels. PSS...I had the hardest time adopting a rescue from the Humane Society, too. I would show up an hour before they opened to adopt a dog I'd been waiting for, and the owners would have picked them up or someone at the center would have adopted out over the phone (not supposed to happen). But God love 'em, those people have a crazy love for animals...I'm so grateful!

Do you have any Sidney photos?

:)Jonezie
