Getting new weights for STS

Have any of you who have compelted 1RMs and printed your workout cards found that you need to buy new dumbell weights/increments/plates, etc.? I currently have sets of 5, 8, 10, 12, 15, and 20 dumbells, which get me through all of my current Cathe workouts. However, I'm wondering if I'm going to need a set of 25, 30, etc. or even plate magnets to create odd size dumbells (i.e. 17lbs, etc.) Just wondering what you've all found thus far when you get the results....

I'm going to have to invest in some more poundage too. :) 20#s are still a bit of a struggle for me, but at the rate I'm going, it won't be long before I need to bump things up.

Thanks to fellow Catheites, I found pace weights. I haven't invested in them yet, but I'm currently reading up and trying to decide if I should buy them or just go to 25#s.

I'm also on the lookout for a 20lb adjustable vest from Cathe. Via the Search function, I found a thread where there was a mention of her creating one. *fingers crossed*

i am going to wait til the third month to see if i can really handle the 1rm.i think thats when heavy weights are used.since i am doing the 6 month rotation i should be ready to pump it up.

I will definitely need more weights. I just ordered a 20 lb vest, and I think I need to invest in a bigger barbell as my old Firm barbell is already loaded to 45# and I don't know if it can take any more! My husband's barbell is one of those super-long ones that I'm sure I'd end up knocking stuff over with.

I was very surprised at how much heavier I should be lifting. Notice I did not say "pleasantly surprised" ...

I asked Cathe a while ago what was the highest weight she had used in STS, and she said it was 50lbs - I guess that answers all questions :)
I currently have dumbbells up to 40 lbs. I get a little nervous even imagining myself lifting 50 lbs with one hand..... But who knows, anything is possible!

I don't know how I would even get a set of 50# dumbbells home from the store. And God knows if I ordered them by mail my poor mailman would quit.

Geez - what do you use a 50# dumbbell for? One arm rows is all I can even conceive of at that weight.

Does anyone know what weight Cathe uses for squats in STS? I think she uses 40-5# in several of her other workouts. I know she's said she wasn't going to announce the weight she uses in STS, but sometimes you can tell from looking ...

For mesocycle one I also have funny DB weights like 14, 17, 17.5, etc.
I plan to use my paceweights and 2# Cathe weighted gloves.

For the leg work I plan to use weighted vest (10 & 20#) plus BB.

I haven't printed out my meso II and III, so I can't even imagine the funny weights with the heavier workouts.

I plan to buy more light, metal (5#) plates because I have 2 empty DB handles.

I already have such a large selection of weights that I don't plan on buying anything right now. I had to buy a couple of sets of DBs last year after using the 4DS which helped me break through a plateau. I also bought 2 sets of 1 1/4 lb plate mates and 2 sets of 2 1/2 lb plate mates. Now, I can increase my DBs by 2 ½ lbs and 5 lbs and I have a 40 lb weight vest so I think I’m good.

But you never know ;),

Which vest do you have? I just ordered X2 (I think that's the brand) w/20#. I'm thinking I should have found a 40#. I'm assuming you can't put an extra 20# in the one I got or it would have advertised itself as going up to 40#.

Also, who has a barbell that holds 100# but is still fairly short. I love my old Firm barbell's length, but I don't know how much weight it can hold.

I bought a 13# threaded 6' barbell from Sports Chalet. I don't know the maximum load but assume it is easily 100#. It takes 40 with NO problem and has lots of thread left for more weight. It is the one they offer as part of a larger set. They had an additional bar leftover in the back for some reason, and sold it to me separately.

I need to buy a match for my 35 pound DB, and then I'll wait to see what else I need after I input the 1RM tests. What I definitely need is a way to add small increments, I have the rubber DBs, so plate mates will not work. I bought ankle/wrist weights, but they are giant, not really good for wrists. So I am going to buy some wrist weights for the odd number weights like 17. I do have the 1 pound weighted gloves, but I find they hurt my fingers when I make a fist. I think I saw reebok has some wrist weights at varying weights, I'll have to google that again.

I have 12 pairs of DBs already...all I need is STS ha! I like the idea of the pace weights though. Really nice.

My BB weight set is in total 55lbs...will I need more than that for STS? Good thread. This making me looking into a 100lbs BB weight set.

Thanks!

I have the Ironwear (short) vest and I really like it. Also, I have an Olympic curl bar but I've never put 100 lbs on it. It does hold the same plates as my Olympic straight bar. I also have the Walmart BB that I've used ~88-90 lbs with and have'nt had a problem. At least I think it is from Walmart (I'd have to check, I've owned a few).

I hope you like your vest :),

Petramom, thats exactly what she said she used it for - 1 arm row. As for the mailman, I ordered mine from ironcompany.com and the shipping was free (even though the DB were so expensive, I cannot imagine it was really free) and UPS delivered them, so yeah, its possible :)

If anyone is interested Costco (warehouse) has some adjustable dumbbells that go up to 50# each for $297 if anyone is interested. They have another set online that goes to 100 for more $. I'm considering buying the lighter set with my rewards check if they still have the set in February when I get it... But not sure what I'd do with all my existing dumbbells! I have 3s, 5s, 8s, 10s, 12s, 15s, and 20s. But for the cost of getting 25s up, I'm sure that the $297 is cheaper!

Thanks!

I ended up buying 2 of those 55 pound sets, it's also nice to have 2 barbells set up for quicker transitions. I definitely needed more weight than the 55 for leg work and chest presses as well.

I have an extra BB pole so maybe I can work with that. Good idea. Not sure why I didn't think of it ha! Mabye I was thinking to hard.
