Not Cathe, but for what it is worth...

I had a chocolate problem too, and sometimes I revert back to 20 hersey kisses every now and then, I just shake my head as I kick back and eat those little devils. But I read a little while ago a tip from Cathe, try brushing your teeth when you get that craving. It is hard to enjoy it to its fullest when you are minty fresh. I also carry around a pack of minty gum. I know it isn't the same as the chocolate, but it keeps my mouth moving so it is a little easier to walk away from the chocolate.

Next time you get the earge place a piece of gum in your mouth and pretend Cathe is standing in front of you looking at you like you have lost your mind. I know that is what I do. Sometimes late at night when I just need a little kick, I sneek a bite of chocolate and look around to make sure no one is looking, espeically my pretend Cathe. :+

It sure is a motivator to walk away though, but oh so HARD!
Good luck!

Try switching to the dark chocolate doves. Dark chocolate is better than milk, of course in moderation. Plus maybe with the more bitter flavor you won't want as many.

Good luck.

One more suggestion. If you say you CANNOT give them up...you WILL NOT give them up. It's a head thing :)

I have a suggestion. I figure it doesn't matter how much of something I eat, I'm always going to want more in a few minutes. so, if I'm going to want it anyway, I may as well not have any to start with. It's hard sometimes but it's easy. Just don't put it in your mouth. I went all through Christmas, parties and everything without eating ANY goodies. No fattening pasta salads, no treats. It really aggrivates people when you won't eat junk food with them.
But I was sure happy when I'd leave a party without breaking my resolve! good luck

A great big ditto to this:
"so, if I'm going to want it anyway, I may as well not have any to start with." and: "Just don't put it in your mouth."

There were some foods that controlled me....sheesh, I was being controlled by an inanimate object and it's name was Hershey's Milk Chocolate! Once a month, I ate a whole bag of Nuggets, or a six-pack of bars, or a 16oz. block....you get the picture. I had to make the decision that there were a couple things I just had to abstain from, because they were "trigger" foods that caused me to overindulge- and the chocolate was one. Haven't had it, or missed it!...in over three years. I have had other things with chocolate in them, but no more of that candy for me, because I know one or two will never be enough.

I have been enjoying reading all these ideas and suggestions, and I have to giggle a little. We are starting to sound like Chocolate Anonymous!:+

My name is Melanie, and I have been a chocolate addict... :+

You know how we make charts for our children? How about making a chart for yourself? Maybe If you start off small like no chochlate for one day treat yourself with one the next day then go two or three days then a week and give it to yourself on your cheat day.

I know how you feel I had to give up coke a cola and I have not had a drip since New Years. Only Water

Similar to the cleaning teeth idea... I find that chocolate (I like the dark stuff) actually stains my teeth a bit. So, now and then, I whiten them with one of those trays that you can buy. After doing that, I don't want chocolate because I don't want to stain my teeth again, especially as whitening them too often makes my gums sore!

Also, I wonder if what you have is a sugar addiction. I eat very little added sugar these days, and find that the longer I go without it the less I want it.

Deb40, I agree with your comment "It really aggrivates people when you won't eat junk food with them."

Why is that?? I feel so much better since I gave up added sugar, I can't believe what a difference it makes to my energy and concentration. But people at work look at me as if I'm from another planet when I won't join in with the cakes, biscuits, etc that they bring into the kitchen. I've had comments like "oh how strange" and "oh, that's why your so skinny then", said in a very negative way! Anyway, just ranting... lets go back to talking about chocolate!

Hi

I had the similar problem just a couple months ago. I couldn't stop thinking about certain pastries at Starbucks, I couldn't sleep well becuase I thought about them all night, and I worked at Starbucks too! How I got over it? I actually ate them. I would eat whatever I was thinking about the night before the next morning, and I would tell myself that I already fulfilled my crave if I wanted to eat more. Then I regulated myself to eat only one each week (i.e. "I already had one, and I will have the other one next week." Positively thinking!). AFter a while, I just had enough, and I felt that they are just bad for me--health and appearance--(even though I knew it all along, I guess it didn't hit me or I just didn't care) then I stopped wanting them. I mean, I did gain 10 lbs. since I started working at Starbucks x( but at least I don't crave for anything from Starbucks anymore.

Another way you can try is to eat flavored yogurt, a protein bar, or a piece of turkey jurkey (when you crave for something salty) right when you want chocolate. It usually stops your crave when you have something else in your stomach.

Hope it helps :7

Hi Getfitforlife!

Oh the dreaded "C" word (no not me :)). Get it ALL out of the house. If your craving still has you throwing on some shoes and driving to the nearest convenience store, buy the smallest portion available and switch to dark chocolate (it is better for you).

If you don't find your self zipping out the door to the store, then try to brush your teeth to shift the craving to mint (I know what your thinking....York Peppermint Patty right? Well if you must it at least has dark chocolate coating :)

If the craving comes back after brushing your teeth, tell yourself "for every time I think of chocolate I will have to drop down and do 10 push ups"...I can already see your pumped up pecs from here ;-)

If all else fails, I suggest you invest in a straight jacket :7

If there is one time of the month I give in to the craving it is THAT time. You are crazy to think you can beat the craving that time of month :7 :7

I know I am shedding a little light on this topic but in all seriousness, remember, the main thing is keep it out of the house to avoid temptation. If you make it inconvenient to get it, your less likely to give in to the craving as quickly. Good luck, I know how hard it is to try to break this habit.

Cathe, I like your idea about have to do 10 push ups for every time you think of chocolate. I'd be doing push ups all day long, and I will do pretty much anything to NOT have to do push ups.;) Well, except for during your workouts... but I still grumble to myself while I'm doing them though!:+

Getfitforlife, I agree with Cathe. Keep them out of the house. That's what I have to do. I have had a couple instances where I have actually rummaged through my pantry hoping and praying that there is some kind of mystery chocolate hidden in there that I don't know about. Luckily there never is, because if there were you can count on the fact that I would have demolished it!!:7

Hi Katie,

I too am a choc-aholic. For me it's not only the taste of the chocolate but the smooth creamy feeling it has in my mouth that gets to me. Certainly, Cathe's suggestions are the way to go but for those days (like that time of the month) when you need a chocolate fix, I have a low fat chocolate mousse recipe that is very easy to make and taste so rich you'll swear you were eating the real thing.

Certainly even a health modified dessert will add pounds if it's consumed in large quantities. This mousse, which I usually make in pie form, has a very rich taste and a dense texture, so hopefully you won't want to consume a huge serving. You'll get your choco fix and some health benefits too.

If you (or any our fellow chocolate addicts are interested in trying it, let me know. I know this is primarily Cathe's forum so I don't know if it's appropriate to post the recipe here.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

Hi Teals!

Just read your response and I would LOVE the recipe for that chocolate mousse, do you think you could email it to my Yahoo address? It's [email protected].....I would really appreciate it. thanks:9

To Working Mom, I'll send it to you this evening. To fellow choco-holics, I'll post the recipe in the open forum.

Hope you like it.
