exercise bike questions

i'm moving soon so i'm deciding which furniture, and everything else in my house is getting tossed or going to goodwill. my exercise bike is broken. has been for years. the only part i'm concerned with is fixing resistance. it's a recumbent bike. i've been using ankle wts as my only resistance, which used to be very challenging but isn't now.
sooo...should i:
1.buy a cheap spin bike
2. fix my bike resistance(bf is pretty handy)
3. get a trainer for the outside bike.

If you buy a "cheap spin" bike, chances are that it will not last long if you use it a lot and you'll have another broken bike. If you go with this option, get a good bike that will last.

If you get a trainer for the outside bike, it's an ongoing expense and depending on the weather where you live you might not always want to be outside. If you have an indoor bike you can exercise anytime you like.

If money is an issue and your boyfriend can fix the bike and won't procrastinate in getting it done, I would go with that option.

I've been contemplating your number three option.

Ell-P can you explain how a trainer would be an on going expense?
I was thinking a trainer for my outside bike would be like getting two bikes in one.

Can anyone recommend a good trainer and an outside bike to use with one.

thanks

I have a spin bike and I have a racing bike that i put on a trainer to ride indoors. Using a trainer is not an ongoing expense. I would say that if you enjoy riding outside then buy a bike and use a trainer to ride it indoors. This option gives you the opportunity to ride indoors or out. If you do not intend to ride outdoors then get a spin bike.

If your BF can fix your bike and you are happy with it and also want to save some money, then by all means fix the bike that you already own.

Oops! Sorry, my mistake! I misunderstood "trainer" when i originally read the post.:p

i would go with the trainer. here are a couple of websites you can browse:
www.performancebikes.com
www.nashbar.com

i have a Travel Trac Century V from Performance and have had it for 5 yrs. works just fine. if I had my choice I would go w/ Cycle Ops but they're more expensive.

you can do some great work on a trainer! good luck!

well, if the resistance got fixed on my recumbent bike, it would probably be challenging enough and work fine. i'm not sure how much the replacement parts cost or how to get them.

i love the idea of the challenge a spin bike would give. my legs seem to be superhuman. so it takes alot to actually get doms or 'feel' anything there.

i never ride my outside bike, but i think the new me will. and i'm moving near some trails. i could also put bf's bike on the trainer. maybe he would like to ride it once in awhile too. my current bike was a cheap one from kmart or walmart, and if the kids hadn't broken the resistance knob, i'm sure it would still work.

well, i think cost is going to be a factor. i thought the trainer would be a cheaper option, but the ones i've seen cost close too 100 or more. not sure if bf will be bothered with fixing the bike or not.
