I always bag my dog's poop, so why...

I agree with the poster who wondered why dogs are allowed to take walks on other people's property. I understand that dogs need exercise and that you can't always stay on public property. But, try to see it from the perspective of the non-dog owner. We have three young children. I don't allow them to play on other people's lawns, just out of respect (unless they are our friends). And I certainly wouldn't allow my toddler to run around without a diaper on, poop on a neighbor's lawn, then clean it up. Even if I cleaned it up, you would think that was disgusting and incredibly rude. And you'd be right! Well many non-pet owners feel the same way about pets. To you it's no big deal for the dog to poop on someone else's lawn as long as you pick it up, but to many that's just an invasion of your property. It's not only the picking up issue at hand, it's the issue of being on someone else's property and using it has a bathroom. Even if it's picked up, it's still offensive to many.

I hope I've given you a bit of perspective from the other side. :) Thank you for listening. Heather

I don't walk my dog in people's yards. I am using the sidewalk, but dogs don't usually like to poop on the sidewalk, they prefer the grass. They like to walk along, sniffing, grass and trees as you go. So it is not like you are in some else's yard wondering around, you are using the sidewalk and passing by.

It is much easier to get all the dog poo off grass then the concrete sidewalk or street. I'd rather a dog did his/her business in my yard then on the sidewalk in front of my yard. This is just my opinion though.

I know you're walking your dog on the sidewalk. I understand that. I am only trying to share the non-pet owner's perspective. Even though you are walking your dog on the sidewalk, they still walk onto someone else's property to go to the bathroom. Even though it seems no big deal to you as long as you clean it up, it still is a big deal to a lot of people. I love dogs, really I do, but I honestly don't want other people's pets using my lawn for a bathroom, even if they clean it up. I understand where you are coming from, though, and hope you will see my perspective, too.

Thanks, Heather

I live in a subdivision of rather expensive homes. We have small front yards and backyards and 2 fifty acre parks on each end of the community. We also have 2 huge fenced "dog parks". Even so, there are those in the community who do not clean up after their pets. There is a city ordinance requiring it! Around the community there are pocket parks with plastic baggies provided for free. My solution to the rudeness of pet owners who do not clean up after their dogs was to put little clip signs along the edge of my lawn that say "Please, no pets" For some reason this has worked very well and doesn't cause conflict. I realize that this penalizes all pet owners. Honestly, since I have chosen not to own a dog(s) I'd just prefer not to have to deal with anyone else's either. As far as other wildlife pooping in my lawn . . . well I cannot ever recall stepping in squirrel poop, bird poop or rabbit poop and noticing that I had. Dog poop is an entity unto itself!

You know, I totally get that if a dog needs to poo, it needs to poo. Seriously though, does it have to occur on my lawn as I'm standing right there? I love the people that know nothing about some form of discretion. Also, having a pile a poo by my front door (when we clearly have a whole lawn) does not make me overly happy. Am I up in arms about it? Nahhhh, sh&t happens. Grumble a bit and move on w/ your day ;)

My springer spaniel likes to poop when we walk too, and it's not something you can stop once they squat. But I never walk him on other people's grass, we stay on the street as a courtesy to the homeowners. I appreciate it when others "don't" walk their dogs on my yard too, but I wouldn't run out and yell at someone for it either, unless it was a daily problem. (one of my neighbors has a big black lab who squats over the top of some of our bushes. That's a lovely thing to see perched on top of a bush!) Now THAT's irritating!x(

I've owned dogs for 15 years and it's amazing how rude people can be when they see you walking by their house, even with no poop or pee involved. Once I was walking my dog in front of a house and he stopped to smell a bush that was by the sidewalk. (Not preparatory to peeing, just sniffing a high part of the bush. Dog owners will know the difference.) From inside the house came this screeching old man's voice NO!!!!!! YOU KEEP THAT DOG MOVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh it was super embarrassing, the whole neighborhood could hear it, it was awful, I felt like crying and running away. And my dog had never gone onto that man's yard, he was just sniffing a bush! And another time I was walking my dog ACROSS THE STREET from a house, and the homeowner drove into his driveway and screamed at me "EXCUSE ME, DO YOU HAVE A POOPER SCOOPER FOR THAT DOG!!?!??!?!?!?" I did, and we were ACROSS THE STREET just walking. AND another time a guy had his garage door open, and HIS dog ran out to attack MY dog, and in the garage I heard the man screaming at his wife "That lady walks her dogs by the house EVERY NIGHT and it drives Bowser crazy!!!" I feel like some people just hate dogs and wish they lived in a dog-free world. I've had people in cars stop their cars and ask if we left some poop in some other area of the neighborhood. I walk my dogs an hour every night, so I guess we're pretty conspicuous, but I always pick up after them and I'm sick of being on the receiving end of so much hostility. I guess it's a territorial thing, the guy over our back fence had his sprinklers aimed so they hit our back fence and both my husband and I get furious about it LOL. I guess we want OUR TERRITORY kept safe from intruders or something, so that's maybe where a lot of homeowners are coming from.

