Holy DOMS, Batman! Help!

Okay, looking for some advice here. I'm really not sure what to do.

I have been doing GS Legs once a week since April. EVERY time I do it, I have DOMS. Every single time. Sometimes they're slight and only last a day. Other weeks are worse. And if I skip a week like last week (oral surgery) I really pay for it and can hardly walk right for a couple of days.

When I was doing the Firm, I would get DOMS the first couple of times I did a new DVD and then my body would adjust and I'd be okay. Even with the upper body GS's, I only really get DOMS if I take off a week.

Does this seem right to you? While I'm doing it, I don't feel like I'm over exerting. I am very conscientious about my form and honestly, I feel on some of the exercises, I could go heavier. However, I'm reluctant to do so for obvious reasons. And I really don't want to go lighter because I love the results I'm getting.

Has anyone experienced this type of thing? Anyone have any advice? I just don't have a clue about what to do.

Thanks for your help!

Oh, and if it helps, here's my typical workout week:

Day 1: Cardio
Day 2: GS Back, Shoulders, Bis
Day 3: Cardio
Day 4: GS Legs
Day 5: Cardio (found that skipping this makes the DOMS worse)
Day 6: GS Chest, Triceps

Thanks again!

I really can't help you, but just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!! Every single time I do GS Legs...I have doms...it never fails!

Are you stretching properly before/during/after your workout?

My typical workout week looks very similar to yours, except I have recently started working legs twice a week with GREAT results. GS Legs earlier in the week, then something like B&G or L&G later in the week. At first I was sore all the time, but my body has responded amazingly to this!

Pinny...thanks for your comment. It's good to know I'm not alone!

CollinsMom...I do the warm up and stretches that Cathe does before and after the workout. Now that you brought it up, I wonder if I should spend additional time afterwards doing my own stretches?

"Hats Off" for doing Gym Legs so diligently!! I am so impressed. That leg workout never seems to let up!!! I have found stretching does help with doms and with how my knee joints and feet feel the next day. Even a little goes a long way for me.

one little idea

ok maybe two.

1. Definitely do some stretches. Also, consider before you go to sleep doing a segment of stretch max or yoga. That can help.

2. Epsom Salt bath. Warm not too hot. Sit in it for 15 to 20 minutes.

I hear you really. I don't have that workout what I have are hills that I hike three times a week. The first time I did the hardest hill I had doms for two weeks. Seriously, very sad. Could barely move. But I really didn't have much of a choice, once you are down the hill you have to come back up!

hill looks like this /

Epsom Salt bath

I will admit that I probably should take more time to stretch before and after workouts, especially the more intense ones, but I am also trying epsom salt baths for minor DOMS and general muscle aches and pains. I have had them (DOMS) for the past few weeks on and off (more on than off however). I read in one of the posts (by Kathryn I believe) to do this and found the salt in the pharmacy section yesterday. I could hardly wait for the bath when I got home... it felt very good and I felt a little relief shortly after, but still very sore today. not sure the baths offer an accumulative effect or what, but will continue to "test the water" :D

I also have a good deal of knee pain anyway (we have tile floors) and as the weather cools they get worse, so hope this works for that, too.

I have a question though... if stretching is so important after a workout, why are the stretching segments at the end of most DVD's so darn short?

my memory - what does DOMS stand for?

Thank you so much for asking that question - I have been wondering for quite some time & just haven't asked. I knew muscle soreness was in there somewhere.

PS - Everyone meet "Dottie" I replaced the other puppies picture. Dottie was the one I wished I could have kept , she was the last one to go this past Monday.

Where are you feeling it? I always experience DOMS after GSLegs but I don't do it nearly as often as you do. I've pinpointed my soreness as being caused by the elevated deadlifts.

Speaking of which, I really should do that workout today... ;) thanks!

I also get DOMS just about every time I do GSLegs which in my current rotation is once per week. And I cheat - I only usually do the standing work.

I just did GS Legs yesterday and today I can feel it every time I stand up from sitting or try to sit down. DH just laughs at me. My only remedy too is stretching. I agree that a Stretch Max segment before bed is heavenly.

Stretching and warming up for a little longer will probably help. Also, I've found that a little very lite cardio after a workout helps, too, like walking (I often take the dogs for a walk as a cooldown after a workout) or very easy jogging.

One thing I found that helped A LOT was taking BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) before and after a workout, and having a protein shake immediately after. I also really tuned up my nutrition and started eating to support my workouts. I used to get terrible muscle soreness when I was lifitng heavy and cutting calories a lot. I still get DOMS if I really push myself, but rarely anything that feels unmanageable.
