Firefighters and why they are so buff!!!!

What was the point of the post in the first place? There wasn't anything in the post about asking a question are the firemen in your town buff or not(which would be a good topic) it was pointing out that a fireman said he got buff pulling fat people not just people in general-he was making a jab at over weight people. If someone posted the fireman wasn't buff because he only pulled skinny people from buildings-I would be wondering the same thing as I am now what is the point of the post .Was you wanting people to laugh along?Anybody that can laugh at it must have never had a problem with weight. Everybody hasn't been a size 0-3 all there life we all have battles.
I have seen post like this before but I have always kept quiet maybe I do need midol-or maybe I am entitled to my thoughts like everyone else.We need to keep the boards positive and not laugh or try to make ourselves feel better at others expense. And I am truly sorry if I have said anything in my post that hurt anyone else's feelings.I know this is cyber world but I am a strong believer in karma.

My DH is a firefighter. The guy's comment was rude and realistically he probably doesn't rescue all that many people from burning buildings but there is some truth to what he said. DH and his crew work a lot of medical calls. Many of the people they are assisting are morbidly obese. The firefighters have to be very careful when doing lift assists or packaging people for transport because there is a high potential for injury in lifting very heavy people. DH has injured his rotator cuff in one of these types of situations and another guy in the department injured his knee on a medical call.

Whether or not a firefighter's job is mostly sedentary depends on where they work. DH is a shift commander at a combination professional/volunteer department. He and his crew average 10 calls a day: medical, wrecks and structure fires. That call volume plus hydrant and truck maintenance etc adds up to a very physically demanding day. DH works out, some of the guys don't. They do a lot of physical training. The ones who work out have an easier time with the training than the ones who don't. None of the professional firefighters on our department are overweight. However, most of them are not what you would call buff either. But they are strong. A lot of it is from wearing all the gear and carrying all the equipment. A full suit of protective gear plus air pack weighs about 50 pounds. The hoses and other equipment are very heavy also. Hydrant maintenance requires them to open the hydrants which is also physically demanding since they do a large number of them in one day. DH usually has a sore back the day after they do hydrant maintenance.

Many of them have very good cardio endurance from wearing all the gear and fighting fires. DH does very little cardio. When we went to Enchanted Rock and hiked up a tall rock for him and his buddies to do some rappelling training, he went up the side of the rock like he was part mountain goat. He wasn't even winded. I on the other hand was gasping for air and was probably a very lovely shade of purple. I was doing quite a bit of cardio and interval training at the time so it was a rather humbling experience.

I'm going to try to attach a link to a pic of my hubby. He's not buff per se, but I think he's pretty hot! :D
