Fat Loss: Clean Eating vs "Everything in Moderation"

RE: Fat Loss: Clean Eating vs

Hm. Yes I agree cutting out an entire food group would be an unhealthy habit...except for vegetarians of course.

As a clarification to my previous post, personally I do eat from all food groups (meat & fish, dairy/egg, vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts & healthy fats).

But I don't eat sugar except on very rare occasions. I also don't eat regular breakfast cereal...I stick to oatmeal or kashi. I also don't eat, except for very rare occasions, snack foods like doritos etc or cookies. Except for very rare special treats.

I guess that meets a definition to me of clean eating. But some people might call it obsessive and a disorder? Not sure? Maybe not. Hope not. Anyhow, cutting out the sugar and snack foods has made huge improvements in my skin...when I add them back IN even if only for a day or a meal, I get the cystic acne again that I have struggled for 20 years to clear up to no avail... until I made those specific changes in my eating....those are at least one of the physical changes I alluded to. Squeaky clean eating (to include cutting out breakfast cereal) has done it. If it was all about whether or not I'd fit into my "skinny jeans" I'd probably still be eating them!

So, just thought I'd clarify my previous post....I haven't seen all the posts on clean eating around here...maybe other folks have even more radical restrictions that you are all talking about that I am not aware of...

My issue with "everything in moderation" is that it is rather undefined. Everyone has a different definition, all over the board. 60 percent of americans are overweight and I'd bet that most of that 60 percent also insist they eat "a varied diet...everything in moderation".

Jen I do agree mostly with you. I have been reading "Eat to Live" by Dr Joel Fuhrman...oh my, reading about how bad animal protein is really opened my eyes. And the countries that don't eat animal fat and eat alot of raw fruits and vegeys and how LOW the cancer rate is there compared to the US!!! I have no clue if I could ever be a vegetarian, but after following the Zone for 6 years alot of the things Barry Sears (the author) stated are just plain false. I have only done "Eat to Live" for 4 days and still have more reading to do, but I feel great so far and am never hungry...to me clean eating isn't all about fat loss, it could be about your health much more....:)...Carole

RE: Fat Loss: Clean Eating vs

I believe we should all eat foods in moderation. When you eliminate a food group your create imbalances. The human body is capable of adapting to most of what it eats. Sure some food is better than others but hey, if eating a little bit of chocolate or pizza in moderation ever now and then gives you less stress its better to have the pizza than have the stress. However if you’re eating pizza everyday its better to have the stress!!!

Calories have different thermogentic structures. Protein takes more calories by the body to use than fat or carbohydrate, but lets get real…is it really going to be that much difference? Doubtful. Eat protein. Eat fat. Eat carbs. Eat just keep the energy balance in order.

Thanks for the interesting replies, everyone! As with everything, you need to do what works for you.

For me, "everything in moderation" works fine. (So what's a little ab flab?) I do focus on healthy eating and cooking for my family, but I don't obsess about every morsel. I'm like Bobbi in that a little goes a long way. I'm also like Nancy in that I LOVE ice cream, but I am not overweight and REALLY enjoy eating it, so why shouldn't I? (And why shouldn't she?)

Food is SO much more than fuel and should be enjoyed!

P.S. I don't even really like Doritos. I was just using them as an example.:)
