Freaking Out!

Here's something funny...DH and I have a high-deductible health plan. Because we're healthy people we're no where near meeting the deductible, but I called them anyway to see if they'd cover the cost of the shots (which could be upward of $5000) since it's preventive. But the insurance told me "we don't consider this preventive." REALLY?! LOL, insurance, gotta love 'em. :)

You have got to be kidding me!!

I hope this isn't a dumb question. Are you getting rabies vaccines similar to what they give dogs?
I was wondering why that vaccine wouldn't be required for everyone dogs-humans?
How long is the vaccine good for?

I actually don't know but I don't think so? The nurse (who was fabulous!) told us that the first shot is vaccine from someone who actually had rabies and the 4 in the behind is some substance that supercharges your own immune system. So I guess it would have to be based on species, dog/human/cat. But I don't know.

As for the requirement for getting the shot, my guess is because it's so expensive, which I think, in turn, is because rabies is actually so rare in humans these days that there is not a lot of source for the vaccine. AFAIK the vaccine is only good for this round. If I turn out to be the most unlikely human on the planet and come into contact with yet another rabid animal I think I will have to do this all again!

I actually had the preexposure rabies vaccine years ago when I was working with wildlife. I would think the series you are getting works similarly and if you were ever exposed again you could get a titer and if the levels in your body were still good you'd just need a booster. I know if I got bit, that's what I could do.

So will they cover the balance after your deductible? Reading this I'm thinking no. How ridiculous! We pay and pay and pay into our insurance and then they can't even cover us for things like this? Unbelievable!

Not all bats live in colonies, some are solitary. They should be able to tell you what kind of bat it was, so you'll know how likely it is there are more around. Find someone who is experienced in bat removal who can check and if there is a colony they can be moved and relocated depending on your local regulations.

This is a bat organization in my area and they have lots of info on their site:

well I guess I should've said MOST live in colonies :) or atleast most of the kind you'd find in your home. but I just read that online out of curiosity. They just mentioned that they can live behind walls and places you'd not even know they were there unless you look for clues. http://www.getbatsout.com/batinhouse.htm

wow I'm glad they have that vaccine! I guess if necessary to save a potential lethal situation its worth the money. but yikes on that price tag!
