How much sugar is too much?

I'm just curious b/c I love fruit!!! (especially apples and grapes) I try to eat clean and keep my daily ratios around 35-45-20, but what percentage of the carbs should come from sugar, even the natural kind? Just curious if anyone knows.:D

I would like to know too. I love fruit too and in the summer I love to eat frozen grapes (!) yummy like ice cream.

It seems I've read that fruit (fructose), even though it isn't a processed carb, is still a simple carb and gets into the blood stream relatively fast. Not like white bread or sugar fast, because of all the fiber, but still pretty fast. Since fruit is all carb and doesn't provide a lasting effect on the blood sugar, and trying to keep your carbs about 45%, I would treat fruit like a treat. I try and keep my carbs at about that, 45-50%, and find it pretty hard to do.

Non fruit items I aim for less than 5grams and then it also depends on the other contents of the food. I really don't worry too much about fruit. I follow BFL so eat 40/40/20. I do know some people who find too many servings of fruit stalls their progress so they limit it to 1 serving a day.

i don't worry about the sugar that is in fruit... it's healthy food.. so i eat it! the only one i'm careful about eating is watermelon cuz of it's glycemic index. oh..i also limit myself to one banana a day for the same reason (plus calories).. but they are SO healthy! and i love them in my cereal or oatmeal!

oh... i limit grapes too.. for the same reason... high glycemic.. !

I don't worry about fruit, and I AM watching my sugar and glycemic response. It doesn't seem to bother me.

Cereal by the way is extremely high in the glycemic response arena, even if it is a non sugar variety. Cheerios is terrible! Just in case you didn't know!

I probably eat 4-8 servings of fruit a day and that includes ALL fruit, watermelon, grapes, bananas. I gave up worrying about the glycemic index when I got off the Zone diet. Fruit didn't make me gain weight at all in fact the opposite as I have lost 20 lbs in the last couple of months...:)...Carole

Carole--I like your response the best!! 4-8 servings a day:) :D :9 I love it!!! Watermelon has definitely been in abundance this season and that's one thing I just can't resist! Every time I start eating it, I can't stop!! Everyone tells me that it's ok b/c it's only fruit--but there's a lot of sugar in there! I just look at it as my way of getting some "natural" water. I know there's a lot of that in there b/c I have to run to the ladies room every 5 minutes after eating it!!!:p

Thanks Ashley...as I have taken on a vegetarian lifestyle, I really had forgotten how good fruit was!! I have found lots of fruit has "natural" water. I have the same love for watermelon! I am wondering about what in the world will I do in the winter... x( not much watermelon....but we will still survive....:)...Carole

It always makes me laugh. What is wrong with fruit. Mother nature provided us with it. Eat it. It's cleansing. It has fibre, vitamins and minerals. It's easy to digest. It makes me so mad that were told to eat 6-11 servings a day of grain and yet only 2-4 of fruit and vegetables. I think it should be the other way around. Fruit and vegetables came before grain. Evolutionaly speaking.

Wayne - the Canada food pyramid calls for 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and 4 to 5 servings of fibre/grains. What pyramid are you talking about? ARe you from the US? Because if so, I didn't know the American food pyramid differed from the Canadian
