Give me some practical clean eating tips, please!

When I made steel cut oats in the crock pot, they turned out really mushy and strange. I wonder what I did wrong.

Michele, I ordered that book on Amazon today.
Oh good! It's the handiest cookbook I own and I probably have 200 cookbooks. ;)

Carrie, I've gotten similar results when cooking oats in the crock pot. I don't think you did anything wrong -- I wonder if it makes a difference which brand of crock pot you have.

That could be Michele. I have a large, less expensive one. I was thinking it might work better in one of the smaller crock pots? Also, how long do you cook them for? "Overnight" could be 8-10 hours depending on when I put them on.

Mine is older, too. I only tried them in the crock pot twice and the results were so disappointing that I went back to making them on the stove top. Also, the oats made a terrible mess and I had to soak the crock pot in hot soapy water to get it clean.

Count me in as yet another person who got blah results when cooking my steel cut oats in a crock pot! They turned out all crusty and dry... Probably because I cooked it for 9-10 hours :p. I found a crock pot recipe that essentially has you making a water bath in your crock pot: the oats and water (or milk, which I prefer) are in an oven-safe bowl, and you put water in your crock pot to surround the bowl. This creates a steaming effect and keeps the oatmeal from getting all hard and crusty, in theory. I want to try this, only I don't have an oven safe bowl. I'll have to go looking for one (which hopefully will fit my crock pot).

I haven't read all the posts yet, but I find the easiest way to make SC oats is the overnight method. I bring about 2 1/2 cups of water to a boil, throw in a cup of SC oats, stir it up, turn the heat off, put a lid on and leave it sitting. When I get up in the morning, it's done and I just scoop some into a bowl and warm it up in the microwave.

As far as clean eats, I say Snickers and a Coke. OH COME ON, I had to. For old time's sake;)

I don't know why it wouldn't. You could probably sit the pot in the fridge and get the same results, if you're worried about leaving the milk out all night.

Well, they are both wheat/gluten free so that has to count for something, right?? Anyone??

Cool, that's what I was worried about (leaving it out overnight with milk in it). I'm going to try this!! Thanks!

Thanks for the overnight tip, Shelley. I'm think I'm going to try that tonight. Sounds like it might make my morning easier.
