gym and videos

Cathlete
just curious to know how many of you go to the gym for more strength and do cathe videos at home as well --- is there any method to this?

I used to do this in the past and then started up again recently. I also teach once a week & incorporate that into my workout program as well, I simply take my exercise program and fit in classes at the gym, mostly for the sake of variety and motivation. I had stopped going to the gym for a while, other than to teach, but recently started again and am very happy with my decision.

If you want to incorporate the gym, a great method is to plan for a week ahead. Where you want cardio, you can substitute a Cathe workout for the elliptical, treadmill, class, etc. You can also substitute weight workouts with the gym machines, your own routine or a class (most gyms have a total body weight class, similiar to power hour).

Personally, I really like the comraderie of a class & am very motivated (if there is a good instructor), so this works well for me. I think that using alternative methods are good to shock your system into responding as well.

Hi thinsgreat - I quit my gym membership in favor of building up my home equipment and working out at home using the DVDs. To be honest, I was scared that I would not be able to get as good of a workout. The opposite is true, though. I am improving so much more with my workouts at home. Not that there is anything wrong with a gym, and a gym can certainly offer you more equipment options. The problem for me was I didn't really enjoy my gym that much and was losing interest. All of that fancy equipment could not get me in the mood, and while I still went and worked out, it just wasn't cutting it. So, after years of gym membership, I took the plunge and have never looked back. If you can afford a trainer at a gym, or are disciplined enough to put together a program for yourself and stick to it, then I say go for a gym and save yourself the space at your house! I chose to invest in some equipment slowly, and of course the DVDs, and am getting into the best shape of my life, and love working out once again :)

Funny you should post this question because I was thinking the same thing. I've gotten hooked on the videos but I also like the interaction w/others. I like going to the gym when I want a change in my cardio routine. I have a TM at home and a few kickboxing CD's but sometimes my body wants something else so I try to listen to it.

I prefer doing legs at the gym because I dont care to do squats w/barbell on shoulders, I prefer the smith machine, it tends to take some of the pressure off my lower back.

One question I have is, in Cathe's leg w/o she does a leg press on the step, what exercise could you do at the gym that would be similar?

I do most of my strength at the gym. I work out at home to change things up sometimes. I also carry my Cathe DVD workouts as iPod video rips to the gym and mix it with work on the machines. There is no method to my approach. I just do as my mood dictates.

I use Slysofts AnyDVD and CloneDVDMobile to rip my videos to iPod format. CloneDVDmobile can convert a DVD to the formay of most video-capable mp3 players - iPod, Samsung, Creative Zen, Sandisk and more.
AnyDVD circumvents the copy protection that certain DVDs are created with. It is very simple to do. You start AnyDVD. You pop in the DVD in the PC. You start Clone DVD mobile. It has a very simple user interface. You can group chapters into individual output video files (of the format for the player you own), or make the whole workout on big output file. (I prefer the latter because then I can create my own premixes).

I posted this before but here is Cathe on my wrist, in an armband, on my iPod doing Core Max:

If I get STS, I will definitely do it at the gym - for both Meso 2 and Meso 3. I dont own heavy enough weights at home and dont plan to get them. I still havent decided between getting STS and waiting for STS-Gym.

I agree. I find I can handle higher weight at the gym that at home. I see no difference between the results I get from Cathe DVDs or gym workouts though. I think consistency and doing workouts that are challenging enough for your fitness level is the key rather than gym or home.

good grief, i am so out of touch---- what is that thing on your wrist--- i thought an ipod was a wee tiny sleek device that you put music on....how much do you think it will cost me to get a set up like yours.... all i have is a computer:)

what is the difference between sts and sts gym?

having cathe on your arm is like having a personal trainer at the gym, don't you think?

thanks

The ipod is wee depending on which model you buy. The two wee-est models are:

a. Shuffle - Wee-er than a mini-matcbook case. You can clip it on your tee or sports bra. But it has no screen so you cant navigate through your music or organize music in playlists. It can only play audio.

b. iPod Nano - That is what you see on my wrist. It is available in 4GB and 8GB models. It plays audio as well as video on its tiny bright screen. I have the 8 GB model. It is really thin and smaller than the average adult palm. It costs $179 currently at amazon for the 8 gb model and $139 for the 4gb model.

I use a Marware Wrist band. It is washable and made from neoprene and is adjustable to wear around your wrist or your arm.

STS is the DVD set that is currently on pre-sale. SNM announced that they will in future make an audio only mp3 workout STS-Gym based on the same principles as STS for people to use on iPods or other mp3 players. But no firm dates have been announced yet.

You bet!

thanks for all that info--- i will definitely check it out...if i have trouble, do you mind if i pm you?
thanks again.

I go to the gym to utilize the treadmill and elliptical. I do all of my strength training at home as I hate the weight machines. :p

Vrinda, that thing is the coolest! I don't want to know how much it costs though..............

I do all my weight training at the gym. There are certain exercises I would never be able to do at home without the pricey, space hogging equipment, & I don't think I'd ever be able to lift as heavy as I do just with home exercise. Legs are a perfect example--I squat & lunge pretty heavy, but I can't imagine trying to lift that kind of weight up off the floor & over my shoulders to do it at home. Chest is another good example--without a bench press, a pec deck & cables I wouldn't have been able to build the muscle I now have.

I do most of my cardio & one of my 2 core workouts at home. The breakdown comes out to about 50/50.

P.S. I do leg presses at the gym, on a leg press machine. :p

I'd love to hear from you by PM. :)

I'm alot like Laura Max, where most of the time I do my cardio at home and then lift at the gym.

I like to lift heavy for chest, back, and legs and the equipment at the gym allows me to do that.

I will lift at home for shoulders, tris and bis if getting to the gym that day doesn't look feasible.

I love working out at home, but I also work out of my house for my job so going to the gym is often my only contact with other people some weeks... I like it for the social interaction too!

Take care, Lynn M.
