I always bag my dog's poop, so why...

delfin

Cathlete
...oh why, do people still give you a hard time?? Today, while walking my dog, she stops suddenly and squats, so I pull out my bag and immediately clean up. Well, of course, this lady comes out of her house, telling me she has three girls who play on the front lawn, and my dog should go elsewhere.

I consider myself a responsible dog owner who never, never, leaves a poop behind... but what are you supposed to do when the dog has to go? x( And I just got back from vacation, and now I'm thinking, why the heck did I move to this town. Thanks for letting me vent!

Well, it's her front lawn, and I understand her concern for her children. Just because you pick up the solid poo doesn't mean you get all the bacteria that goes along with it.

Was this her actual front lawn, or the part of lawn that's on the opposite side of the sidewalk? I wouldn't think that you could use the opposite side of the sidewalk without problems.

In France, people are encouraged to train their dogs to do their duty in the gutter, where the street crews can clean it up. Hard to do here if there is parking in the street.

Maybe use the yards before or after the one in question, or the grass across the sidewalk? When I would take my roommate's dog for a walk, we'd always use (well, SHE would use!) the grass near the street (and I would bag it 'to go').

The stupid lady doesn't own stupid sidewalks and the grass in front of em. Just tell her ta go to hel*. She can't tell you what to do. I'd move back to vacation if I were you:+ :+

Take Care,
~Adri;-)

Good morning Delfin,

My guess is you will be getting all kinds of remarks today about your dog. Don't be surprised.

I think you did fine. You were respectful and did what you could. You have every right being there with your dog as anybody else does.

Take care and good walking,

Janie

So apparently there are no squirrels, birds, stray cats, chipmunks, etc, hanging out on, in, or over this woman's yard. How rediculous! I applaud you for picking up the poo. So many don't.

You know I have never had this situation happen, but I think it depends on the circumstance. If a dog is out for an exercise stroll and needs to go well that can't be helped and I woud appreciate the person bagging it up. But if the dog is specifically being taken out to go and my yard (not the sidewalk) was being used for this - even with bagging - I have to admit I would politely ask the person to refrain from doing that. Dogs can poop in their own yard.

Thanks for bagging though. So many don't bother! :)

ETA: just out of curiosity, was the woman friendly about it or did she come out with guns blazing? I find that people are so quick off the mark these days, which just escalates things unnecessarily, when really a polite request and response can usually keep things on a positive plane.

As the others have said - you are doing WAY more than most people do. You are being conscientious

Just remember out in that big wide world of ours, many people still feel the need to complain - whether their complaint is valid or not. I think that lady was one of those.

(Then I wonder what she says to to those who don't pick up the poo !)

Have a great day and continue to walk your dog - to heck with her :+

I wouldn't worry if this is only a one time thing with this lady. You did the right thing in bagging the poop. Geez, she couldn't ask for more. BUT, if your dog goes on her lawn on a regular basis when on her walks, the lady has a right to complain. I always try to pull my dog out to the side of the road if she really needs to go. But, quite often you just get caught in a bad place when your dog needs to go. Not much you can do at that point.;-)

Now let's talk about the dog poop and horse poop left on the middle of the trails that I bike on...Oh! that's another thread in itself. LOL!

Ahhhh nature, now sanitized for your protection....I think that whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad...
It was very kind of you to pick up the poo, when children or anyone else plays outside I think the conventional wisdome has to be that they will be coming into contact with bacteria and stuff (ie, nature) and that is why when we go in, we wash our hands.
Soon, no one will go outside without donning a hazmat suit. It's amazing that the human race has lasted so long!!
I was raised in the seventies when aparently dog poop was everywhere, I know not how I survived!!

Sorry to be so sarcastic, but sometimes I feel like some folks go out of their way to make others feel bad. You picked up poo for gosh sakes, what more does the woman want??!

p.s.
Folks used to use manuer based materials to fertilize their lawns, now thank goodness most have changed to using dangerous chemicals in-stead.

