Hi Brenda, I've been doing Zone-based eating for almost a year now. The first time I did it I actually gave up, not because I found it difficult -- it gets easier with time -- but because my mom (who lives abroad) came to visit for the holidays last year, and she did nothing but feed me because, according to her, my waist looked like "the abdomen of a praying mantis". Her metaphor, not mine.
I picked the Zone up again last spring. I bought the follow-up book, Mastering the Zone, and found out that I can tweak the diet if I got hungry less than three hours after a meal. It turns out that my body can handle more than the recommended carbs. I also tweaked the diet so that I was eating 102 grams (my body weight then) of protein a day, since I was looking to gain muscle, and body builders follow a rule of eating 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Once I matched my protein grams to my body weight and added an extra block of carbs per meal, the hunger stopped. I felt I was on an eating plan, not a "die-yet". Since spring I gained 5 lbs. but went down a dress size. It has taken a long time to get to this point, but I'm happy where I am.
Yes, it's complicated at first. But give it a chance. All I did was pick out my favorite foods among the list of favorables and stocked my fridge and pantry with those. Then I started measuring my meals and did so for two weeks just to see how it would look on my plate. This way I learned to eyeball my portions, which is good, because I am not measuring my food for the rest of my life!
I hope you find success in the Zone, and if not, I hope you find a good fit with the other diet plans in this forum that others have found success with.
