Stranger accused of slapping crying child at store

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) - Police say a 61-year-old man annoyed with a crying 2-year-old girl at a Wal-Mart slapped the child several times after warning the toddler's mother to keep her quiet.

A police report says after the stranger hit the girl at least four times, he said: "See, I told you I would shut her up."

Roger Stephens of Stone Mountain is charged with felony cruelty to children. It was unclear if he had an attorney and a telehpone call to his home Wednesday was unanswered.

Authorities say the girl and her mother were shopping Monday when the toddler began crying. The police report says Stephens approached the mother and said, "If you don't shut that baby up, I will shut her up for you."

Authorities say after Stephens slapped the girl, she began screaming.

WOW! Yes, some people do have some nerve!

I have to admit though, there have been times when I have wanted to do exactly what he did - except to the parent not the kid. I obviously have more self control. ;) And like you said, the kid was only 2. It's not like you can easily reason with a 2 year old in the store and get them to stop crying. What did he really expect the mom to be able to do? Has this man ever been around kids??? He'll get the book thrown at him as he deserves. They should be able to get him for threatening the mother as well.

Holy crap! I have to admit I've been annoyed many a time by a screaming child, but that is WAY over the line! I hope that SOB gets the book thrown out him. Maybe getting slapped around a little in Club Fed will teach him a lesson. :rolleyes:

Oh, believe me, he'd be on the floor wondering if he'd ever rise again (in every sense of the word - I have a mean groin kick), and I would be calmly explaining to the police officers that he assaulted me and mine and I was merely giving back. I'd get off and he'd go to jail. You have the right to protect your child.

oh i agree. i can't blame a child EVER even though they are the ones exhibiting the behavior.usually the parents aren't consistent or set in their ways and that gives the kids a lot of room to push buttons in the store.

i have an autistic child and when she meltsdown it gets bad(before intense therapy for sensory intergration). i literally have to carry or almost drag her to the bathroom to calm down. one time somebody gave me crap about in the bathroom i just gave them my salute and flipped my "this child is autistic" card at them. but normally if its viola wanting her way i lay my ground rules which she either gets over the fit in a second or we have to go sit in the bathroom until we come to our "senses". mommy is the parent and mommy makes the rules.

i couldn't even imagine the time my husband would do if that were his little girl! :eek: he has very big issue with ppl hitting kids.

WOW! That's just unbelievable that this man had the absolute gall to do that!!! I have heard of people getting nasty with parents of ill-behaved kids in public places and that's not right but to lay one finger on a child that does not belong to you!?!? I would have gone ballastic on the guy, no doubt! I believe there is nothing wrong with a good whack on the tush when a child is misbehaving but NO ONE has the right to touch my child but me or my husband!!! My own mother won't even spank my son!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek:
 
Unbelievable!!!!!!!!! I can't believe he actually thought that what he did would be ok??? He must be unstable person. If anyone ever touch my child I would be like a Mother Bear and that person would not know what hit them.

well I wish people would cut parents SOME slack. you can't always help it if your child is fussy. They maybe overtired or just had shots. you never know. Although I do avoid stores in those situations they may be there for a good reason (for meds maybe). Stinks when everyone is so judgemental when they don't know you, your child or your parenting methods.

intensityjunkie i agree i try to be understanding b/c i have one of those fussy children and when i tell them she is autistic they really get a look of shame on themselves for being an ass in commenting on her behavior. some ppl still think its a made diagnosis but mostly they understand right then and there and they feel pretty stupid.
