How many calories does your HRM show you are burning us...

For some reason my heart rate monitor will not work when I am doing the workouts. It may be due to the electromagnetic interference with the t.v. It did register that I burned 200 calories this morning when running 3 miles. Does that seem accurate when my HR was around 145?
I have 2 Q:
1. How many calories does you HRM say you are burning during the various Cathe workouts?
2. Does 200 calories seem accurate for a 3 mile run?
47 years old and weigh 125
TIA,
Gin:)

I average on a Cathe w/o about 9 cals per minute... 70 min lowmax = 600. (Thats the average for me which includes warm up & workout but not stretch)

200 seems a little low for pretty much any weight if you ran the whole time. I've read several times that a good average number is 100 calories per mile, and that is accurate for me when I run.

Running is the highest calorie burner for me. I burn fewer per minute typically with Cathe, but that is likely because I start the monitor at the beginning of the workout and stop at the end. Obviously, my heart rate is not high during warm up and stretch.

Do you moisten the strap before you put it on, and is it tight enough? I've found I have to have a really moist, tight "seal" to get it to work properly. That's not typically a problem about two minutes into it :p

I recently bought a heartrate monitor and I was actually really suprised how few calories I actually burn. I think we all overestimate how much we actually burn(JMO) When I run for 30 minutes I average about200-225 calories, whereas I thought I was burning at least 100 calories for 10 minutes. It is the same for my step workouts, I average about 50-70 calories for about 10 minutes. I am 5'7 and weigh 136lbs. It was a really eye opener for me.

I try not to wear it all the time because it gets a little obsessive for me. Even when I am at the gym and do the elliptical it is about 300 for about 40 minutes and no more. I think we cathe followers are so fit that it is hard to really keep our heartrate up the whole time consistently. A lot of the workouts we do are interval and the heartrate does go down for a period.

Anyway, I would find your calorie burn to be accurate according to my experience.

Hi,
I have a Polar M32 HRM. For instance, me doing a Cardio Coach workout (about 40 minutes) on my bike (and for me, it's more intense than any of my Cathe step workouts), I only burn a little over 200 calories. I'm 47 (48 next week), 122 pounds. I'm always in awe when I read about these mega calorie burns! My highest heart rate during a level 4 is 164, so don't know if that has anything to do with the low calorie burn either. My HRM also doesn't work right near the TV so I don't use it with my workouts. Bummer. It will either just stop on whatever # it is on, or go to "0" for a while.

Gin, I am the same age and about the same weight and I burn between 415 and 440 cals for a 3 mile run depending on my pace. Cathe workouts vary depending on the workout. If you have a specific workout you want to check, I can check my logs to see how many cals I burned...:)

Edited to add I run with a Garmin 305 Forerunner that tracks alot of data...

I used to have an M32, but my calorie burn was also low. Now, I have an F11 and it seems like I'm running as high as everyone else now. Gin, it sounds to me like yours may be a little low. I knew in my head that it is just a number, but I wanted it to be higher. It's a nice incentive for me. So, I guess I'm being an enabler, and suggesting that you may want to try a different HRM.
