how long did it take you to learn lowmax?

Omigosh I'm having a terrible time learning this one. I don't do that much step, maybe that's why, but I've learned some of the other step workouts alright.

Any suggestions? Totally stuck on that step-sweep thing where she does a lot of it backwards to the camera.

Doh!

;-)

I found it easier to do the cardio only premix when learning the choreography. The first time, I tried the whole darn thing. I was getting really frustrated, so I decided to focus on cardio only.

Is the "step-sweep thing" the reverse mambo on the board?

Bella,
SLOWMOTION on the DVD player is the way to go! Then you can watch it slowly, do it slowly, and gradually speed up. Watch her feet closely and see which ones she is using and which side of the board she's using as well. Keep left/right--front/back in mind to learn it, and then it will become automatic after awhile. Just give it some time and definitely check out the step only premix which lets you learn the more difficult choreo moves w/o being tired from the blasts.
HTH,
Mattea

I got it down about the third time I did the workout. I watched it first, then tried it. I just rewind until it get it down. After the third time, the moves started to flow.

I am a "Just Do It" kind of gal. I tripped all over the step the first few times I did Low Max, and it was only this past week (I've had the video for a while now) that I FINALLY got that step sweep. I was so proud of myself. I will actually say the words. "Step Knee, triples up and around, Step Sweep, Pivot, basic..."

I have a friend who has to get every step right before she can do the workout and she has had a lot of difficulty with this one. She rewinds and does it over and over until she gets it right. I find the footwork harder in LowMax than in any of the IMAX's.

There were a few moves that it took me a while to get down (including the "step sweep"), but I got most of it the first time around (but I've been with Cathe since Step in Motion 3, so I'm used to her moves, and I preview before doing, and pay special attention to moves that look tricky: counting them out in my head.) There are a few places (about 3) where I don't think Cathe cues well enough for you to get the moves on the first time out.

For the step sweep, one of the "secrets" is to keep alternating the foot you put weight on, rather than doing some kind of regular pivot move, where you don't change the foot that has weight on it as you turn.)

I'm still learning, but I've gotten much better. I still end up on the wrong foot a lot, but I try to keep it fun and not be too hard on myself. Her coreography is really starting to click with me on all of the step tapes and they're really getting to be a lot more fun. I never did complex coreography before Cathe...so this is all new to me. I always did a different tape every day and never had time to learn fancy footwork before.

I tried the step only combo from Low Max and quit after becoming lost on the Over Face in Over move. I need to take Mattea's advice and try it in slow motion! I'm determined not to give up on this DVD, as I've heard what a great workout it is! :)

I think I knew this one fairly well after about 3 attempts...I found some of the moves a little on the tricky side but it's a lot of fun once you get it down! :)

Thanks guys. I found the slow-mo button and worked on that for a while. I hate to waste my precious workout time stopping and re-doing but I guess it's the price you pay to learn it.

When I do get it conquered it will be one happy day!

:)

Bella,
Try setting aside 15-20 minutes at some other time during the day to "learn" a lowmax step section. This way you don't have to let it affect your regular workout and taking it in pieces is much more manageable. Then, when you've practiced enough try using it as a workout again and you'll only have the occasional stopping point. Wouldn't want to give you too much rest time;)

It's the triples back and around that gets me every time. But part of that is all that "twilling" makes me dizzy right now. I think it's combo 3 - I'm determined to get it one day! All the others I have down!

Think of it as "step, step, triple, triple" That might help.

I agree that you should try the step only premix or blast only a few times or just do the workout a few times and you'll learn the steps. Low Max is such a fun workout and really a leg burner too. I think Cathe does a really good job in LM with doing the combos a few times to help pick up on it better.

I did the triples in my step class, but she called them a waltz. It's kind of a step, step, hop-turn, hop-turn, step, step. I thought maybe it would help you to think of it as more of a waltz than a triple...

The secret for me is to stop LOOKING at her, and just follow what she says. I guess that's why I exercise at home...because I don't always get the feet right. I figure I work just as hard whether I'm starting on my right or left foot.
At the beginning, I did a lot of the premixes- I liked the 45 minute ones that go 1-4 and 4-7. It helped me learn it pretty quickly. I still have to do a hop-skip sometimes to get on track.

Bella, someone suggested to me to use the workouts you're learning as a warmup to something you know well, so that you are learning something new and still getting your cardio. For example, I am learning Step Blast but am definitely not quite choreographed yet to get a good cardio workout from it, so I tend to do a few of the segments and then switch to PowerMax (which I know and LOVE!).

Good luck!

Don't give up! I was going to sell mine but the lady who bought some other workout from me said she already had Low Max....so I decided to try again ...... I don't know what happened, but...I did it and it is my favorite workout!

What other step routines of Cathe's do you have? I'm interested, because I might try others?!

I did the step-only premix without a step to learn it. I pretty much got the cardio down on the second try doing it this way. Adding the step was a little different, but since I had the moves down already, the adjustment was pretty simple.
