I got to see Hillary!

Hi Clarissa,

That's terrific you got to see and hear Hillary in person! I do like her very much, but will support whoever the eventual candidate is. I don't want to get my $$$ eaten by taxes either but I have other priorities that matter more. I look at the Supreme Court and just shudder...

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

That's so cool, Clarissa! I saw Obama a couple of years ago when he was speaking here in Tennessee for Harold Ford. I actually shook Obama's hand and when I heard him speak, I thought, "He'll one day be president." But I think either Obama or Clinton would do a good job and get us back on track and hopefully restore our credibility with the rest of the world. I just think the whole election is SO exciting. I had felt as if the nation had fallen into a kind of apathy when it came to government because it had gotten so monotonous with the war and our downward-spiraling economy. Now there's an excitement and a new hope flaring and it's great. As for the taxes, I'm preparing myself for higher taxes. We've got to dig ourselves out of the country's terrible debt. I'll gladly pay a little higher taxes if it means that my kids have a more stable future to look forward to. It's sad though, because had my guy won eight years ago we'd not be in this mess so I kind of feel it's not fair that I'll have to pay taxes to help dig us out of it, but hey, that's just how it goes.

Regardless of what your political views are I think its fabulous that the OP got to see a candidate up close & personal!
History is being made regradless of election outcomes.

I am so excited for anyone who gets the experience!

Clarissa, it's so cool that you got to see her!

As far as taxes are concerned, they're honestly the least of my worries. Let's face it, how else are we going to pay for this war if taxes aren't raised? I'm more nervous about being in debt to so many other countries for it. I'm more concerned with social issues, healthcare, and the war and the physical and psychological needs of the soldiers who are coming back after way too many months of deployment.

JMHO

Just wanted to tell Clarissa, it is really cool you met Mrs. Clinton, I think I might fall over if I ever met Bill Clinton (used to have dreams about him -weird)...it would be neat meeting any of the candidates or senators in person quite frankly.

I am just not trusting any of them right now, its tough. I realize I might have come off a little harsh or something in stating my views, we talk alot of politics around our house with all the guys, so I have be get a little "gruff".:)

That's awesome that you got to see her. Being in NY, she's our Senator. I have great respect for her and what she's done. I am voting Obama, however, because there is a lot of animosity toward the Clintons, so I think he has a better chance of getting things done.
As for taxes, most tax increases would be on the super-wealthy who've been getting away without paying their fair share anyway. Their taxes should be raised. And ultimately, I'll pay if it means better education and health-care, infrastructure and police. Just not more war (which is a heck of a lot more expensive) and national debt.

NY25 I could not agree more!

It is PAST time for the wealthiest of this country to contribute more-to give the middle class a break, and for mega-corporations to stop getting off so easily as well. I am ready for a change and I also think that Obama is inspiring. Watching him debate is like a breath of fresh air-he is calm, composed, and doens't seem to play tit-for-tat quite as much. I've definitely had enough mud slinging. Although I like Hillary, I agree that she may not be able to get as much done due to animosity and a long history. JMO! But, whatever happens, let it happen quickly!

Clarissa,

That is so cool! I saw John Edwards at a rally in 2004. It was fun. Everyone was screaming. It was like a "political" rock concert.

Clarissa,

that is soooo cool! I would LOVE to see her at a rally. I went to the Obama rally in Phoenix before Super Tuesday and it was like a rock concert. I like both of them, I think they are both very smart and really want to change things. I hope they will get a chance to do that!

With Hillary I am just worried that she may not be able to get done what she wants to do. There is a lot of resistance about her Universal Health Care plan and Republicans (at least the extreme right) are using the fact that she is married to Bill Clinton to portrait her as a divisive figure.

Me personally, I think she is much smarter than BC, a lot less arrogant and she seems to be genuinely concerned about people, it just doesn't always come across in the media coverage. But I think she wants to do too much, too soon.

That being said, I just keep shaking my head about the resistance to "socialized" health care. I come from a country where EVERY person gets health care, and it works well, no one goes bankrupt over medical bills and everyone gets the treatment they need (no, there are no waiting periods for treatments - you just choose your health insurance carrier, no one can be turned down).

But then again, the cost for drugs are less than 1/2 of what you pay here - WHY? Because they CAN charge it here, in the "free" market, drug companies and insurance companies make billions of dollars in profit and instead of using the money to pay for the people that are insured, most of the money is going to millions of $$ for their CEOs, incentives for the employees to turn down valid claims and advertising/commercials to the general public and to their share holders.

In other words, in Germany and other European countries, the SAME drug companies can charge less money and they STILL run a profit, not as high as in the US but a pretty good profit. Back then, investing in the pharmaceutical industry was always a sure-fire investment in Germany. Go figure!

When I compare the taxes that I paid back in Germany, percentage-wise it was only slightly higher than what I pay here (including health insurance, social security and additional taxes), but then again tax $$ weren't used for a totally senseless war either. We had to pay additional taxes when the wall came down though which added another 3+% of the gross income.

