Heavy Bag question -- hanging heavy bag?

llp

Cathlete
I've noticed that people are asking questions about the standing heavy bag, but, I think for space concerns, that won't fit in my workout/office space area. So, I thought perhaps a hanging bag in the garage would be a good idea(and my husband agrees to let me have some of his valuable garage space! ;)).

I would be hanging it off one of the main beams. Anyway, my question is: would the hanging bag give a good workout(or better workout)? I know nothing about this obviously...
Also, I'd just bring my laptop out there loaded with my DVD to follow the workout.

In the ad for Sports Authority today, they have a 100# Everlast hanging bag for $49.99(regularly $99.99), and I thought that was a good deal! It's a 2-day special:p.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

info on standing & hanging bags

Found some info on standing and hanging bags. Looks like the 100# bag will be too much for me, since I most likely am not a hard hitter!

Heavy bags vs. standing bags:
Heavy bags Standing Bags

Standing bags are ideal for those who will be both kicking and punching because the foam padding on a standing bag begins closer to the ground and provides more striking surface. Standing bags have wide rounded bases and can be easily rolled away; an excellent feature if space is at a premium.
Standing bags can be filled with either water or sand. In most cases water is preferred because of the wave-like motion and energy feedback that it provides. Sand-filled bags will have a thick, rock-like feel to them, but will be heavier than if filled with water. Water filled bags weigh roughly 270lbs. when filled.

Hanging bags are heavy bags that are suspended by chains and hooks to a wall mount or hanger. Hanging bags are extremely durable and provide a fluid workout than develops both cardiovascular stamina and strength. Hanging bags will make a great addition to a gym or home training studio. Hanging bags also provide some sway; which is good for improving coordination and footwork.

Weight:

The heavier a bag is the less it will sway, some sway is a good thing. Too much sway will mean the bag will be swinging back and forth making it difficult to hit. Too little sway and hitting the bag will feel like hitting a wall, and the bag will not absorb the impact which over time could cause damage to your muscles and bones.

A 5'8" 170 lb male who punches fairly hard should select a 60 or 70lb. bag. Harder hitters might want to choose a 100lb. bag while lighter hitters should look for something closer to 40lbs. If you are interested in working on speed and accuracy then you should choose a bag with a smaller striking surface such a 25lb. bag.

Which hanging bag is right for me?

Heavy bags from TKO are sought after by boxing schools and gyms alike for their professional quality and durability.

A leather bag will be extremely long lasting and feel comfortable when struck while wearing either bag gloves or boxing gloves Water core, or wave bags, are water-filled hanging bags that are adjustable in weight. They can be under-filled for a lighter weight and more sway. Bags with vinyl surfaces such as the TKO vinyl heavy bag offer great durability while maintaining the preferred softer feel of leather

If you are interested in using the bag outdoors, it is recommended that you look into the Indoor Outdoor Heavy Bag. This bag has a water proof exterior shell that protects it from the elements and makes it a perfect choice for anyone who lacks the indoor space to hang a heavy bag,

Hanging a heavy bag:

Unlike standing bags, hanging bags need additional hardware before they can be used. Heavy bags can be easily attached to wall mounts as well as rafter hangers and heavy bag stands.

Desktop Bags:

The Desktop Punching Bag is a fun way to relive stress at home or in the office. Designed to look and act like a real speed bag, the Desktop Bag will take what ever you can throw at it! the large suction-cup bottom will adhere to most smooth surfaces, while the steel spring will provide quick rebounds.

Wow, thanks for all that info. Boxing is new to me, and consideing buying a heavy bag, but no idea as to the details....Thanks for all that info! Autumn

I have a heavy bag/speedbag combo stand. I was wondering if this will work because in the mma clips it looks like the moves are around the bag. I can only use half of the bag?? Will this still work for me?

My heavy bag/speed bag stand is huge. Takes up lots of space but I really to like it. We moved to a smaller home though and now close to 1/4 of workout space is taken up. I love this though. The bottom attaches with a bungee cord so the sway is not that bad. Wanting to hear Cathe's thoughts though on how much I am supposed to move around the bag. It has worked fine for me so far.

Denise, I love the pink set. I keep looking at the pink Everlast gloves when I go to Academy Sports and Outdoors. I have a pair of red and green gloves that leave my thumb out to push the button on the remote LOL

question Diane Sue

Is your hanging bag a 40# bag? The reason I ask is because you are able to tether it to the bottom so it won't sway. Seems like I read the lighter ones had that capability.

I imagine I am a light hitter, so I'd need a light bag, but, wonder if it would sway too much, in which case maybe I need a 60-70# bag, so it won't sway so much.

I saw the stands at Sports Authority, and they're too big, even in our garage, but, I can hang one, and it wouldn't take up any floorspace!:D
Just can't figure out exactly what weight of a bag to get!

Linda, I've used both & I hate to say this, but I really do not like the standing bag. It moves around too much, which I find terribly distracting when I'm trying to get a decent w/o, & the quality doesn't come close to a hanging bag. The heavy bag is much more solid & IMO gives a tougher workout. Also they're less expensive if you don't need the stand, & it sounds like you don't.

Thanks Laura! Your opinion is really valuable because you have used both!
Why do you hate to say this? I am most likely going to get the hanging bag anyway since I can hang it in the garage from a sturdy eye hook or from the specific hanging hardware made for a bag, so that was good news to me:). Also, I think since many on this forum have never used any type of bag, your info will be valuable to them, too.

As far as pounds, would you suggest a 60# or 70# bag? 40# seems light, although I am sure I'm a light hitter(not a heavy hitter). I think the 40# might sway a lot, too.

thanks again for your advice ;).

Because it appears so many people like the standing bags.:eek::confused: I really hated mine though.

I found the 40 lb bag was too short--I don't think you'd be able to hang it in a position where you could both punch & kick with it. The Goldilocks bag was the 70 lbs. :)

There are also weighted attachments for the bottom that'll keep it from swaying. I haven't bought one of them yet--this fitness thing can be quite expensive. ;)

thanks Laura. I'll probably be buying a 70# bag from Sports Authority with a coupon in the near future. They have one on sale (Everlast) for $59.99, and I have a $10 coupon. I probably won't need the weight at the bottom for awhile. It will take a long while before I can make that bag sway....

Yeah, it gets expensive, but, I figure healthwise it's an investment ;).

Linda, I am not sure what weight my heavy bag is. I looked and it doesn't say on the bag. Mine is an everlast. It does sway quite a bit when I am kicking and hitting it. I couldn't imagine it without the bungee cord on the bottom. I am guessing it is a lighter one.
