fruit anyone??

I have been really trying to clean up my eating. I went from 2 sandwiches before bed to nothing but water and looking longingly at the fridge while drinking it. LOL :) I have been going to the produce markets every week and buying a lot of fruits and veggies. I am eating an apple, pear and orange every day. Is that too much fruit?

Breakfast is normally oatmeal w/ the pear, lunch is a salad or a meat sandwich w/ the orange and chips and dinner is normally sauteed veggies w/ the apple.

We kind of eat dinner late, so I don't like to eat too heavy. I have cut my soda down to diet only and instead of a 64 oz'r every day I drink a 32 oz'r. I do have a lot of family members that drink only tea. I can drink it, but not every time I go for something to drink. I have been drinking a lot of water, it's hard for me, but doable.

Anyways, any 3 piece a day fruit eaters like me?

Fruit and Clean Eating

Heather:

My name is Heather. I live in high carb heaven! :7 I love fresh fruit. I eat at least 3 servings a day and more than that in the summer. The more fruit I eat, the more weight I lose. I do well with a higher carb style of eating in general (including a lot of whole grains). I have discovered through years of experimenting that eating too much protein (especially animal protein) leads to weight gain and depression. Carbohydrates account for 60 to 70 percent of my calories, and I eat fruits and veggies with every meal and snack. Most people here focus on and do better with more protein, so I realize that my body is unusual. I eat bananas and watermelon and other really sweet fruits too, but I am not carb sensitive at all. Protein is what my body has a hard time digesting, so I eat small portions of protein every few hours with whole grains, fruits, and/or veggies. A plant-based way of eating is best for me too. I eat small amounts of clean animal protein every other day on circuit training days, but I avoid it otherwise and return to plant-based eating exclusively from time to time. I honestly believe that everyone is unique. You will need to experiment and discover what works for you. It is nice to meet another Heather! :)

I would add a little protein to your breakfast. I love to add a tablespoon of natural peanut butter to my oatmeal. Yummy! A boiled egg is a nice addition to breakfast too. You might want to eat a few ounces of protein like some grilled chicken with your veggies for dinner too. If you are wanting to clean up your eating even more, I would drop the chips and diet drinks before eating less fruit. Eating 5 times a day works better for me. Just some suggestions that you can take or leave. ;) Drink plenty of water. Add a slice of lemon or lime if you like.

By the way, I have gone from 260 pounds to 185 pounds eating this way (from a size 28 to a size 14).

Blessings,
Heather B.

RE: Fruit and Clean Eating

Hi Heather,

DH and I eat a ton of fruit, mostly apples, bananas and blueberries (frozen). When summer arrives we'll be eating watermelon regularly too. I have to go to the store twice a week just for fruit!!

i don't think 3 pieces of fruit it to much but that is just my opinion. i eat apples, oranges, and bananas mostly. when i can get a good deal on others stuff like canteloupe, watermelon, strawberries, mangos, etc i get them. kiwi is really good too, packed with vitamins in on little kiwi, its just a pain to get the skin off.

Heather...WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN??????? Miss you!!!!

Are you still running up and down the bleachers at the track?

I love fruit. I usually apple with peanut butter (crunchy kind so taste like candy apple..ummm) I eat red grapes and watermelon too. I have a banana in my protein shake. When I eat grapes, I eat them with cheese. I like to eat my fruit with some form of protein.

belovedHeather- The soda and chips were really hard to cut down in the beginning. I knew from past experience that if I went cold turkey then I wouldn't last too long. I have to go at it gradually. I have gone from half the bag to just a small handful. I notice that when the weather gets warmer it is easier for me to drink water. You mentioned "plant based" in your eating. What exactly is that? I have no idea what type of eating plan is better for me (ie: how many carbs, etc.). For you to have a 75# weight loss, then you are definitely on the right track. A lot of times I look at myself and think "Forget it, there is too much to lose", or else I just plain get lazy. Although, a couple months ago I weighed 239.9 and now I weigh 221. All I have changed is my eating and I have also gotten a treadmill and recumbant (sp?) bike in January.

sparrow- I have probably eaten a handful of blueberries in my entire life. They do have those at the produce market though. Maybe I will try them.:9

ldy solana- You have to take the skin off the kiwi?;-) Just kidding! There is something that grosses me out about the feel of the skin, that is why I don't eat them. When I take my daughter Sarah to the store w/ me, she always gets one, and eats it too! (not the skin) LOL

jafitmama- I have heard of that book but haven't checked it out from the library. I am going there tomorrow. I will see of they have it.

toasty- I haven't been on the track for a while. Like I said above, I got a treadmill and a recumbant bike in January. I would rather be on the treadmill than on the bike. My problem is that yes, I am exercising, but obviously I was consuming WAY too many calories AND eating late at night, and not seeing any results. I can still do 4 sets of 50 alternating lunges in a row, w/ a 2 minute break in between. I do feel them, trust me! I like to do them as soon as I step off the treadmill. I know I have a lot of muscle, it is just spread over w/ too much fat. When school lets out, I plan to start going to the track again. I love doing the bleachers!

