Green Tea vs. Diet Coke

Lee Anne

Cathlete
I am a total addict of Diet Coke. I keep one with me constantly. I am going to try to stop drinking them and start drinking green tea. Does anyone know if green tea have as much caffeine as diet coke? I don't think I can do without caffeine.:p Also, I've read that green tea has lots of antioxidants in it. Are there any other benefits to drinking it?

TIA

Lee Anne

SOunds like you're making a great switch! Green tea is SOO much healthier than diet Coke (in which the only "natural"ingredient is the water!)

Green tea has caffeine, but much less than diet coke.

Aside from beneficial antioxidants, green tea may also help you burn more fat.

White tea has even more antioxidants than green. Red tea (Rooibos--not really from the tea plant) does also, though not as much as white tea, which seems to be the winner in the antioxidant department. I love INKO'S "hint o'mint" white tea. Very lightly flavored with ginger (I don't even taste the ginger) and spearmint, and unsweetened).

I too am a Diet Coke fiend. I chain-drink these all day long. I do like green tea but can you drink it on ice & have the same benefits? What about the white tea you're talking about? Can that be on ice too?

Really I just love the carbonation. I love that burn at the back of my throat first thing in the morning.

Thanks, Kathryn! I had some for lunch and it didn't taste that bad, but it doesn't smell very good, so I'll have to get past that. I have never heard of white tea or red tea. Do you get it at health food stores?

Oh Marla! I am the exact same way. That's the first thing I do when I get up in the morning. I drink at least a 2 liter bottle a day. The main reason I want to stop drinking cokes is because I've read it can mess your memory up when you get older. Dementia runs in my family. My grandmother and her sister didn't know they were in the world by the time they died, so I sure don't need to speed the process up. Plus, my son says a prayer each night that I'll quit drinking them. :)

I do love that burn. :)

How many glasses do you think you drink a day? Can you drink too much of it? Thanks for the website. :)

Lee Anne

Oh yes, that burn. LOVE it, too. I have significantly cut back on how many I drink... but I've not completely kicked it. Hmmm... (she wonders) am I even TRYING to completely kick it? }(

Green tea is really good for you. It's actually great for weight loss because I think it increases metabolism and helps you release water stored by salt and caffeine. You can get decaffeinated green tea, as well. But Do NOT sweeten it with aspartame (Nutrasweet and Equal are aspartame), though. I'll start another thread to discuss why not...that way, everyone can benefit from the info.

My father uesd to teach biology/pre-med at a Philadelphia suburb college. His seniors had to do a massive research project. One senior did her project on the effects of diet soda. The results were unbelievably frightening. That stuff is SO bad for you. (I do drink one diet soda a day, though, 'cause I like a cold caffeine fix in the afternoon). I can't remember all the details of the effects (see, memory loss is definitely one of them!). I'll check in with my dad this weekend and report back.

For those of you who like the fizz, but not necessarily the caffeine, would flavored seltzer water be a good substitute?

Lee Anne,

I am a Diet Pepsi addict switching to tea. I used to drink one... sometimes 2... 44 oz fountain sodas a day. I've been cutting back, and I am now down to one or two a week. I had a Diet Pepsi last night and poured most of it out... just doesn't taste the same. I've been drinking different teas... I add sweetener though (whey low)... probably why the diet soda tasted terrible.

Oh Shelbygirl (I read the post)... my kids and I are in BIG trouble... I drank diet pepsi with both of them.

Best of luck to Lee Anne.

Sure! Iced green/white tea is great.

If you drink too much (as with any beverage), you'd be in the bathroom all day, so it's kind of self-limiting!

I usually drink one or two 16-ounce bottles of the unsweetened white tea a day. On rare occasions, three.

I get mine at a local health food store (though I know INKO's has a web site). I buy it by the case so it costs less. (It's cheaper to buy the tea bags, but I'm lazy!)

I used to be a Pepsi addict in the mid-seventies. Then I gave it up (though I had cravings for it). Several months later, I tried some, and it tasted SO AWFUL! Fake, and chemically. YUK!

You definitely can train your sense of taste: for better (green tea!) or for worse (sodas).

Another alternative for cola beverages is the cola-flavored "Emergen-"C." It doesn't have the phosphorus (bad for bones) that cola beverages do, and contains vitamins and minerals.

Kathryn,

You were one of my inspirations for giving it up... seriously... you posted this before and I would think of it everytime I'd cosider a soda. I haven't completely given it up, but I will. My cravings are gone... I do it out of habit now.

I LOVE the Emergen-C... Super Orange is my favorite. I have to thank this forum for discovering it... read about it here.

Wow, thanks for that website! I have been drinking about 16 oz of green tea everyday, usually. Now I know how good it really is for me. I just used to to get over coffee.

This post is right up my alley!

Today I started to cut back on my diet coke conumption. I had 2 cups of green tea and 2 glasses of diet coke. That is great for me because usually I consume about a 2 liter a day. My memory stinks and I am only 32! It's not good for your teeth or your bones. I think I can do it.

I am glad to know that I am not the only diet coke addict out there and people are trying to quit like me.

Lori:)
