Hi all-

I have border line high it is 200 and I was told they like it lower then 200.

I know eating oatmeal is good for you, and according to the commercial so is "honey nut cheerios".

But what else can I do?

My blood pressure and blood sugar levels are good, so is the amount of O2 in my blood.

So I need t work on lowering my cholestoral(sp?) and my weight and bmi.

Hi Just got my cholestoral in good range.I did it by watching dr.oz on Oprah. He has a book out call You on a diet? I don't have the book but you can go to Oprah site and find out more. What work for me was exercise(weight loss),red meat only once or twice week, fish twice a week, veggie day twice a week and steel cut oatmeal 5 days a week ,cook with olive oil as much as possible not grease. Also he ha s a drink recipe using flaxseed oil that I drink almost daily. Also fish oil is suppose to help with cholestoral. And I started eating some soy products. But my best advice is to google cholestoral you will find wealth of information also great sites. There one call REAL AGE that is pretty informative on overall health.

Do you know what the breakdown was? How much LDL? How much HDL?

If your HDL is high, I really wouldn't worry about it. Work on raising your HDL (it takes lipids from LDL and transports them back to the liver...good) Niacin does this. So does omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil capsules)

A low fat, plant-based diet with a good amount of natural fiber, along with regular exercise. It will both lower your cholesterol and help you lose weight.

Also, Caldwell Esselstyn's "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" has good info about a heart healthy diet, and will help you understand it.

If you are looking for info on the web, be sure to look under the correct spelling: "cholesterol".

Last summer I read the books Super Foods Health Style and Super Foods Rx. Both are good books. The author recommends adding ground flax seed and wheat germ to your oatmeal or yogurt or smoothie, etc to help lower cholesterol. My DH has done this and it helped lower his.

Good point. My husband went from a little over 200 to 146 in 6 months after becoming mostly vegan. His doctor was floored.

Hi there,

I, too, got my cholesterol down even more by removing red meat and hydrogenated oil, adding flax seed oil, more fruits and veggies, more fish. I also went organic ~ about 85%. I'm not a complete vegetarian, however, I got my cholesterol down. It's the lowest it's ever been (total=169, triglycerides=29, HDL=70, LDL=94). At the highest it was in the 300's with the LDL always being very high. I was also seeing a nutritionist and taking his vitamins. However, that got pretty expensive and now have switched to Shaklee's vitamins and cholesterol lowering supplements. I just started with that. So, hopefully I can keep my cholesterol where it's at and stay away from Lipitor! ;-) Throughout the ups and downs of my cholesterol, I've always worked out 5-6 days a week. I was almost resigned to the fact that I'd be on meds the rest of my life.

Good luck. :)

And sometimes it can be mean ol' genetics. My friend who is vegan and a runner still has cholesterol issues thanks to the family. However, that doesn't mean one shouldn't do all they reasonably can.

Eat a lot of high fiber food (fruits, veggies, beans)
Make sure you get enough B12
Make sure you get enough "good" fats (I usually put a tablespoon of ground flax seed in my morning smoothie)

Came back to say that I gave up dairy...well, mostly. Still have an occasional slice or 2 of pizza once in awhile. However, no milk (didn't like it anyway), cheese (still use feta in my salads) and I use a vegan butter from Trader Joe's. I drink soy and rice milk now. The cheese was the toughest. Now I don't even miss it. Oh, I still have egg whites in the AM.

Also, want to agree with the other poster about genetics. It definitely runs in our family.

HTH!

Agree with flax seed oil recommendation. It is easy to pop a few of those and it is great for your skin too.

Drinking green tea instead of coffee can also help.

Oatmeal (a whole food) is much better than Honey Nut Cheerios, which is highly processed. I am sure oatmeal is the best for cholesterol.

Hope this helps
