Escalators - do you climb, or do you stand?

At my office, there is a really large escalator. When I get on it, I walk up it like I would normal stairs. But a lot of times, I get stuck behind standers and it makes me insane! I really don't have the patience to stand there for the escalator to make it to the end. It just seems so incredibly lazy to me! I mean, if you can't climb up it, take the elevator!

When I go to the mall to go shopping I stand on the escalator. Call me lazy, but all the walking I do at the mall I need a break! But I will walk up it when there are alot of people behind me.

LOL!!! I do the exact same thing! My husband constantly tells me that I walk too fast.

Generally, the rule is walk on the left, stand on the right, but so many people just don't get it and stand side by side. I always get right up behind them and say "excuse me".}(

I usually take the stairs.;-) The only time I take them is with my kids, they think they are fun! I also just stand still because I don't want to give them any more ideas. LOL!

I usually climb them but not always...when I want to climb them and get stuck behind someone who is waiting it annoys me also but actually, we shouldn't get mad...if we want to walk, I guess we should just take the stairs, no? :)

Sounds like taking a deep breath and relaxing might help!!! This seems like one of those things that a person would be better letting roll off them instead of going insane over it. Like Wendy said take the regular stairs if you don't want to stand.

I didn't know it was rude to stand on escalators. I thought that was their purpose. I am so paranoid because there are so many things americans consider rude, it is overwhelming. Perhaps it's my lack of good manners, but it does get overwhelming sometimes. I do try to be nice, but I guess you can't please every body. ;( There is always something unintentional or that I didn't know, but at least I can understand the ones that are like me and not make any unfair judgements about them.

Edited to clarify: Obviously if someone walks close to me, I let her/him pass.

Mariela, we don't really think people are rude, we just want them to get out of the way. :)

I don't usually run on escalators because my six year old has this fixation that he is going to get sucked into the other end. :)

cute work out clothes are good for AT LEAST an additional 10-15 calories burned!

I was the same way when I was a kid! Now I usually walk up it if there is nobody in my way. If there is, I take a deep breath and enjoy the rest. BUT the one thing that does annoy me is when I am getting close to getting on and someone races me to it or jumps in front of me and then they stand there in front of me when I try to pass. Hurry up and wait...

At work, there are four escalators going from the lower lobby to the upper lobby - no steps. I wish they would post a sign about the standing vs. walking rules, because I'm a walker, and usually in a hurry. I don't understand why healthy people just decide to plop in the MIDDLE of the step and ride the dang thing the whole way up.

It's not enough to ruin my morning, but it does get me a little wound up while I'm stuck behind them. These are usually the same ones who come to a COMPLETE stop as soon as they step off the escalator so that they can figure out where they need to go - while the rest of us just pile up behind them!!

I may quit my regular job and become a Hall Monitor for the city - then I can issue citations and demerits with authority! (I wonder if there's any money in that?)

(I really mean this all as a laugh at my own impatience, so please, if you're a 'stander' don't get offended! ;-) )

I always climb unless there are some step hogs in front of me. Shelley, I agree with you, that is proper escalator etiquette, but apparently a lot of people just don't know.

I would LOVE to take the stairs, but you aren't allowed to in this building. Because of the tight security, you have to take the elevators up to your floor (there are security guards posted at the elevators who check your ID before you can go up). There isn't a separate set of stairs between the lobby and the plaza (that's where the escalator runs). If you were to go into the stairwell, you'd be locked in because there's no way to open the doors from inside. In the event of a fire or other emergency where you stay off the elevators, the locks on the stairwell doors are disabled. But I think it would be great to be able to take the stairs up to my office on the 25th floor once a day for some extra exercise.

I also don't consider standers "rude", just roadblocks. And I really don't understand the standing thing. If the escalator moved a little faster, I guess...I also don't stand on the moving floor at the airports. I walk on those. If I had my daughter on the escalator or the moving floor, I would stand still. There's definitely a safety issue with children. Plus, they just think those things are the most fun inventions next to a swingset.

Since I usually just see escalators in airports, when I've got luggage with me, I stand on them. But if I ever see any when I'm not lugging my carry-ons with me, I will walk up them (or the stairs that are next to them, which is even faster most times!).

Another thing is those moving sidewalks in airports. I either walk next to them (and end up being faster than people on them, even most of the walking ones!) or walk fast on them. Except on my return trip, sometimes, when I don't feel like moving that fast!
