Has anyone out there ever ripped off their big toenail? Well, I did this morning! My first thoughts were how am I going to wear summer sandals and how in the world am I going to do cardio. I stupidly thought I could put on my shoes and step, because it really does not hurt. Boy, was I wrong! I have been hobbling around all morning in flip flops! I did ride my bike, but I am a Cathe step aerobics addict. If I can't exercise I will be like a junkie in detox! Any suggestions?

No suggestions, but I can tell you my sister started running in the last couple months and yesterday told me she is losing her big toenail! Weird.

OWWWWW! I said this out loud and my DH asked me if I was okay! LOL! (I tend to lean towards extreme "gracefulness!" If you get my meaning!)

That sounds so painful! I'm not sure I want to ask how you did that! I know that I had tripped on cracked pavement last summer and about a month later noticed my toenail was separating from the nail bed. There was no pain, but it took FOREVER to finish growing out and coming off! TMI?? Sorry!

Anyway, it sounds like you really hurt it! I'd give it just a couple of days and see if it the tenderness abates before trying to start stepping again!

I repeat - OWWWWW!

Ow! I'm so sorry! I don't have any suggestions, but wanted to tell you how awesome I think you are for trying to figure out a way to still get your workouts in.
I have an acquaintance whose DH did that at work and he is taking 3 weeks OFF work because he can't walk (he works at Lowe's as a manager, not construction or somewhere terribly physically demanding) Personally I think he is a bit of a wimp, but JMHO.
Anyway, my point is.... you rock for thinking about your workouts!!! And women are the stronger sex! LOL!

I haven't ripped off a toenail, but I lost a toenail (middle toe, right foot) TWICE after getting black toe from walking. It grew back both times (the first time, the blackened toe started loose, then seemed to become more fixed, so I thought I wouldn't lose it, but a week or so later, the toenail started peeling off, then I lost it completely).

You could try to put on a toe bandage (find them in a drugstore), with perhaps another bandage over it. The toe bandage is a foam 'tunnel' that fits around the toe. You'd probably still have to wear open-toed shoes, and any bending at the forefoot (like what you'd have to do to step) might still hurt.

The only cardio I can think of that might be doable would be spinning (get an attachement for your bike that allows you to turn it into a stationary bike as needed), swimming, maybe some modified kickboxing.

How did you rip off your toenail, may I ask?

I've never ripped off the big one, but I've ripped the little one on my left foot off a couple times. Hurt for a day or 2 and then was better. Took awhile to grow back, though. But since the big toe is bigger than the little toe, I imagine that hurt quite a bit. Morbid curiosity - how'd you manage to do that?

I was opening my back door to clean the glass and I guess my foot was in exactly the right place. It caught my toenail and pulled it right up. It really did not hurt. When I looked down I expected to see my toenail cracked, but it lifted all the way up to my cuticle. It is still attached and I hope it doesn't take too long to fall off, because I HAVE to exercise! That is my #1 stress reliever. I have to go to work tomorrow where I spend 7 of 8 hours on my feet. Not sure what type of shoe I will be in, probably flip flops! This is my last week of STS. I started in March and it has been a wonderful journey. I will have no problem with the upper body, but not sure about legs, esp. plyo! I will be riding my bike for cardio until I can get back to Cathe. I will miss her TERRIBLY!! If I could put a shoe on I would be steppin' because I really do not have any pain! Riding a bike is not nice in southeast Louisiana in mid-July, especially for an inside girl!!!