I can't poop on command, I poop when my body tells me it's time. Dogs are the same way. I can put my dogs into the yard and they might not have to go, a half hour later they might have to go when we're walking. I wish people could be a little kinder and gentler. We don't have kids and plenty of kids have walked across the edge of our yard, asked to go into the back yard to retrieve a ball, made lots of noise on a quiet afternoon, and I don't go out screaming at them.

Amen, and I don't see dog owners walking their pet up to someone's front door so their dog can do their business. The grass between the sidewalk and road is city easement. There are no dog parks in our town, so people walk their dogs. If they don't pick it up, shame on them. We have more issues with dogs running free than this.

I truly would prefer my dog to do it at home, so we don't stop on a walk. But that does not always happen. I will keep talking to her about it thought....maybe someday she will understand.:7

2 of mine always have to go while we are on walks. They are NEVER allowed to go on other people's lawns, driveways, etc. Actually I don't let them walk on the lawns, etc. I don't let my male mark people's bushes either.

Who knew poop would be such a hot topic! :p

I thought when I gave up my career in nursing that, once and for all, I'd heard the last from little old ladies who are fixated on their bowels. Then I come to the Cathe forums and what do I find but middle-aged women who are fixated on their bowels. And now it seems we've come full circle...:7

Oh ewww, I knew there was a reason I don't swim in lakes. And all I could think of is the kids playing in the water washing into the storm sewers after a hard rain. Yuck.

I think that you did the right thing. At least you cleaned up after your dog. I have neighbors that do not do that and their dogs have taken a liking to my yard, sigh..
I have taken my dog on a walk and she tried to squat in someones yard. I yanked her out of it and she went in the street. Maybe you can do that? But like you said it's more difficult to clean up.
It's frustrating when you try to be a good person and still get people upset. Maybe the next time you take her on a walk, use the oposite side of the street if your dog hasn't done her business yet.
Good Luck!

I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago in my new neighborhood. The lady told me she watched and I didn't pick it up. I told her she was a liar and moved on because I take great pains to pick up my dogs poo. Now, I just avoid her yard to keep the peace.

I don't understand comments about dog bacteria behing left behind. Considering there are so many more other bacteria, bugs, and chemicals people treat their yards with...give me a break!

And, by the way, I once called the county about dogs pooping on the easement and they say that the homeowner doesn't own the easement so you're only picking it up as a courtesy to them. Hell, I see more catpoop laying around than dog poop!

Since we're talkin' poop...

You ain't seen poop 'til you've dealt with Canadian Goose poop. Sure, those buggers are real purty to look at, but when they hang out at yer house for a few days, their true colors start to show (if ya know what I mean). They poop as much in a "sitting" as my Boston Terrier did, poop everywhere, and the real kicker...it's green!

I'll deal with dog poop any day. :+

I don't get people - you picked up the poop - move on - there are worse things out there that I can think of.....

That lady probably was just having a bad day and if you don't own animals, than you are not as understanding. I personally have always gotten along better with animal lovers!

Wanting strangers to keep their dogs off your property doesn't mean you hate animals or that you are a crabapple. It means you want people to respect your property. And, in the end, it doesn't really matter if the woman is crabby or if the dog prefers to poop on grass. The bottom line is, if private property owners don't want dogs on their property by two feet or twenty feet, leashed or unleashed, poopin' or just sniffing, then they are well within their rights to make that clear. They own the property and there is no universal easement for dogs who want to sniff and poop on grass.

The sidewalk is a different matter, of course, because that is *not* private property.
