Gwyneth Paltrow's trainer

I just think it is sad how many people will now work out in rooms that are 80+ degrees lifting 3lb weights and never losing anything more than water weight. Why are people so afraid to work hard for what they want, that is when it will actually mean something and not be a fad.

IF this trainer has gone through any kind of certification program, then she has to know that what she is telling people to do is WRONG.

OK, off my soap box.

I was wondering when all of you would pounce on that

I saw that episode of Oprah. And I am one of those women who tends to bulk up due to hormones (ugh.) but even so, 3 # is a little ridiculous, I mean what am I supposed to do when I need to carry a backpack with 4 books, two binders, three notebooks, a trumpet and a French Horn? Like I did in 7th grade? What then?

Also, who wants to look like Gwyneth? She is a sweet girl (or seems like it) and personable. But, no muscle definition. I bet that Apple out lifts her.

And why was Oprah making it seem like this is some sort of goal weight or look? Skinny is not really that hot. Trim. Muscular. Thats h o t. I think Oprah aught to have Cathe on to talk about weight lifting for women.

I know someone who lifts 3# weights and eats about 800 calories a day and looks great-she's also not quite two years old;)

Eventually, though I think we may have to bump the calories and up the weights, no?

A full gallon of milk weighs 8 bs. I had neck surgery and my limit was 5lbs. Then the nurse told me that stat just to give me an idea. I came home and could not pick up my then 3 year old for 2 mos.

Madonna's gyrating with the speaker/guitar looked like my friends pervy little dog doing something with one of his stuffed toys. . . .

Americans love gimmicks. Give 'em quick and easy anyday!!

My SIL asked me what I did to get in shape and I told her. She was like uhhhh, I don't want to work that hard  Well, I guess you'll remain overweight then too :(

Great line! LOL

Our culture is way too good at promoting quick fixes. Whatever happened to "anything worth having, is worth waiting for?" or sweating for in this case. What's sad is that someone putting this together and selling the idea to people is probably going to be laughing all the way to the bank...at least for awhile.

I agree this person is an idiot and Gwyn is naive for listening to her - have you ever really looked at Gwyn's body though? She's got the waif look - no breasts, scrawny arms. A real trainer knows that as a woman ages, she needs weight training not just to look healthy but to BE healthy - to help with bones, increase muscle mass, etc.etc....

Thank you ladies!!!

Every since I saw this on Oprah, I have been wanting to post abut it in OD! I finally got to the computer today and saw this hilarious thread!

I was so outraged at the ignorance of this trainer that I threw something at the television! And she gets paid the big bucks to do this? She's an idiot!

And, you all are so right: who wants to look like Gwenyth? No thanks! I'll pass on the weak look!

It was such poor advice from a supposed "professional" that those of us who know better will spend years trying to correct this misinformation. But, you know, if it was heard on Oprah, it must be true!!! Maybe all this time I've been doing the wrong thing lifting heavier weights and adding lean muscle to my frame! I mean, I can barely fit through the door frame with all this unsightly muscle I've got!!

And one more thing. Hasn't that trainer ever heard of testosterone? And that women lack sufficient amounts to build bulky muscle? Idiot!

VF had a link to the trainer's site up. On it, there is a photo gallery of her, in what look like almost soft-core-porn photos. (And the woman looks like she has barely any muscle tone to speak of, not even enough to be called 'toned'.)

How true! I am a lurker over at VF :)rolleyes:) and followed the link. My DH even asked what site I was on (and could he have the address ).

I have just been noticing lately that I am no longer looking skinny, but a little bit bulkier, and am enjoying it. I am getting stronger by the day, finding things my body can do that I had no idea it was possible to do (can finally do the pike on a ball!), am lifting heavier than ever, and look in the mirror and really like what I am seeing. It makes me feel more powerful and in control than when I was 118 lbs at 5'9"! I love seeing my muscles grow. I can't imagine surviving on 800 calories a day and lifting no heavier than 3lbs. My kitten weighs more than that, and he is like lifting air. Anyway, I got off mh original topic! Today, I was looking at pics from the Emmy's. Holly Hunter was in the paper. I didn't even recognize her. She is bone thin. Why do people think this looks good? I say, huge props to the actresses who are healthy and proud of it. I know that aneroxia is a very nasty illness (my mom nearly died from it), but these actresses don't have aneroxia - sounds like idiotic trainers and weird trends that they follow that lead them down the path to starvation, muscle deterioration, and poor health. Yuck.

Her name is Tracy Anderson. Here's her web site. http://www.tracyandersonmethod.com/

ITA, Kathryn. The gallery photos look more like soft-core-porn than fitness shots.

She's got the heroin-chic physique of an Olsen twin...and apparently a mug shot!

I'll keep working on my single-rep-max deadlifts...

It looked to me like she (the trainer) uses a lot of band work, which we all know can be very effective. I've also read that she uses Pilates-type equipment in a lot of her work with clients, so I think it's just a different approach to strength training than what most of us here are accustomed to. Different strokes for different folks. :)

Wow I just watched that video. I am so incredibly FURIOUS that Tracey makes such false remarks such as "less weight= less bulk". HOW DARE SHE?!?!?!? She obviously has no idea what she's talking about.

"No woman should ever lift more than three pound weights"?!?!?! Is she out of her mind?!?!? I have ZERO--and I mean ZERO respect for her as a trainer and I sincerely hope no woman listens to her advice. The sad part is that many of the women who watch Oprah religiously and saw that video are now going to follow Tracey's ridiculous workout advice and toss their heavy weights. That woman should be stripped of any and all certifications she has and forced to go take a few of Cathe's classes.

She's a joke.
