How long did it take you to get in shape post-baby?

I'm 5.5 months post-partum. I am close to my pre-pg weight, but nothing looks right. My pants fit (yay!), but my tops don't due to an unsightly roll around my waist. I'm eating fairly clean (Eat to Live guidelines about 90% of the time), but I still look pretty awful, to be honest. Is it really 9 months up 9 months down? If so, should I just relax and give it time or do I need to really kick it up a notch? Just looking for advice from those who have been here. Sigh . . . (FWIW, I am breastfeeding.)

I am 6 mos post-partum and I am almost back to my shape. I still need to loose about 5 more lbs, and some fat around my hips, but for the most part the stomach is flat and I am in good shape. I was closer to my pre-baby weight and size, but I injured myself and now need to have knee surgery so my cardio is limited to only walking. I don't always eat good (yes I eat pizza) so I think if I cut that out I would loose this last bit. I don't know how much weight you gained, but I only gained 27 lbs so I did not really have that much to loose.
IMO if you are eating well and still not getting to where you want to be I personally would do more cardio at least 5-6 days per week for about 45-60 mins. I also highly recommend bootcamp. I too still have a little roll, but I have talked to many other mom's and a lot have said it does really start to go away more at about 8-9 months. Give it more time, I think it will go away. Remember what the Dr always said "you did not gain it over night, you won't loose it over night!".

I hope that helps! Hang in there!

Good Luck!

Hi there.

Not everyone needs 9 months to get thier figure back but I did. I gained about 35 pounds and at 9 months post partum I was back to pre-pregnancy weight and, to be honest, my figure looked BETTER than it did pre-pregnancy!

Sure, I have loser skin on my belly then I did before, but after workin' out religiously to Cathe and concentrating on my eating, I found my body shaping up to look better than it did before so relax! :)

When I was where you are, I still had a long way to go before I "got my body back". Everyone is different. Don't let it get you down. Keep pluggin' along and as long as all of the elements are in place, you WILL get your figure back...and maybe you too will find that it's better than before!!!

My baby's first Birthday is tomorrow and I now weigh about 4 pounds less than I did pre-pregnancy and I am wearing the pant size I wore in HIGH SCHOOL! I haven't been this size since...well....HIGH SCHOOL!!!! The BEST part is that I weight 15 pounds MORE than I did in High School! It's the muscle...muscle is a beautiful thing!:)

Edited to Add: I was a size 7-9 pre-pregnancy. I recently went shopping and bought a few size 4's and a 6.

HTH! :+

I was back to pre PG weight about 6 weeks after having Aiden, but not really "in shape". Plus I had some weight I wanted to lose. To really be in good shape I think it took about a year PP. Give yourself time! I know it's frustrating, but the cliche of 9 up and 9 down is really somewhat true.

I never had a weight problem until I had two pregnancies back to back. I didn't gain much during both pregnancies (about 25 lbs) but I had a heck of a time losing those last 10 pounds after DD #2 was born. At first I just did yoga and Firm workouts. It wasn't until a year later when I started doing Cathe that those last 10 lbs finally melted away.

Also remember that as long as you are breast feeding, your body is going to be holding onto extra fat to help with milk production.
I found that even after I had lost all the weight with my last baby and I was back to prepregnancy weight (after about 4 months), it took another 5 to 8 months before my body looked "right" again. And this was with working out with Cathe all through the pregnancy and starting up again a week after baby. I know that it is difficult, but with a little patience and hard work, I think that within a few months you'll start to see more results.

Good luck!

I agree with Becky. My third child nursed until he was 15 month and it was after he quit that I finally dropped the last 5-10 pounds. I always tried to keep in mind that the weight came on over a nine month period and I needed to be patient getting it off. Once Sam was weaned, it was very quick to go. But enjoy nursing as long as you can. It's such a great thing to do for a baby. :) Sam is my only boy. My two daughters weaned earlier than he. You actually burn more calories while nursing, which is great. Of course, you need to consume more so you can keep up with your babies diet. Enjoy that while it lasts!

I'm just over three months PP. The weight I gained during the entire pregnancy was lost in six days. However, my body shape is not like it was. I had two c-sections, so my whole ab area still is a "ball". I'm sure it will go down more, but it's frustrating. I eat clean during the week, but the weekends are another story. My current goal is to strengthen my core and do additional cardio. I am also bf and plan to continue for anther few weeks.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses and encouragement. Like a lot of you, I have lost almost all of the weight and that didn't really take that long or even much effort. But my shape is just kinda funny and my stomach is soooo squishy. I can live with it--not like I am scheduled for a SI swimsuits issue photo shoot anytime soon--if I have it on good authority that the 9 mos up 9 mos down thing isn't an old wives tale. I am a pretty lazy person by nature, and I abhor the thought of knocking myself out when things are on their own time table anyway, kwim? My diet's not awful but exercise is erratic and will continue to be until DH starts daycare next month (trying to write a dissertation and take care of a 5 month old doesn't leave much time for working out.)
