How do your store your Workout DVDs?

With the prompt delivery of Xtrain, I realize I'm running out of space in a huge cloth covered basket filled with Cathe & a few other workouts. My baskets are covered to look like magazines but hold valuable items.
How do you store & organize your DVDs?

I have an exercise room (doubles as laundry room & food pantry). When we remodeled the room, we put kitchen cabinet bottoms along the one wall and covered with a counter top. All my dvds are stored in there, as well as shoes and other items. My TV and fan sit on the counter top.

It was all my husband's design to better organize me!!

We have two living rooms--one was added on by previous owners. We use that one as the workout room. I have 100s of workout DVDs and I have them all stored on bookcases in the workout room. However, I am running out of space! I have two small bookcases filled and the workout TV stand is filled--all with workout DVDs! I need another bookcase if I am going to keep hoarding workout DVDs.

Mine are in their own special closet that's in my exercise room. I keep them in their orginal cases and have them lined up on shelves, grouped by instructor.

Half of my garage is converted to my workout space. Against the wall I have an old Irish Sideboard/buffet that is about 7' tall. The upper part has shelves that were for displaying plates. I store my dvds on those shelves and on the buffet part I have my flat screen TV. It works wonderfully. I love my workout space.

I am just thankful that I live in California where the weather is mild enough in the winter to workout there.

I have a DVD cabinet in my living room, where I work out. Its supposed to hold about 250 but with slimcases and multiple dvd cases for like workouts I can get a lot more in there. The cabinet is black, and about waist high. I usually have more workouts stacked on top, lol.

I also did a craft project today. Since my Xtrain workouts come in one big dvd case, I emptied individual cases and made covers for each of them with red and black markers so they stick out. I learned my lesson last Cathe series when I left them in the box and then forgot I had them so I didn't so them often, so eventually I made orange and black covers for them.

I have two memorex travelcase cd/dvd cases that hold 48 dvds each. I got them in a target store and they hold 2 cds/dvds per page, one per side. I organize my cathes by system and most used in each system. I also have a few non-cathes that I stick at the end of one of the cases if I have room. I store all of the original dvd cases in the large bottom drawer of the entertainment center in my workout room and keep the 2 memorex cases on the shelf below the dvd player.

I used to keep all my dvds in their original cases and just pop them out when I needed them. But the frequent popping in/out of the dvd case caused my imax2 to crack around the center hole. I had to replace the dvd and then I eventually moved to an apartment and it was impossible to store all of the dvd cases, so I switched to my new storage method. I think it's safer for the dvds to be in sleeves in the memorex cases and my entire collection takes up very little space.

I don't have as many workouts as you girls do. I have a small media shelf thats filled with VHS tapes (lols), and between it and my book case, I have this narrow spot I have filled with all the DVDs in their cases. I have most of Cathes (except STS and CTX). I also have many Jillian workouts, Leslie Sansone (just 3 of those), and Kathy Smith. Its a good thing I kept them, because now that I'm recovering from having been ill, I need those easier workouts again.

yes, amber dawn, this is a good idea...I had to replace my Supersets/Push Pull dvd because the exact same thing happened to me...I was so bummed!

However, I like being able to just see all my dvds on the shelf so that I can decide which one I am going to do. I know it would be safer to store them as you do, but having them out helps me to decide.....I am wondering if I could convert????

I've thought about this too. Sometimes it's tough to get the DVD out of the case and I worry about it cracking over time. However, I'm like Tracy, I have to look at the cases to make my decision every day. I don't do rotations, or even plan ahead what my workout will be. My method is to stand in my closet and look at what's in front of me. Fortunately I have plenty of room in that closet because I do have a lot of DVDs, all in their original cases. (I also still have all my VHS, even though I don't have a VCR anymore!)

My husband and I added brackets/shelves to the wall of my workout room which is in the basement; they take no floor space and are inexpensive, and it's easy to add another shelf (which I may need to do soon!).

You ladies may think I'm crazy but I never keep any of my cases. I dont like clutter. I throw away all of the cases. I'm surprised I still have the Xtrain case. I went to staples and bought a nice big leather/nylon dvd storage binder. Each sheet holds 8 dvd's 4 on each side. I have all my dvd's in there. I have all of cathe's dvd's firm dvd's micheal jillian chalene johnson kelly coffey p90x. All in one place. I love it. It zippers shut too so no little sticky fingers in there!

Jeannemarie,

I also have 2 favorite FIRM vhs tapes that I haven't been able to get rid of...I only do one of them from time to time...Tough Tape with Tracie Long. That is still a really good workout and I keep my old beat up vhs player just for it. I haven't made myself get the dvd for Tough Tape. But I am thinking I may just bite the bullet and get rid of the player and the tapes and get the dvd because I still like the workout.

I am like you in that I generally just like to look at my dvds and decide that day what I am going to do. I keep in my head what I have done for the last few days in terms of weights or cardio...

I keep 90% of mine in the entertainment center underneath the DVD player. They are ordered by instructor, followed by cardio vs strength (circuit workouts go in the cardio group), followed by alphabetical order. The sets (like STS and Rushfit) go in their own special section in the bin storage unit where all the exercise equipment is. I also keep all of the user guides underneath the sets. I know....it's very OCD! I just hate being held up from working out because I am looking for something.

Oh, I always keep the cases too so that if there is ever a reason I might need to get rid of them, they will be easier to sell on ebay or somewhere. It's one of the reasons too why I rarely purchase the downloads.

Thanks for starting this thread! I've been wanting to rearrange/design my basement gym for over a year, but although I had loads of desire, I lacked inspiration. A couple of days ago, as I was standing down there thinking about how my DVDs are stored (In a TV strand) and how I might do better, WHAM, it hit me how I could reorganize my gym. Within 30 seconds everything was laid out and organized into an very functional, organized space (well, in my head...the hard labor is under way). Best of all, it's mostly going to use items I already own.

You never know where you'll find inspiration, and I thank you for mine!
