I occasionally have McCann's Steel Cut Oats (I usually prefer Coach's Oats) and when I do, I make it in the crockpot. They are not as chewy this way, but I choose not do all the extra work involved in the preparation and still get the nutritional benefit.

I do use my super mini-crockpot for cooking the steel cut oatmeal only because I like them hot in the morning and I'm basically lazy

. I found by using crock-pot liners or spraying the crockpot ahead of time and using 1/4 cup oats and 1 cup water with sea salt...there isn't any clean-up at all and it only requires one bowl (lazy Robin). (When I'm ambitious, I sometimes put cut up apples in it the night before and add the walnuts and cinnamon in the morning.....it comes out delicious.) When I'm done, I just put the itty biddy crockpot in the dishwasher (you know, I am certainly not going to wash it by hand). Otherwise, like you said, it would he!! to clean. It's no work at all...just the way I like it
HTH for other lazy people like me who like to eat healthy,
