How to maintain lean muscle muss but burn fat?

Not Cathe, but a reply I read in a fitness book at one point was that to lose fat you must reduce cals. While reducing cals it's is very unlikely you'll gain any muscle mass as the requires excess calories. To maintain muscle during a calorie restriction, it is best to increase your protein ratio and continue to lift heavy so as not to lose any muscle gains. Who knows if that's the way to go, just something I read and thought I'd pass along.

Hi Sally!

I have no idea when Cathe will answer. I hope you don't mind me chiming in w/an answer.

Tom Venuto, a natural bodybuilder states in his e-book Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle that its physiologically impossible to burn fat & build muscle at the same moment in time. You have to concentrate on one or the other. In your case, its to lose bodyfat. In order to do that, you need to know what your caloric intake right now is & reduce that by 500 cals. You need to do more cardio.

If you have 6 days to workout, I would suggest you do 3 cardios a week + 3 total body strength training days per week alternating between the two. If you only have 5 days, then decrease the 1 total body weight lifting day. Or if you rather for 6 days do 4 days of cardio & 2 weight training days.

How does this sound? How does this sound Cathe?

Hey, guys

I've done this a few times (lost weight and maintained muscle) and here's my take on it...

Cut your calories only very slightly...say 300/day. Eat clean and get plenty of protein every day. Increase your cardio but limit it to short, intense bursts. Interval training or tabata protocol training is ideal, but don't go over 45 minutes in any one session. Stay fuelled and don't go hungry.

You must continue to do weight workouts...Gym Styles and Slow & Heavy are ideal.

Of course, if Cathe says something different, I bow to her greater wisdom!
