Flu Rant - LONG!

MAYNARDSMOM

I'm just blowin goff steam here but feel free to reply.

Like so many areas ours has been hit HARD with this whole nasty flu bug - whether reg flu or swine I don't know. I do know I'm OVER it!!! :mad:Last week youngest DS was home sick Monday, felt better Tuesday but went to the Dr just to be sure - he said keep him home one more day just to make sure. He was good, never had a fever. He then had some pressure in his ears which led me to believe it was sinus. WHEW - out smarted that one, or so I thought. Thursday oldest ds cam ehome achy & not feeling well. He held the couch down all wknd, again no fever just achy, headache & Yucky. Sunday he started sounding really sinusy (is that a word?) Kept him home today to make sure & keep him away from the bugs at school. I get a call at noon from the oh so lovely school nurse telling me youngest ds is in office, pale, achy, headache & sick to stomach! "But you don't understand! he was already sick last wk, r you sure you have the right parent?" He's home in bed now :(.
Dr wants to see them both tomorrow.

I am spraying like crazy, washing hands till my skin is about ready to fall off, windows open when it's nice to air out the house. I am feeling stressed  which I know is not good for me....deep breathes!
I'm drinking echinecea gr tea, saline nose spray, gargling w/salt water in hopes that I am strong enough to fight it iff.
DH & I have gotten our seasonal flu shot - boys have not - supposed to tomorrow .

OK thanks forl sitenign. I had to get that out. Theraputic - now onto my tea.......;)

Oh no Tami! What a major bummer!!!! :(
Do you still have the babies or are they going elsewhere while the boys are sick? I'll be praying that everyone feels much better very soon!!!!
(((hugs)))

I will add with my own personal flu rant.

My daughter who has had a flu shot every year since birth didn't get one yet this year because her pediatrician ran out in September. How does a doctor's office not have enough vaccine when the drug stores and grocery stores do?

She now tells me her History teacher was in school all last week sick as a dog with the flu.

So guess who is home now with the flu? My poor daughter who has studied all weekend for two tests which she will have to make up.

Working in a doctor's office I can attest to the flu frustration and the frustration at running out of shots. We place orders with the vaccine companies months ahead of time and are always "promised" our shipments will arrive on time and we will get as much vaccine as we order and year after year for whatever reason (it varies year by year) we end up empty-handed. So we try to compensate the next year by ordering even earlier and ordering more and same thing happens again. So we ask why is it that the local grocery store has flu vaccine and not us and we get some sort of "blah blah blah" answer. Sorry your daughter is sick but it's most likely not seasonal flu because that hasnt hit yet so it's not too late to get that vaccine from your local grocery store if need be. As far as H1N1 sickness, hope your daughter perks up soon if that is what she has! I'll be glad when flu season is over!!

Another victim of the flu here :( It has hit us hard for a full week!! It is not fun at all!! Coughing, aching, fever...They have even closed many of the schools in our area, since there are not enough students present to count it as an instruction day (more than 25% gone!!)

Flu, flu go away!!!

Jenn

So sorry for all of you being hit with this season's illnesses already (or again). Fortunately, KNOCK ON WOOD, we haven't had anything worse than the occasional achy stomach or headache which goes away within a few hours. Younger DS had a fever for 24 hours but was 100% the next day. We tend to 'miss' catching whatever everybody else around us has, so I'm hoping this year is no different.

What is making ME angry is all the kids in school who have symptoms. I work PT in our elementary school and I know a majority of these kids and their parents OUTSIDE of school, so I talk to a ton of these people. I can't tell you how many people I know whose kids ARE sick with a fever, or aches, or whatever, and the parent is dosing them up with meds and sending them off. EVERY DAY! I know for a FACT that there is ONE student, a 1st grader, who was IN SCHOOL TODAY and she was JUST diagnosed with H1N1 on SATURDAY!!! This drives me INSANE! Stop sending these kids to school sick and spreading the germs. UGH! OK.....sorry for turning YOUR rant into MINE!

EVERYBODY, FEEL BETTER FAST!