Three pieces of fruit a day is not too much, espcially if you stick to low glycemic fruits (like apples, pears, berries).

yes,
in the summer time i am known for eating about 5 to 6 fruits everyday.
i love fruits.
i love kiwi and i eat the skin too. i read on self magazine that it is okay to eat the skin. i can not remember the reason that was given.
anyway, enjoy your fruits.

RE: Fruit and Clean Eating

I always eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, and I have always said that nobody get fat from eating a banana. If I keep up with good eating and daily cardio, I do lose weight. I have lose about ten pounds so far, and I would like to lose about eight more.

three piecies of fruit too much???? Not at all, actually you should have more! I think the recommended amount is 5-7 servings of fruits/vegetables a day, and I think of fruits as "free foods"--you can never eat too much--but that is very much a lay-person's opinion!

Encouragement for You

Heather:

Please be encouraged and know that you are doing a great job. One pound gone is worth celebrating. Never, never give up no matter how far from your goal weight you still are. Every step you take in the right direction moves you that much closer to your goal.

I am a big believer in making gentle and gradual changes in eating. I was a compulsive binge eater for years. During my darkest hour, I was drinking 18 to 24 cans of Dr. Pepper a day and chewing 100 pieces of gum a day. I was totally addicted to sugar. It was not unusual for me to consume 20,000 to 30,000 calories in a 24-hour period, and I literally ate until I passed out on several occasions. I switched to sweet tea first (to give up the carbonation) then switched to lemonade (to break free from the caffeine) then switched to fruit juice (for more natural sugars) then switched to water. Baby steps count. It has taken me 2 years and 9 months to drop 75 pounds because I am not willing to cut my calories too low and risk triggering a binge. I am still 55 pounds above my goal weight, but I have walked in victory over binge eating for 2 years and 9 months. Glory!

Plant-based eating is my way of saying that plant foods (whole grains, fruits, and veggies) form the basis of my menus. I only eat animal protein every other day on circuit training days. Even then my portions are very small. Someone on a protein-based diet might eat a big chicken breast as a main course. I choose a large salad with a few ounces of grilled chicken as an accent. I do not consider myself a vegetarian because I still eat organic chicken, dairy products, and eggs in moderation. I have gone for weeks at a time with no animal protein. If you want to determine what works for you, experiment and keep a journal. Record how different foods affect your weight and your emotions. Do you feel sleepy or energized after eating carbohydrates? Do starchy foods cause you to retain water? Do certain foods trigger the desire to eat more and more? Does protein cause you to feel sluggish or sit in your stomach like a brick? These are just a few questions you can ask yourself after each meal.

I eat clean 6 days a week and enjoy a treat one day at week. Today I ate some organic white corn tortilla chips with Hell on the Red mild party dip and an Organic Almond Smacker. Yummy! When you are ready to reduce your chips, try saving them for a weekly treat.

Hang in there, and keep pressing on. You are on the right path.

Blessings,
Heather B.

I love to eat fruit. It is a lot better than going and grabbing a bag of pop tarts or a handful of oreos. I also have gotten out of the habit of eating because I was bored. I have been buying a lot of different veggies and sauteeing them in smart balance butter. They are sooo good. My SIL introduced me to this oil called Enova (link follows). http://www.enovaoil.com/

I have cooked w/ it in cakes. I think it makes it seem lighter for some reason. The litle bottle they show was 4.68 at walmart. When I am done using that I am going to try the smart balance oil. Has anyone tried it yet?

I love fruit!!! Not only is it good tasting but it has been shown in numerous studies to offer protection against certain cancers as well as having anti-aging effects (esp blueberries!!). I try to have at least 4 pieces a day!

Robin :)

anti aging effects.....yep I need halp there. I don't think I would be getting hit so hard by my body in the age department if I had kept up on taking care of myself. All I can do is work on now and not dwell on the years I can't get back. I did buy blueberries today and me and my daughter had them in yogurt. They were pretty good. I will add them to my weekly produce market visits.:9
