For those whose kids watch Nickelodeon...

My daughter has switched from watching educational commercial free Playhouse Disney in the mornings to annoying commercial-ridden Nickelodeon. First of all -- YUK. I hate Spongebob Squarepants -- the one episode that featured Johnny Depp was not enough to convert me, I'm sorry -- but I'm getting off track...

Anyone seen the show iCarly? Doesn't the girl who plays Carly look like she could be Jae's daughter (or Jae when she was a teen)? I couldn't place her for the longest time until I popped in an STS disc and there she was!

If you don't watch Nickelodeon, by all means, don't start! It's not good for your IQ -- just consider this a ramdom rambling and get on with your active life before the sugar crash from the breakfast cereal kicks in and you can't get off the couch!!!

Yeah I totatly hear you. I can not stand Nick!

My DH and I switched our cable to the very basic cable(abc, nbc cbs and public TV) because we found our boys watching way too much. My older son(14) would figure out all the passwords we would put in for parental controls.

It was hard at first but now it isn't so bad. They watch less TV. and the TV they watch is educational.

My younger son(8) first comment was, "We get PBS again"!

I hear you. I do block the shows from that channel. Sponge Bob included. I would much rather my kids watch an x-men or spider man cartoon, . . if The Tick were still playing, . . .I'd let them watch that too (better yet even read the comics) but that poor language potty humor from the shows now adays, . . . really affects the kids. I hear it when I pick my kids up from school, it seems so funny to call someone a fart face or something worse. I can't even believe that some kids in my sons 2nd grade class watch Family Guy and South Park.

My son is addicted to SpongeBob, and I agree it is annoying! However, I love iCarly, I think it is an adorable show! I agree about the commercials, although my child does not beg and plead for every last thing he sees -- not yet, anyway.

My daughter, 7, is a big fan of iCarly and Wizards of Waverly Place (a Disney Channel show). I let her watch those after she's done her homework. They're not bad, although I wish the characters didn't talk with an "attitude" all the time. When she asks for stuff - which isn't often - I tell her she has to write a letter to Santa.

I have Cartoon Network blocked; their shows are horrible, IMO. They make Spongebob look good!

We love iCarly. I usually play the shows off On Demand (Comcast) which are commercial free - not sure if you have this in your area. I stay away from the regularly programmed shows since the commercials create all kinds of "I want that!!" from my DDs:eek: We also prefer watching movies :)

My little girl and boy love watching icarly and drake & josh!
As a matter of fact...i will find myself listening while im cleaning and chuckling to myself...
I agree about the commercials, very annoying.

Well, my daughter grew up watching Spongebob, and so far she's not an axe-murderer. I think the point is not to let them watch too much, and also to watch it with them. When my daughter was little, we'd sit and watch Spongebob together and we'd usually end up talking through most of it anyway. Also, whenever commercials come on, we'd have a conversation about them and discuss things like why that toy really isn't that great afterall, and why kids shouldn't drink juice with every meal, nor eat at McDonalds very often.

Now that she's 13, she really spends most of her free time drawing and reading. Sometimes TV becomes "forbidden fruit" and they think that it must be super awesome if we become too restrictive.

I do think that the Burger King Spongebob square butts commercial is completely inappropriate, though. I honestly think that most of the "creative people" at the ad agencies are smoking pot and giggling about trying to push the envelope with their corporate clients and assume that those old white guys aren't hip enough to get the joke--and often they don't get it.

My boys watch Nick. I hate the commercials too!!! But we love Spongebob. I think it's hilarious! :p And I don't mind iCarly or Drake & Josh. I actually kind of like iCarly. It's cute. I hate hate hate Fairly Odd Parents and Jimmy Neutron. I don't like them to watch those shows. I think they glorify bratty behavior. I also am not a huge fan of Cartoon Network. I so miss the days of Playhouse Disney and Noggin!!! But Nick isn't that bad -- in moderation.

ETA: I would rather my kids watch Spongebob ANY day over X-Men or Spiderman or any violent cartoons that glorify killing the bad guy. We're anti-violence. Spongebob is just plain funny, never violent. I guess it's just different strokes for different folks!! :)

Going out on a limb here...

...but I love Spongebob, and so do my kids!

I don't love everything on Nickelodeon, however. (DH loves "The Barnyard!)

And I'm forever turning off Cartoon Network because there's nothing that I like on that channel!

We all like Spongebob and iCarly.

The actress who plays Carly was also in School of Rock - great movie IMO.

My son is a Sponge Bob fan. He doesn't get half the humor in it as he is too young. Perhaps that's why I don't mind that he watches it? ;)

We watch Spongebob and Fairly OddParents. I think they're pretty funny. But we usually watch them on DVD or individual episodes on the website. None of us like the commercials. As others have said, different strokes for different folks. I'm sure there are other shows that some parents like that I'd prefer my kids not watch.

I did find one show we like from Cartoon Network, although it is ending this week: Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. The DVD was in my Netflix suggestions, and the older kids (and DH and I) have really been enjoying it. But again, we're watching it on DVD with no commercials.

I saw one episode of Spongebob years ago. The episode had a character running holding burning logs - my son & I both thought that seemed really stupid to be showing on a kids show.

My son has become a big fan of Pokemon.
