Feeling sick and need some advise please

ShyWolf

Cathlete
Since this past Monday evening I've have been dealing with a terrible stomach bug. Everytime I try to eat my stomach protests in sharp pains and everything seems to want to get out ASAP ( very loose bowels , extreme pain etc. ) It also just happens to be TOM for me too so it does not help.

I've tried to eat but I know I'm not eating enough , this stomach bug is begininng to show it's effects....feeling very tired & weak.
I usually workout to Cathe 5-6 times / per week but so far I've only been able to workout this past Mon, Tues and Thursday .
Wednesday and today I feel so sick to my stomach it just hurts so much plus I just don't have the energy today and I feel awfully guilty about it. I also will be walking with my 3 kids tonight so they can go trick or treating ...we usually walk for 2 hours straight. So I'm saving my energy for that.

Plus does any one know what I can eat so my stomach doesn't feel like it's about to react again...I'm beginning to feel rather weak now and I don't like this one bit.

Please any advise welcomed.

I'm sorry to hear you are having a hard time. Are you sure it isn't something like appendicitis or something more serious? (NOT to scare you but want to make sure you are okay!) Don't feel guilty about your exercise. You won't lose that much in a week or so. Take time to heal and you will come back strong once you are feeling better. Keep us posted.

I remember a few years ago when the flu was going around big time where I live. My Aunt got so very sick with symptoms you have decribed. Nothing would stay down. She called Ask A Nurse (a health care option here) the nurses all said to drink warm 7-up and eat crackers.
I know that isn't a normal diet for exercisers and health food enthusiasts, but it works. I've used it at different times when my stomach was upset. This helps to keep you from getting dehydrated. Fruit juices may have too much acid for the first times of trying to get something to stay down.
The soda in the crackers help to relieve some of the acids and it gives you a little something so as not to starve to death. :)
Then gradually add things that are light on the stomach, diluted fruit juices and soups and water. Oatmeal, toast....you know...things not spicey.
Black teas and cola containing caffeine are diuretics and could cause further dehydration.

If you aren't feeling better in a few days, make sure to rule out anything more serious.
Like Debbie said, keep us posted as to how you are getting along.

These are just my experiences, I'm sure that others will have some very good ideas as well.

Hope you get better very very soon.

I agree that crackers and soda are probably the best things to start with, or either toast and soda. I hadn't heard about 7UP, but coke (regular coke) or ginger ale is also helpful. Supposedly there's something in the coke syrup that is soothing to the stomach. In fact, coke syrup used to be sold on its own for that purpose. Sometimes I also just like a glass of very cold ice water to sip. If you can keep that down, you then might want to move to chicken soup. It's very important, though, with anything you try to eat, to take it slow. Eat or drink just a very little at a time, wait a while, and then eat a little more.

The other thing I would suggest is to not exercise at least for a couple of days. I know it's hard. I had a chest cold in September, and continued to exercise even though I know that's not recommended. I wound up getting a bad case of bronchitis, and had to completely stop the exercise for a couple of weeks. You're weak now, and your body needs to heal. By exercising now, you're using up strength that your body needs to get better. It's better to miss a few days now, than to get really sick and miss weeks. I'm sorry to nag, I'm a mom, I can't help it!

:( I'm so sorry you're not feeling well! REST. Drink fluids and try to keep soda crackers down. I know it's easy for me to sit here and say this, but don't workout right now, or do something VERY light and easy. Could you have the flu? If it doesn't ease up in a couple of days, I would definitely see a doctor. Good luck!!

Hi - I've just recovered from a stomach bug so I know how yuck you must be feeling.

Yogurt is what my Mum always gave me when I had an unsettled tummy and I still find it works the best for me. I don't mean the flavoured ones though. Just the plain stuff. Also dry toast works. Stay hydrated and I hope you feel better soon.

I have IBS and when it gets severe (as in can't keep food down or in me) the doctor suggests:

First 12 hours no food
popsicles maybe chicken broth

Second 12 hours
bread products, pretzels, chicken broth

2nd day:
Same as above but I can add LF cottate cheese, yogurt (she prefers apple or peach flavors but I never asked why).

3rd day:
Same as above but add lean meats like chicken, bland potato, etc.

Usually by the 4th day I'm pretty well recovered. Hope you are feeling better!

It is so good to find someone else with IBS! I have it too and just hate it, the pain is worse then having a baby I say LOL but I controll it with Librax! that is a wonder medicine for me!!!
But now on the subject, my kids pediatrician always says to offer a tablespoon of warm no fizz caffiene free coke every 15 minutes and if they hold that down go to clear liquids and popcycles. then the next day you can gradually go back to a normal diet, but if you are holding stuff down I would go with clear liquids and the crackers also.

Hi ShyWolf!! I'm sooo sorry to hear that you've caught a stomach bug. First of all are you running a fever? I don't think you should be eating anything. Your overtaxing the stomach forcing it to digest food that it definitely doesn't want. I would just drink plenty of fluids so you don't get dehydrated. Don't gulp either just take little sips at a time. Also call up the doctor & find out whether or not you need to come in for a visit. Hmmm walking 2 hrs. w/the kids? I don't know about that either. I think you need to hit the bed quite frankly. Feel better, Kathy:(

Last year, a nasty bout of a gastrointestinal virus was going around here. I couldn't eat much (and have it stay put) for almost a week (which wasn't unusual with this thing).

If this is your situation, the best thing to do is go on a BRAT diet (banana, rice, apple sauce and toast) until things calm down, then start adding broth and other easily-digested solids (cooked veggies, for example) back in.

Hugs to you all ...thanks for all the info
I went out and got me some soda to drink and some tea plus some baby rice cereal to see if I can take it without my stomach acting up ..so far all I have been able to keep down is the soda and dry toast. My stomach does protest but so far so good although the stomach twisting comes and goes it's still bothersome.

This is just horrible as I can't even recall the last time I felt this badly.

I didn't workout today but feel really weird, funny how I miss Cathe's grueling workouts maybe if I feel a bit better I may try to do something Cathe tommorrow ... we'll see.

At the moment I have no choice to take my kiddos out tonight they have been looking so forward to Halloween, I'll just take it easy.

One good thing is that I'll not be able to indulge in all that candy.

Thanks once again ..I just pray I start to feeling better really quick ... keeping my fingers crossed.

I know it's tempting to work out if you feel a little better, but you really should give it at least a couple of days, maybe more, after you can eat real food and keep it down. I know I'm repeating myself, but your body needs to get better before you should go back to working out.

I hope that you are feeling better soon! By the way, somebody mentioned popsicles. Those, or ice pops are good, when you feel up to them.

Hi ShyWolf,

Sorry to hear about your stomach ailment. I've had some similar ailments, and they are NO fun. One from a trip to Egypt I made last year -- great trip, but somewhere along the way I guess I managed to drink the water. Another time I came down with salmonella -- free chicken wings sounded good at the time!! :p

In both cases I ended up with GI troubles for about three weeks, similar to yours. The first thing I'd recommend is make sure you're getting enough fluids, it's easy to become dehydrated and that would contribute to your feeling tired and weak. I'd also try laying off the workouts for a little while. Your body is already stressed in dealing this bug, trying to work out as well may be impeding your recovery.

As for food, sort of mushy bland stuff, like oatmeal or cream of wheat (in small amounts) worked for me. Also the old standby chicken soup or broth also helped, and if it's got some salt in it, it may help you stay hydrated.

Also, if it lasts more than a week, you'd probably want to see your doctor.

Hope you feel better soon. :)
