I got a library card

I feel like a kid in a candy store!!!! I haven't had one since high school. I buy all my books. I'm a fast reader so it gets to be an expensive past time. I just bought and read the 1st 2 Dark Hunter novels and liked them (a little fluffy, but hey) and wanted to read the rest. There are 13 of them (I think) at $8 piece for a day or 2 of reading, that is expensive. So off I went to the library tonight, and picked up the next 3. I get hooked on series (serieses? seri?) or authors then read a bunch of each thing for awhile. This will save me some cash, and give me much more to read. A good day!!

Nan

Good for you! We have a nice library in our little town, but we unfortunately don't go very often. I should take the girls tomorrow.....

I heart the library!! seriously, it is one of my favorite places and we walk through almost every day. so many books, so little time! and movies, and CDs, and periodials... and workouts! although netflix has a larger selection, sometimes i think the library is even better re: workouts because there is no limit to how many items you can have out at once. most are now part of a larger regional network that is online. Ask about it. Where I am, I can log into my account, search the catalog online and request items. Then I get an email when they are ready to pick up. ITA about feeling like a kid in a candy store... i think of it as FREE shopping =)

Also, my local library has a ton of scheduled activities. Just in the past week there was a magic show, an adult book group mtg, a teen movie night with pizza, and concert for wee ones.

Enjoy!

Isn't a library card great? I got one a couple years ago and just started using it more this year. In the past, when I heard of a book or series, I'd run to Amazon, read reviews, then order it. This year I'm trying to save money, so I still run to Amazon to read reviews, but I go try to check it out at the library instead of buying it. Sometimes they don't have the book I want to read, or it's been checked out, and I have to wait, but it's worth it!

Two great books I got from the library were "The China Study" and "The Coconut Oil Miracle", which were recommended on these forums. The China Study is one book that I may eventually buy... or maybe I'll just check it out at the library again!

We have a big beautiful library about a mile away from where I live, and once I started going there, I was really amazed at everything that's available!

Enjoy your library!

Welcome! :D

I use my card ALL the time. I too am a fast reader and I don't feel the need to keep the books I read. So I hit the library often. I go to multiple branches as well. I also use the request service. (Here it's $0.75 per request but it's still cheaper than buying and it goes to something I like to support.) AND I walk/jog to and from the library (a bit over 1 mile one way) for extra exercise. Sometimes twice a week. So it's a win-win-win for me.

For other books I mostly use my e-reader. Lots of stuff - one place

I am much happier in the library and a bookstore than I am in a shoe store (cause women are all supposed to love shoes). There was a library near my last job and I used to go their to pick up and drop off books after work - a few times a week. My co-workers thought it was weird and claimed that I was actually going to a bar instead.

Libraries are my absolute favorite place in the world. We take them so for granted yet in the history of the world they are something of a radical concept: unrestricted information available to the masses. There are still a good many places in the world where this is considered a bad idea. :)

Congrats on the new card!

Isn't it amazing?? I used to buy every book for my children...then, I just started going to library again...tons of books for FREE!! I love libraries.

So happy you re-discovered it!

Once I became a SAHM, the library became absolutely essential! We actually pay the out of district fee to use the Lansing library system. It's fantastic. There is rarely ever a book I can't get through one of their 13 or so branches or through the statewide Melcat system. And, when a book isn't available, I can request it and they almost always purchase it to add to their catalog and I get to read it before anyone else. Books, magazines, CD's, DVD's.... Love it!

I used to live in the library! I would read upwards of 70-85 books a year. Not much, I know, but hey, that was in addition to a full-time job! Now, I workout so much and work so much, that the only time I have to read is the 15 minutes or so right before I go to sleep! Of course, if I didn't spend so much time here . . .:):)

Once DD had required reading for school, I was putting in B&N orders all the time then I figured out to get a library card. DUH me :eek::D

Congrats Nan! Seriously, I don't know people cannot have one. I have five (but I'm a nerd) Many public libraries do so many things....programs such as concerts, plays, workshops for people of all ages, computer classes, book discussion groups, access to research databases and tools, helping people with research and finding even more good books to read. Often times if you can't find something at your library there is interlibrary loan. The world is truly at your fingertips.

Also, many colleges/universities will extend borrowing privileges to alumni. For those of you living in New York state many community colleges will give borrowing privileges to county residents. Anyone residing in New York can obtain a library card for both the New York Public Library and the Queensborough Public Library (Brooklyn Public Library may do the same, I'm not sure). You can everything through the mail so even if you cannot get to Manhattan to borrow a book from NYPL you can access many of their databases online no matter where you are.

Yes, I am a librarian (for a chemistry library) and I am a nerd.
BTW, for those of you in Wyoming I love your library logo:

Another cheer for the library!

Do any of you enjoy online access to your library's catalog? I'm always looking up stuff from home, putting in transfer requests from other area libraries, paging back and forth between the catalog and Amazon to see what's of interest.

Hi Nan, . . I love the library! I just love the smell of books. I can spend hours there. I'm like you. I read fast, . . .and I usually buy my books just because if it is a good book I like to re-read them. I've read the Harry Potter series 4 times already and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn 6 times! If I had an extra room I'd love to have my own library. I hate that our library never has any books that I'm looking for. It is super small about the size of my living room, . .which trust me is small. Still I like to go in and just smell the books and read in total quiet. Enjoy your new membership and remember to check out the DVD's too!

And I thought I was the only one! :D

Libraries are awesome! I used to check out 'books on CD' when I travelled a lot, and of course reading the regular books. When I grew up, I used to have to use our home library because we didn't have an encyclopedia at home, and it was good times there. And it was one of the few places in town that was air conditioned in the summers of upstate ny :)

I do exactly the same thing. I always end up with a very long request list and sometimes the library will e-mail me and tell me that about 7 of the books are available - at once. Yikes!

I would go to my library, except it's very old, dusty, dungeony feeling and a lot of bums hang out in front of it. It's very stand off-ish. But, if I need to go to a library, I usually go to my college library, there's is VERY nice! Not as much stuff there for leisure reading, for that I just buy, but I don't buy books everyday. :)

I only ever use my library's website to find books that I want to read and request them. I love just being able to walk in, pick up my already pulled books, and checking them out. It literally takes about 2 minutes! My library is great, but I don't really like browsing around in there. I can never seem to find anything that I want.