I am sooooo sick and tired of the partisan bickering that has been going on in the US for sooo many years, I just want someone who will be able to get people involved to to take charge of their country, reach across party lines and actually get things done. Maybe not the whole enchilada but get it started. It will be a long road!!

I have to say, I really don't care if someone is Republican or Democrat, I don't go down party lines. I think there are good and bad ones on every side of the aisle. For me, back in 2000 I would have voted for John McCain over Al Gore in a heart beat. McCain is the senator from my home state, I have met him personally on many functions and I always liked him, especially his "Maverick" attitude, however, what I have heard from him over the past few months, he scares the wazoo out of me - say 100 years in Iraq, more wars, thanks but no thanks!!!

I am sooooo tired of the politics of fear. Al Queada, Islamic jihadists, etc, be afraid, be very afraid! BUT we will keep you safe, we have kept you safe. Give me a break!!! We can't even keep illegal immegrants out of the country, hundreds/thousands are coming in every month without us knowing, but yeah, we'll keep Al Queada out.

As far as I am concerned that SOB Bin Laden is still walking freely in Pakistan and sending out videos at his will, making a mokery of us. And then we have John McCain attacking Obama because Obama says, IF secret service information confirms Bin Laden is in that area, we should bomb that remote area of Pakistan, even without Pakistani government approval. HELLO, what am I missing here, are we out to take out Bin Laden, or not???? As far as I recall, he and his network were responsible for 9/11!!!???

Getting off my soapbox now, I don't want to tell anyone who to vote for. And I totally got off track, just wanted to tell Clarissa that I think it was great to go to a political rally.

NY25- I am in NY too and will never, and have never, supported the Clintons. Hilary's plan for health care is dangerously close to socialized medicine.

IMO Hilary is not a good role model; her ambition is too self serving.

Also why do you think the wealthy do not pay their fair share of taxes? isn't greater than 50% enough?

Judy, I am not saying that you are wrong, and I am not really supporting Hillary's Universal Healthcare Plan for various reasons, but what would be the drawback of "socialized" medicine? What do you consider "socialized" medicine?

By the way, the "wealthy" do not pay greater than 50 % of their income in taxes. The highest you pay, if you make $ 350k+, is 35 %, not considering any tax loopholes.

I find it scary that so many people want to elect this truly inexperienced politian, Obama, to the presidency! What has he done? He was a state senator and he's been in the US senate for what, 3 or 4 years?! Oprah promotes him, but he doesn't even have enough of a resume to be the president of her company! Much as I don't like Hillary, if it's our fate to have a Democratic president, I'd rather it be her. At least she DOES know what to expect.

Clarissa- I'm from Youngstown also!!! I didn't go see Hiliary...but I should have, as I really like her. I feel she's sincere also. She probably practically ran the country when her DH was in office cuz he was too busy fooln' around ..LOL!

I live in Boardman right by St. Luke's Church.....where do you live? Were you born and raised here? I was! Good ol' Y-town!!

It's a small world sometimes!

BTW, Just saw an interesting thing on the news. When Obama fans were asked about his "accomplishments" not one of them could name anything.
His inexperience is quite scary, hum, maybe if he gets elected his wife Michelle and Oprah Winfrey will take over and run the country!

My DH and I are considered in the higher tax bracket deal and believe me, we paid up the wazzo this year, you don't even wanna know how much we paid.x(

To the person that emailed me telling me to KEEP MY NEGATIVE COMMMENTS TO MYSELF AND GO FIND A REPUBLICAN BOARD TO POST ON:

I have been a member of this forum for a very long time and have never received an email such as this from another member. THIS IS A PUBLIC FORUM AND OPEN DISCUSSION board/thread. Anyone posting needs to be prepared that not everyone may agree with them and this will be esp true when the subject is something like politics or religion where others have very passionate opinions. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and everyone on this board is free to express their opinions. I was not the only negative poster but somehow you chose to email me. I tried to respond directly to you but the message failed.

I do not choose who I will vote for based on their party, race or gender but rather who I feel based on past experience would be the best to lead our country. Just because I did not vote for Hillary in our primary does NOT MEAN I voted Republican or am a Republican. I will never vote for Hillary though no matter what. Many people like her and that's fine - that is there opinion. If there weren't multiple opinions, than we wouldn't have elections.

That sucks you got privately emailed about your opinions. Everyone does have a right to voice in a considerate way of course their views on any subject.

Seems no one can do that anymore without "offending" someone or something, bugs the crap out of me. I almost did not post my own point of view because of this very reason. I have a little of all parties in my belief system, including bleeding heart liberal..so there. I am just not impressed with any of our candidates.

I can say, good as new! Maybe the thread won't be closed after all....
I'm so happy that I did it. So how are you doing with impact stuff? I know it's bad but I do a little. Just can't not do it! The other day I even ran. Not much, only a mile and a half and slow, but it was definitely running. Only for old time sake. You are very happy, right?
