gas help

Hello everyone. My SO's brother has always had a problem with gas. I want to help the poor guy out and was wondering if anybody here had any suggestions for him. He is not a clean eater, tries to workout when he can. The only thing I can think of is maybe a digestive enzyme? He takes gas-x. I was just wondering if there was anything else he could do. TIA.

I just read that passing gas several times a day is normal. Which of course made DH happy :p and he had to point out to me that he is normal . So unless your SO brother's gas is excessive .....

Fennel tea or chewing fennel seeds can help. Other than that I would think that he needs to find out what causes the excessive gas and address it with dietary and lifestyle changes. Unfortunately I don't think there is any magic pill. I wish there was because I would sneak it in DH's food.

Hi Carola. Yes it is very excessive. I asked him if it was a certain food and he said it's everything. I will mention the fennel tea and seeds, thanks.

I suggest carrying matches. They useful for both purposes covering up or entertaining friends (flame retardant pants highly recommended). He could also blame others, preferably in a loud voice or simply take pride in his ahem...verbosity.

ROTFLMAO!!! I knew we could count on you, Beavs! :D:D

This subject is a constant topic in our house. I found that protein bars and artificial sweeteners were feeding my gas. So I only consume them when I want to have game! :)

I used to be terribly TERRIBLY gassy. It would be pretty much non stop all day. I used to blow my poor boyfriend out of the room. I recently started eating glutten free cereal, bread, pasta etc and it's made a huge difference. I must be, to some degree, allergic to gluten. He might give this a try.

Lol, he does take pride in it.

As my mom must told me today, there is nothing that won't give me gas!! I am never without enteric coated peppermint pills - mine have fennel and ginger in them too. They really help. Too bad they don't turn the smell into peppermint though...;) Peppermint tea helps too. I can literally be enjoying my nice flat tummy with my abs proudly showing and within minutes, go to bloated to the point of looking pregnant if I eat the wrong thing. I hate it. If he chews sugarfree gum, he must stop that immediately. Any gum can do it but especially the sugar free. Carbonated drinks too. Plus all sorts of weird things that one may not expect, like carrots.

That could be something that he could talk to his doctor about. I really could be an allergy to food. It could even be mixing too much food together or they type of food that he eats. I would suggest he try cleaning up his eating.

Hope he figures what the problem is for the sake of those around - LOL!!

Other things that can contribute to gas that haven't been mentioned:
Does he chew gum?
Eat with his mouth open?
Gulp drinks?
Drink through a straw?
Any of these can add air to the digestive tract and increase gas.

Something like BeanO taken with the first few mouthfuls of beans or cabbage or any gas-increasing foods can help.

Food intolerances can cause gas.
You can do an at-home test for food intolerances by following an elimination diet for a few days (sticking with easily digested foods like rice), then gradually adding in possible suspects. A web search on 'elimination diet' or "food intolerance elimination diet' will probably give you some info.

HTH!
