I would LOVE to take the stairs, but you aren't allowed to in this building. Because of the tight security, you have to take the elevators up to your floor (there are security guards posted at the elevators who check your ID before you can go up). There isn't a separate set of stairs between the lobby and the plaza (that's where the escalator runs). If you were to go into the stairwell, you'd be locked in because there's no way to open the doors from inside. In the event of a fire or other emergency where you stay off the elevators, the locks on the stairwell doors are disabled. But I think it would be great to be able to take the stairs up to my office on the 25th floor once a day for some extra exercise.
I also don't consider standers "rude", just roadblocks. And I really don't understand the standing thing. If the escalator moved a little faster, I guess...I also don't stand on the moving floor at the airports. I walk on those. If I had my daughter on the escalator or the moving floor, I would stand still. There's definitely a safety issue with children. Plus, they just think those things are the most fun inventions next to a swingset.
