Have you seen this site?

The company is trying to make a living at the expense of people.

Here is the real deal:

High-fructose corn syrup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Towards the end it tells you how unsafe this product is!

Oh yea...I wasn't saying it was safe. I'm just shocked they are promoting it like they are. I saw the commercial too!

I want to cut out HFCS...but how?? It's in EVERYTHING!

Jessica,

I knew you knew it was not safe. I was agreeing with you so much so that I had to add my 2 cents worth. Glad you brought it up on the forum.

Yes, it is in lots of processed foods. In order not to eat the stuff, eat more naturally. Fruits, vegies, grain fed animals, or vegetarian. Eat lots of grains such as barley, brown rice and whole wheat flour, nothing that has been processed so much it is white, unless it is that color naturally.

When you start eating more naturally, you feel so much better. Processed stuff is so addicting. Give it a month of non processed food, and you won't be addicted anymore. Your mind will still be in a war for sugars and other stuff because all around you people will be eating like you use to, but it is a war, and you can win this. It's not easy, I know, still struggling myself.

Take care and stay in good health,

Janie

I wouldn't say that I eat naturally but I have cut out alot of sugar & you are absolutely right!! I feel so much better w/o it! When I do eat more than I should I feel like crap!!!

People eat way to much convenience foods then wonder why they feel awful & have all these ailments.

I just fed my kids chicken nuggets, fruit, and milk! I read the ingredients in the chicket nuggest and wanted to hurl!! I think i am going to start making my own chicken strips with the strips, bread crumbs, and a little parmesan cheese. Atleast I know those ingredients! I was SHOCKED to see HFCS in my whole wheat bread!!

(and yes, I know chicken nuggets are not great....but we are in transition to healthy eating! Before, it would have been McDonalds chicken, fries, and coke!)

I AGREE! I know I feel better when I eat healthy. So why is it so darn hard to quit eating this stuff? I can break the addiction part of it, but sometimes I just want it. Comfort food!!!!!!!

It's hard, isn't it? I feel like it takes me twice as long to buy groceries because I have to read EVERY label so carefully. We stopped eating meat about a month ago (we being me, DH, and 3 kids 11,11, and 9). We stick to grains, beans, veggies and fruit most of the time. Some dairy and a fair amount of eggs too.

I've also learned which processed products (like bread and cereals) are better and just stick with them so that makes things easier at the store. But the transition is challenging for sure!

The other area we struggle with are snack bars - even the 'healthy' ones aren't always what they seem to be.

It is hard! HFCS seems to be in everything!! Ketchup, BBQ sauce, cereals, crackers, breads, bagels, etc. I buy some organic cereals for my kids (Kroger & Meijer thankfully carry them reasonalbly priced).

As for bars, have you tried the Clif Organic Z-bars??? They are really yummy & come in chocolate chip, chocolate brownie, & Peanut butter flavors. My girls LOVE them. I buy them in bulk at Sam's but you can get them at Wal*mart or Target also (in the health foods section, by the pharmacy).

And it takes me forever to shop if I'm buying something new. Otherwise I stick to the basics that I've found that have no HFCS or trans fats!

My two year olds go through boxes and boxes of these!! They LOVE every flavor, too! (They think they are cookies! :) )

Also,

Did you see who is sponsoring the website? The Corn Refiners Association... So sad...
Either the big farmers in the US are growing 80% (according to US Agricultural Assc.)of their crops to feed cows for people to eat and the other 15% are growing corn to make into these horrible products we all eat. Only a trickle amount of the crops grown in the US are actually for fruit and vegetable in their natural state for us to consume!!

Isn't there something in HFCS that messes with your ability to gauge when you are full? I also thought that there is something in it that resembles sugar, so your body is ready to process sugar and then there isn't any actual sugar in your body. That is when you start craving more and more, and you can't seem to get enough (Your body never got any actual sugar, so you keep searching for it, never satisfying the craving).

I have found lots of new products that don't have HFCS in them. My new favorite is the Thomas' English muffins. They are only 100 calories, lots of fiber, whole grain, etc, and no HFCS! This is my new bread!

You are all so right, though. MANY products have this stuff in it.

Anyone know if my information/assumptions are correct? There is so much out there that is misleading. I have a friend in the health professions field and she SWEARS that HFCS is completely natural and safe for all of us. Haven't "they" linked the obesity in the US with when "they" started adding HFCS to so many products??

Great topic! I am always fascinated!

Oh yeah, my girls think they're the best treat ever! They look forward to one after their swimming lessons! :D Oh, and the honey graham flavor that I can only find in singles at Kroger. (um, yeah I've tried 'em all! :p)

I was so glad when Thomas' took out the HFCS from their english muffins/ bagels! There was a really good article in the Abs Diet book on HFCS and Trans fats. Check your local library and see if you can get a copy! HTH!

Did you catch this:

"When the FDA banned stevia in 1991, the company replaced stevia in their drinks with HFCS."

I thought people still used Stevia....anyone know why it was banned?

And our taxes are helping subsidize the growing of corn (at least the hybridized, OMG corn that most of it is) as well as soy and wheat, while good veggies and fruits don't get the same subsidies. That's one reason HFCS is in almost every processed food : it's cheap!

Another thing I worry about is that overconsumption of any one food (soy, corn, wheat, etc.) can lead to food sensitivities (especially, IMO, if they are foods that have been 'tweaked' too much by science, like OMG foods and even some hybrids).

(If only 1/2 the land dedicated to corn and soy for animals were turned over to the production of hemp--which would first have to be made legal to grow...)

I know there was a while when you couldn't buy books on the use of stevia (like reciped books using stevia).

I don't think stevia has ever been approved by the FDA as a food, but could always be sold as a supplement.

I didn't know it was banned for a time (obviously not anymore, because it's in some things I buy).

I think the whole stevia thing (vs. other unproven artificial sweeteners that the FDA has approved) goes to show that the FDA is not really working for the consumer.
