How many are using non toxic cleaners????

By any chance did you use 2 different cleaners in the same vicinity? I ask because mixing bleach w/ ammonium can produce cyanide gas. That would definitely cause a headache!

I found this post to be useful. I used to clean "green", but haven't been. I am going to start again. Thanks!

Yeah...I know. My bet is that most of these supposed "friendly" have chemicals in them that are not good to drink. Sad really....

Hi Beckynd,
I used straight up bleach.! Wanted to desinfect my bathroom! When mixed amomnia, it can form toxic cloramine gas. Bleach can irritte the skin and, when ingested, the mouth, estophagus(food pipe),and stomach.Bleach was involved in the most frequently reported exposure noted by Poison Control Centers in the United States. There are so mamy bleach alternatives.

>Hi Kathryn,
>what are the names of cleaners that you buy in the health food
>store?

I use some "Ecover" products (toilet bowl cleaner, for example) and "Earth Friendly" products (dishwashing liquid. I've found Earth Friendly in a local seed and feed store as well!

I've been using mostly non-toxic cleaners for years.

Another thing I just found for odor removal (in the air or on surfaces---so safe it can even be used ON pets and people): Pureayre . No animal testing (unlike Febreeze) and smells wonderful--just a hint of mint.

Another thing I forgot to mention, and I don't know how I forgot, because I use this most of all: microfiber cleaning cloths. They are wonderful! And for many jobs, you don't need anything but water. Just a spritz of water on a window or mirror, and these cloths do a fantastic job. Soak them in water and wring them out, and they can even clean up cooked on spills on the stove top. Very absorbant, so also good for cleaning up spills on the kitchen floor. The ones QVC sells are very good.

this is very intresting,I'll start using some of these products mentioned! I have little ones and what's better for there health,I'm all for it!

I switched to Shaklee just a little while ago. My mom used to use it when I was growing up, but I kind of got away from it when I moved out. I love the Basic H - I use it as a fruit and veggie wash, too, so it's really a great multipurpose product. I don't care for it on glass and mirrors, but I can use vinegar for that, so it's no biggie.

I think it's a great thing to do as part of a healthy lifestyle - try to switch things over to natural alternatives and cut down your (and your family's) exposure to chemicals. It's also great because it cut down on the numbers of bottles under the sink - I used to have a different product for everything, now it's just two spray bottles that I can use everywhere. Cheaper, too, since I don't have to buy all those specialty products anymore :)

FYI, Shaklee has a disinfectant product, too - Basic G (germicide) and vinegar has some good properties, too (can't remember the specifics, but it creates an environment that's not friendly to bacteria) If you look into it, there are good natural alternatives for just about everything!

After looking at them I think they are friendly. The tub and tile one is non toxic and biodegradable, naturally derived, never animal tested. The ingredients are naturally derived solvents and essertial oils. I don't know. What do you think? The All Purpose cleaner ingd. are purified water, grease cutters ( made with natural minerals, grains minerals and naturally derived surfactants ( corn/grains )and oils.

I am not an expert but I would definitely contact them for MSDSs. With an MSDS you would know exactly what was in each product that you use. If you are happy with the contents listed, then I guess you could continue to support them as a customer. I guess what I am saying is that the choice is very personal :).

I love Clean House, Clean Planet :D :D :D I get the big packages of baking soda from Costco, some Dr. Bronners from the health food store (I clean EVERYTHING with that, lol), gallon bottle of white vinegar, and some TTO and I'm good to go! Even Martha Stewart recommends natural cleaners! They work and I don't feel queasy about what my kids touch :)

I love Clean House,Clean Planet, too. I bought baking soda I think 10 lb. is less than $5. I also bought a big bottle of white viniger Heinz) in Costc.for less than $3. I use Dr. Bronner or Murphy Pure Vegetable Oil Soap. I switch back and forth! Murphy Oil soap is alot cheaper, and cleans beautifully.

I use Method and Caldrea. Method you can get at Target and other stores. Caldrea you can get from some "boutique" type houseware stores and from them directly (www.caldrea.com). They also make the kitchen products sold by Williams Sonoma. Caldrea is a little more expensive, but they smell fantastic!

This is a timely post! I have just recently decided to try to be a little "greener". I purchased some seventh generation spray cleaner and toilet bowl cleaner and am pleasantly surprised at how effective they are. They are, however, much more expensive than my usual ammonia. I also purchased some "all natural" feminine pads after reading about the products used in the big name ones. I don't think I can keep buying those , though! I think I paid almost $5 for 12 pads:-( . - same with the toilet paper - 4 rolls for 4.99. That's alot more than what I get at Sam's.

I'll have to check out some of the suggestions made!:) Marnie

Here are same of my altermatives recipe I make:

All Purpose Cleaner

2 Tabelsp. white vinegar (Heinz or organic)
1 teasp. borax
10 ounces hot filtered water
1/4 cup liquid soap ( Dr.Bronner or I use Murphys Oil)

Mix vinegar and borax in a clean 16 oz. spray bottle. Fill with water and Shake until the borax has dissolved. Add liquid soap and shake to mix again.

This one I think cleans better than the commercial cleaners!

Or:

All Purpose Cleaner

mix hot water with baking soda until frotinglike in a sray bottle
put orange zest or lemon zest
fresh lemon juice or orange juice
5 drops lemmon essetial oil

put in the frige after use!

Glass Cleaner:

put club soda in a spray bottel- thats it!

Basic Soft Scrubber:

1/2 cup baking soda
enought liquid soap to make a frosting like consitencey
5 drops antibacterial essential oil (lavender, tea tree oil. rosemary

pour the baking sodasin a bowl slowly pour the liquid soap stirring , until all the the consitency reaches that fo frosting. Scoop the creamy mixture onto a sponge, wash the surface. and rinse.

Happy cleaning! Belinda

I looked into shaklee products, but noticed that they are very expensive. My question how long does these products last?
Thanks Belinda

>I am with a company called Melaleuca. They have cleaning
>products that is very earth and child friendly and does a good
>job.

Their products look interesting (I especially like the wrinkle remover, since I don't iron!), but I couldn't find any info on their site regarding animal testing (most places that don't do it are proud to advertise the fact, which makes me wonder). Do the products have anything on the label that says 'no animal testing'?
