Holy WOW, Batman!!!

Thank you all so, so much. It really means the world to know that so many people are pulling for my sis. Janie, my sister also had a PICC line inserted so she doesn't have to get stuck with needles every two weeks, plus one of the chemo drugs actually goes home with her in an IV bottle for two days.

I can't even tell you how much I love and admire her. Her strength and good humour in the face of all this is absolutely astounding.

...and that is what will help her get through this. Sending prayers and healing vibes to your sister, yourself, and your family. Please keep us posted.

That is a crazy amount of money. I am one of those PhDs doing the research (ophthalmic pharma so it is on a MUCH, MUCH smaller scale and we usually don't do FDA studies, which saves a lot of time and money...and stress for me!); it does cost to develop and test drugs, and then bring them to market but get real, drug companies - at $3000 a pop, don't you think that the profits will go overboard *just a bit*?? It is ridiculous. And this is just for one drug - there are plenty out there with crazy costs. I read somewhere about the cost of medicine like this and what it actually costs the companies. It is sad that there are those people who cannot afford it. At least some of the companies are starting programs to help those who cannot afford medication but I don't know the extent to which they cover. It's just a catch 22 - they charge stupid amounts, (hopefully) insurance pays, our rates go up, they can be hesitant to pay...all the while the companies are getting fat pockets. But, we need them and that is what they know beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Oh, Shelly, you and your sister are in my thoughts and prayers in this difficult time... I hope she kicks cancer's *$^%!

When my MIL battled cancer, she had some crazy bills... the Procrit injection (to beef up red cell count) was something like $2,800 per injection (of course not covered by insurance)...

It's ridiculous. Medical care is highway robbery. :(

Hey Shelley, prayers and good vibes to you and your sister.

My husband had the same experience with Neupogen. He did a 5 day course to spike his WBC count before an autologous (self) bone marrow transplant. I scrambled for a week to find resources or direction to cover the enormous cost of this liquid gold. One of the most stressful weeks of my life. By week's end we knew we couldn't cover the cost, we would have to remove John from the treatment. Late that Friday afternoon we got a call from his oncologist that he had 'acquired' the drug for John during a golf game with the rep from, I believe it was, Amgen. To remember it now is a mix of emotion, that my husband's health options were held in the balance during a golf game makes me crazy but the gratitude I felt for the oncologist's thoughtfulness and the rep's generosity is what resonates all these years later. Cancer FREAKIN' SUCKS!!!!

Massive blessings to your sister, her family and you!

Take Care
Laurie