Ditto everything you said--everything!:)

i actually don't blame the woman. the fact is, even if you do pick up after your dog, you certainly don't pick every bit of poop each time. there's almost always going to be some, eh...... residue left over. you would probably not be happy if some neighborhood kids walked all over your lawn or dumped their trash/cigarette butts/coke cans on it? (this happens in my neighborhood all the time, so don't get me started) poop is definitely no great step up. well, you should consider training your dog to go at the curb rather than on other people's property.
just a note for you: i grew up not too far from rye, ny, the address you give in your info. as far as i know, property owners there are responsible for the sidewalk and the grass at the curb in ny, so your dog shouldn't use those areas as a bathroom either, they're technically the responsiblity of the property owner. with my dogs, we always put them out in the yard before we walk them, so all their poop is on our own property and doesn't bother anyone. if you have a yard, this might be an easy solution for you.

Hi

Just curious if you've walked this path before and had no issues? Maybe she was having a bad day herself and unfortunately took it out on you and your poor dog. Maybe she feels just as bad now for yelling about it? Who knows. Hopefully everyone can get past it. It's a great thing that you pick up after your dog, several people don't. Could you have your dog go in your lawn and then once finished, take him/her for a walk? I don't own a dog so I'm not sure of their system.

I shovel my dog's poop out of my yard, but I never quite get all of it. Plus, this woman may not know your dog and if he/she has worms. I would guess that is her concern if her children ever run around barefoot.

I think you did the right thing by picking it up...more than what most people would do. I also think this lady could have been polite about it. From your post, it sounds like she was pretty nasty. There is no reason for that...especially since you were picking it up!

I don't know about you other dog owners, but I feel like I have no control over where my dog "goes" when is out for a walk. When he decides to go, he goes. There is no moving him or pulling him. I always clean up after him, but I do admit to worrying that someone will yell at me some day. All I can say is, I do my best. And I agree with the poster above about sanitized nature. It cracked me up. Oh, and he could be out in the yard all day and not go, but after about 10 minutes on the leash it never fails! Time to poop! I figure that is why God made plastic grocery bags.

I knew I'd get the gamut of replies with this post. Our dog poops in our yard, but something about the walk (long one, about 1 hour) gets her insides moving, if you get my drift. I suppose I could try to get her to poop in the street, but I think it would be even harder to pick it up, somehow, as it's not really "resting" up on the blades of grass (too much information, I know). And then there'd be residue for kids playing there, too. Maybe I should try to walk her with kind of a doggy diaper on, so as not to offend anyone? (Ooops, sarcasm creeping in here.) I think the bottom line here, is dogs are animals. Yes, they can be trained, but sometimes, when they gotta go, they gotta go. Thanks for all the replies, everyone. On a positive note, back from vacation, couldn't wait to do a Cathe workout!! Missed them so much when we were away.

I am a dog lover and have a beautiful 9-year-old German Shepherd (his birthday was yesterday). While I do my best to be respectful of others and their personal property, there is only so much that can be done. If your dog is pooping in the same neighbors' yards repeatedly then yes, that could be a problem that you could solve by taking him on different routes. However, if it varies and he hardly ever poops in the same yards AND you went to the great lengths of picking up, I say that is the best than can be expected of you and you are a responsible doggie owner. And yeah...like someone else said in an earlier post...what about birds, rabbits, squirrels, etc.? I guess they NEVER poop in this lady's yard and your dog is the very first animal to do so. Tsk tsk. Not much you can do with people like that except ignore them altogether or kill them with kindness and explain that you cannot control nature's call and you are doing all you can by picking up the poop. If that still doesn't make her happy, to heck with her - at least you tried.

Just a question out of curiosity, how come the dogs are on other people's property in the first place? I mean, if we are talking about the edge of lawn between yard and sidewalk, I get that, because as others have said, sometimes the dog starts to do his business so what can you do? But if the dog is on of those long leashes and doing his business six feet into someone else's yard, I don't get it, maybe because it's been years since I walked a dog? If I had to guess I would say that the lady probably wasn't offended by the poo so much as the unauthorized use of her property. Poor dogs though, who wants to poop in the street?!

Sparrow, exercise moves bowels. So you can take your dog out in your yard and they may not feel the urge. But getting them walking, and out it comes! I would avoid this person yard, cross the street, whatever. So many dog owners don't clean up after their dog, you probably got the vent from someone elses dog's mess.

Wow, that's harsh.
And FYI, the woman certainly does own the lawn in front of her house.
