how many animal lovers out there?

I have a 14 year old spoiled kitty named Johnny and 2 goldfishes that are like 10 years old - who'd a thunk they could live that long :D

We just lost our lab of 12 years to cancer.
Currently we foster animals until they are old enough, or well enough to go up for adoption.
We also petsit for anyone who asks!
I volunteer at my local shelter where I walk and socialize the animals and other shelter tasks.
I'm a HUGE animal lover. Freak, you might say.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.

We have one dog. A funny little Havanese named Domino. I also have an Appaloosa named Ranger.

I have two human children and 8 fur-children. I have 2 dogs (yellow lab mix, and newfoundland/cocker spaniel mix), 3 cats (Japanese bobtail, tabby, tortise shell), 2 parakeets and a cockateil who just recently passed away :-( All of which were from a local animal shelter, given to me, or were just dropped off at night. I also volunteer at a local animal shelter.

Problem:

I have a huge question about one of my dogs (yellow lab mix) that I cannot seem to find a trainer for. She is highly aggressive with other dogs, except the one she lives with. She wasn't always that way, but she was attacked twice by another dog and she has never been able to come out of it. Now she attacks first without any warning. She has put another dog in the hospital with two puncture wounds. I cannot find anyone who can or will help me. She is a great dog, and it seems ashame not to be able to take her out for walks in the neighborhood, (just in the yard or places where we know there aren't any dogs), for fear of her losing control. It doesn't seem like much a life for her, not to be able to run and play freely at the beach with us or go camping and stuff like that. We have been to every trainer within a 50 mile vicinity, and no one would help us. I have read every book out there and have been to alot of sites and practiced some commands. I was consistent, but when I had to actually put it to the test, I was afraid she would attack and I would not be able to control her. The last time we went for a walk, and she wanted to get loose to go after another dog, she turned around and tried to bite me?!? I moved just in time so she only nipped my skin. The older she gets the more mellow shes getting. But my concern is that she is teaching our other dog these similiar behavior patterns. My local animal shelter suggested I put her down. I couldn't believe they didn't have any better suggestions than that. As a matter of fact, I was appauled they didn't have any trainers they could recommend.

Ok any advice would be greatly appreciated. We love her sooooo much..:) Thanks

I'm sorry about your dog. There's a place in Denver called the Denver Dumb Friends League. They have people who you can call (they actually have to call you back depending on how busy they are - usually a few days) and they will try to help you over the phone with ideas. I have no idea if it will help you, but worth a shot. They only ask for a donation.

In the meantime, have you considered a muzzle for her so that at least she can go out with you and you won't worry?

Good luck!

Suz

Not all dogs are "dog friendly" or dog park friendly. It may be a workable situation and may not be. Until you know for sure, please do not give her the opportunity to be off leash around other dogs.

If she is redirecting onto you, this is serious. I would go to www.apdt.com and find a trainer in your area to work with.

Bret, my Dobe, does not go to dog parks. He is not nice at dog parks, but he leads a very fun and active life just the same.

Currently have a black lab, a giant schnauzer, an outdoor cat, a harlequin macaw, blue fronted amazon and a red tailed boa. Lost our black throated conyer and peach faced lovebird recently.

And then there's my two monkeys - they are teenagers.

I am the local "crazy cat lady" - although I am only 31 :)

I had 2 cats for a long time ... then 3 when a stray adopted us ... then a feral litter was born in my backyard and I took all 5 in w/the intention of adopting them out - fat chance!! Then I trapped their parents ... so I now have 11 kitty babies (and one human on the way!).

Then there'so the feral colony they came from which I am now maintaining by trapping/spaying-neutering/and releasing ... so at least another dozen who eat on the porch ... just a little crazy, right :)

This is SOOO me too!! I have such a huge mushy heart for cats. I fix all the cats that cross my path though....doing my part. Controlling the population!:D

I'm glad you didn't say I was super crazy ;) and i'm glad you fix kitties, too! between us we'll have prevented thousands of babies ...