Gayle

I work in a school, too, Gayle and see the exact same thing. It is so sad to see these poor sick kids who just want their mommies :( Then we have to call and wait for someone to come and pick them up. It breaks my heart :(

AND it makes me MAD:mad:!! These parents know their kids are sick and are sending them to school and spreading these germy germs everywhere!! I am addicted to washing my hands and using sanitizer! Ugh!!

as a health care provider, I am already sick of the flu (not from the flu...yet :D) The lack of availability of either the seasonal or H1N1 vaccines and the huge demand, the sudden burst of activity, and the sometimes lax attitude of some! I've been recommending that kids obviously stay out of school until 24-48 hrs after the fever subsides (no meds can be on board to have the no fever determination), but also recommending that if they are still tired and achy, they MUST stay home and recuperate...far too many have weakened immune systems and return to school only to end up catching a secondary infection.
Best wishes for good health to all and best of luck!

I would be very angry also. Why would the teacher come to school that way & why would they allow him too?!?
I do hope your daughter is feeling better soon!

Gayle,
I hear what you're saying also. It's no wonder we can't stop this from spreading. I know you have mentioned clean eating in your household. I truly believe it makes the world of difference!! Good work! :D

I am taking both the boys to the Dr today. The youner one I had to pick up yesterday came home & went to bed, slept for several hrs, woke up & is fine ????? Thanks goodness!!!!

We are having a pretty nasty "epidemic" ourselves. I am at a college, and these things spread like wildfire around here. Add onto the that the allergies that people suffer from in this god-forsaken place, and you have an immuno disaster!

The thing that is causing the biggest problem is the school itself. It is school-wide policy that if you are sick with the flu STAY HOME. Ok, that's good. However, if you are sick with what you suspect is the flu, our medical center will not even let you in the door because they don't want the virus. And since our student insurance only covers visits to this school medical center, many of us can't afford to go anywhere else. Then, here's the punch line: if you don't have a doctor's note declaring that you are, in fact, down with the flu, you aren't allowed to miss classes. Professors start dropping grades as soon as you miss more than one class. As a matter of fact, some professors do not even care if you have a doctor's note; they will simply mark you absent anyway and the countdown begins.

So if we come into class sick, we are publicly lectured for putting everybody in danger of the catching the flu (understandably so). If we don't come to class because we are sick, we fail because they don't actually believe you are sick. This is an expensive university and failing isn't something you can take lightly. Until these retards get their act together and figure out how to balance attendance and sickness, it isn't going to get any better. I am now sick for the second time in 6 weeks and I am not allowed to miss anymore classes. I caught a break last week as one professor was out for a conference and another was sick herself (and both of her kids have H1N1 - not that this is a good thing!) so I was able to rest up a little without missing those particular classes.

The Ontario Medical Association is recommending to employers that they do not require sick notes this flu season, as it slows down the ability of doctors to provide service to those that they can actually help. Unless you really need medical attention for your flu (as some people really do for H1N1 or other flu viruses) or in a group that must be very careful, such as pregnant women, immunosuppressed people, etc., just stay home and keep away from everyone.

DH and I went for a check-up with our new GP and his office was a petri dish. Loads of sick folks and the office had also just received a new batch of flu vacs so people were pouring in the door.

Question...I thought seniors were at low risk for H1N1...so why do I see so many of them getting the shot? Isn't it being rationed to kids/the sick?

Sorry for all who are down with it. :(

This happened to us, too! My sons' teacher came in sick and told the students how sick and awful he felt and how three of his kids were very sick. Five days later, one of my boys got sick and ended up in urgent care and is going back to the doctor today because he has asthma and I'm worried about his lungs. He missed school and has a ton of make-up work to do plus we have to pay for these doctor visits and I'm very worried about his lungs. :( I can't believe the teacher would put the kids at risk like this.

And, this same teacher has the nerve to lecture the kids on how to keep from getting sick!!

I am frustrated with how the H1N1 vaccine has been distributed. It seems like it depends on where you live instead of people who are high-risk getting the vaccine first. Why is the general public getting the vaccine when there are pregnant women/asthmatics/diabetics not getting it?

Hope everyone stays healthy!

Erica
