Feeling faint

Sometimes while working out I feel faint for a moment, so I stop for a minute or so & It goes away. It happens mainly when I'm lifting heavy weights but sometimes when I do cardio also. I drink 32 to 64 ounces of water during my workout because I do sweat very heavily. Why does this happen? I don't have any health problems. I'm 48 & have been working out for 7 years, w/cathe for the last 4. :)

Wiggie,

It happened to me when I first moved up to Cathe intensity. Yours could be for an entirely different reason and I am not qualified to assess. I just want to share what my issue was. It was nutrition. I was advised to eat better and it worked. My diet was adequate on whole carbs, fruits and veggies. I had to up protein and calcium. I also took prescribed vitamin/mineral supplements.

Does this happen only when working out, or do you have a little "dizziness" or lightheaded feeling any other time?

It's possible that you are getting depleted of potassium stores because of the sweating and concomitant hydration; 32-64 oz of fluid does seen like a lot for a workout.

Possibly you could make part of your hydration come from a sports drink that repaces some of the minerals you've lost from the sweating.

Just a thought -

Another thought. Are you holding your breath while doing the reps and not realizing it? It sounds like I'm being silly, but I'm not -- not breathing during the sets because you're concentrating on the muscle could cause your problem.

That's the first thing that came to my mind as well.

Another thing to check, especially if this has just been happening recently, you may have an inner ear infection that is throwing off your balance.

Hello,

All of these are great suggestions but....I would really go see your doctor for an evaluation. He or she is the best person to ask and to make sure that you do not have any underlying illness or health issues. :) Stay well.

This happens to me sometimes and it is usually low blood sugar. If I haven't eaten much food on a particular day I make sure I have a piece of fruit or something before I go to the gym.

I had similar "feeling faint" episodes usually while hiking in warm weather. I fainted one night while sitting down before eating dinner. I ended up having an expensive cardiology workup because of fear of heart arrhythmia. I was drinking a lot of water over the course of the day. Turned out my sodium was getting too low. I now add a little salt to my dilute gatorade and problem is resolved. You might need labs done to see if anything is out of balance. That's a lot of water to drink in one workout.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to try all of your suggestions. I know I don't eat enough protein & I don't take my calcium supplements like I was told to. My blood sugar is low on occasion so at my next physical I'll be sure to mention the problem I'm having. Thanks again :) :)
