Hardest rotation ever....

MAYNARDSMOM

Cathlete
I have found myself starting the hardest rotation this week ever, REST WEEK. I'm talking complete rest. :( "listening to my body" has not always been my strong point although I have been better about it than I used to be.
I have found myself with a lower back injury  Perhaps if I had "listened" to begin with (last week) I would be better off. I did go to my chiropractor & although he did say it was a bit out of line it seems to be more muscular than skeletal which is what I suspected.
So my question to those have found themselves in the situation of complete rest for a period of time, how did you get through it? In the past if a lower body injury sidelined me I could at least work the upper & core & vice versa, upper body gets me off track I still had the lower body. But with the back....well it wipes you out.
I am taking all the right measures, ibuprofen, heat, some ice etc. I am using this time to tighten up my eating which is clean but always room for improvement. I am making sure to eat foods that are naturally anti-inflammatory with every meal. I'm hoping to at least be able to walk to keep moving, although my dog whom I run with is going to be confused .
Thanks for any thoughtful suggestions.

I do a lot of meditations (just 15-20 min.) instead of the workouts and then I also take soothing baths with epsom salts. There is a yoga move that helps with my back, sounds odd because you don't really work on the back at all, just sit like thisVirasana | Jsthealth

Its not too hard. What happens for me is that my leg muscles are so tight from my cathe workouts (step) that they pull on my back, causing the pain. You might ask your chiropractor about that. Its very common. So, all it takes is about a minute in this pose, flow into child's pose, and then back again, the first time you might be tight, thats ok, the second time your body should release. I hope that helps.

Thanks so much. I will try it tonight. Totally forgot about the epsom salts. I have been doing Yoga (yogaMax & YogaRelax) My flexibility is great from it. :D

I found myself on complete-no-moving-whatsoever-rest when I broke my arm/shoulder in a cycling accident. I was to be basically completely immobile for 6 weeks so that my shoulder and arm would heal correctly since they could not cast it. This is what I did: read and ate salads...I actually ate so well I was able to drop a few pounds. This is what I remember from this time period.

good luck.

I'm currently forced to take 8 weeks off to recover from surgery. I've had to do this before and learned that the best thing to do (for me) is to make a list of the things I can do within my (very limiting) restrictions. In the beginning all I could do was lay down and watch TV or read, but now I'm focusing on doing things I can never find the time to do, like clean out the junk drawer and reorganize the linen closet. Oh, and I finally am going to get my tetanus shot booster...kept forgetting. It's not much, but it gives me a sense of accomplishment and keeps me from losing it.

Good luck...in my opinion one week is actually harder than multiple weeks, because you can taste it, whereas after a while you just give in to it.

Thanks Tracey & Trixoo. Funny you mentioned about doing things you don't have time for. I had thought of still keeping my early wake up time & using it to do cleaning I never have time for. The 1 week time frame is in my own head, wishful thinking that all will feel better by then. I signed up for a 5K Thanksgiving day & am thinking I may be backing out. We'll see.
I'm glad to see I'm not alone. Thanks for your advice & support.

Good luck Maynardsmom! One thing I forgot to mention is that you might be surprised how good you feel when you do get back to working out. Ive occasionally taken a week off when things have just been too hectic at work (hate that, but it sometimes literally comes down to giving up my workout, sleep or bathing...I feel that I'm making the best choice in a bad situation). Anyway, when I get back to it after that short time, I feel like I have springs in my feet. I've always wondered if that's my body's way of telling me that it wants a little break every now and then and that it's good for me. Hope you're back to it soon and that you get springs in your feet, too!

Yes I have thought this also. That is keeping me going, or not going guess ;) Funny this months issue of Oxygen has several mentions of rests & breaks so it helps. I am keeping in mind how great I will feel on Monday. My back is actually feeling better today :D so I will have to force the still taking it easy.

OK I thought I was flexible till I tried this  not so much. What exactly is this helping? My butt didn't make it to the floor :( I am going to do YogaRelax tomorrow. Good news is no ibuprofen today needed!
