Firefighters and why they are so buff!!!!

Fat is offensive when used the way he used it as it is offensive if a person was to call someone a twig or the like to describe a skinny person. There are people of all shapes and sizes in the world and on this board. The guy was being a jacka$$.Sorry I didn't mean to start anything it just really bothered me when I opened the thread as I have been"fat" or I perfer I was chunky.

it just might be from lugging that mother-heavy equipment those guys use. I dated one and got to see some of that stuff first hand. I would be She-ra if I could do all that.

Laura, I don't think we have many of LauraMax's type of cops here. If we did, I think the 911 calls from women would really spike!

Our firemen on the other hand ARE hot! And NOT from helping "fat" people! That remark seemed a little cruel. Just my $.02

If you're talking about the red headed guy, he's one ugly buttmonkey. The rest are much better looking than him if you ask me. One thing that kind of grosses me out about men physically is if they have a skinny neck but buff body....That looks too strange for me. He reminds me of John Basedow physically. Just too strange looking. Nice arms but the rest of him is goofy looking.

About the "fat" comment, America is more than 60% overweight anyway. I think the comment he made is a bit mean but guys will be guys. Especially if they're in the fire dept. or police dept. I'm from a family of cops and firemen and they make these jokes often. I'm not saying they're right about it but I'm used to it. If you guys have a complaint about the comment, why don't you email him and complain to him? I don't think Charlotte meant any harm. We make a lot of comments about people anyway even if we don't do it on this forum.

Just my .02

I apologize if I offended anyone. I won't talk about fat people or firefighters again! O.k? It is amazing how a mole hill can turn into Mt. Everest here!

I'm surprised so many got upset about the fat comment , too. A few weeks ago there was a thread that I thought was much harsher than this..???

Anyway, overweight firefighters, cops, etc is a real sticky point with me and I will try not to stay on my soapbox too long!! I see overweight firefighters, cops, prison guards , etc all the time. How can this be??? How can someone so out of shape save me if I'm passed out??? We have volunteer ff here, too. One is my friend and is out of shape. He told me about a test they had to pass. Had to crawl around with all their equipement on , etc. Said he could barely do it and was gasping so hard for air when he got out. Same with prison guards. We have work crews with prisoners out in my rural area. It is not unheard of for one to escape. You will have maybe 6 or 7 fit looking prisoners doing manual labor (hard!) on the vegetation on the side of the road with one guard with a belly hanging over watching them. How could he possibly catch them? Our local paper recently had an article stating that the military is having a hard time finding new recruits that meet the physical fitness requirements. I forget the exact percentage....but most have to lose weight before they can sign on. And many are having increasing trouble maintaining their weight. How strong of a nation can we be if our defense and safety departments are not fit??? ok getting off now...Marnie

I dated 2 firefighters and neither of them were "buff". :-( I mean the one guy was nicely toned but he was very thin so he wasn't "BIG" at all, and the other was just your average guy who didn't work out...

You do have to be strong though. That's not easy work at all!!!

That's the way my BF is Wendy. And I can honestly say of the 36 FFs in my town, none could actually be considered "buff."

I've had this discussion--whether public safety officers should be held to a more stringent physical standard--with lots of folks over the past few years. Our guys have to pass an initial physical fitness/psych test & that's pretty much it. They do have a physical each year but unless there's something seriously wrong, they keep their jobs. There are no actual physical standards to which they're accountable.

And the police--well I think for the most part they're in better shape b/c they really are more active. But there are a few who make me think, "jeez, if this guy has to chase a criminal on foot, we're in big trouble."

The worst, from my POV anyway, are the EMTs. We have a volunteer squad & I swear the majority of volunteers weigh 250+. I have this really narrow staircase in my house & I can guarantee you if something happened to me on my second floor they're gonna have to move the hospital to me, b/c there's no way these guys could even squeeze their way up my stairs, much less carry me down them.

And let's not jump on Charlotte--she innocently repeated someone else's comment. It's not her fault the guy was insensitive.

Where I am from if you are going to be a police officer, you are put through the academy. You do have to weigh a certain amount for your build. But as soon as you are out of the academy then it is a different story. They just don't seem to care as much. Now some do. Don't get me wrong.

Here the firefighters are mostly volunteers. So it is a combination of all different body types. But mention firefighters to me and alarms go off in my head! Just the word is HOT! Why is that?

I am with you, Maximus. I don't think Charlotte meant anything by her post. I think too it was out of innocence.

I think some of you may want to read Charlotte's 1st post again. Her brother asked his frined how he got such big guns (who happens to be a fire fighter) and HE said that HE obtained big guns by rescuing fat people. No where in there does it say "ff's have big guns from rescuing fat people".

Also, Charlotte did not make the comment...her brothers friend did...

Finally, with the disgusting rate of overweight and obese in our nation...if some one is being pulled from a burning building, odds are they are over weight or obese.

Another note...it's o.k. to call some one skinny...right? That's not crude or offensive...is it? However, that term is thrown all over this forum! We can have an entire thread about "skinny" celebrities but if we have one about "fat" celebrities....OHHH BOY! It hits the fan!

Half this thread contains disgust over the use of the word "fat" but it is exactly how you are discribing the ff's in your town. It's not o.k. to describe the victims using that work but it IS o.k. to describe the ff's that way...I think I get it know!

I think the issue was with the fact that it was advertised as "funny". It's funny that firefights are buff because they pull fat people from buildings.

And, no, it's not okay to call someone skinny WHEN IT'S USED IN A DEROGATORY MANNER, and I think someone else pointed out that if that term was used, people would take offense, so why is it okay to use fat?

It's not disgust over the use of the word "fat". The issue is with fat people being the butt (no pun intended)of the joke.

Yes, we can all agree that obesity is an epidemic. That doesn't give people the right to make fun of people who are overweight. We have all sizes and shapes of women (and men) who post on these forums. It's likely that no matter what group you target, someone here will be representative of that group.

Let's just NOT, okay?

I think adding "LOL!" after the comment is what is seen as offensive.

As for firefighters being buff or not: they can spend a lot of time just hanging around the fire house, waiting for a call to come in. I suppose they could spend that time working out (the buff ones) or eating doughnuts and high-fat foods (a fire fighter on FitTV's "10 years younger" show talked about the unhealthy foods and abundant snacks available at the fire house). Both groups can be "strong," but they will look different.

oh goodness. I think maybe we should just steer clear of some topics b/c people tend to vary on their viewpoints which can make for a very hot discussion - angering/upseting people no doubt. Truly, I don't think Charlotte or most people on this forum mean to offend, however, I do think some things should be left alone. It's all good people :)
