Dumbbell Storage Suggestions Needed

Cathlete
I've been doing mainly PUB, and some MIS and PH, but as I'm fairly new at this, I am using dumbbells only -- no bar yet. I have sets of 3 lb. (ashamed to admit it!), 5, 7, 8, and 10 lb. dummbells -- where in the world do you keep these for easy accessability? I workout in my living room as the tv in bedroom has no vcr-dvd. Any good ideas?

Thanks so much!

Great idea == now I have to figure out what kind of store would sell something like this -- and of course I'll find something I like for $100 probably!!!!!

Anyhow, thanks much. I do have a large wicker planter bucket that I never got rid of when my huge plant died, and I might just try that for the time being. Really like your idea, though.

I got this picture from Amazon - did a search for "copper tub". They have a bunch of them, though I didn't see any with lids. Happy hunting!

I use these power blocks and find them to be perfect! They are adjustable dumbells and mine are graduated 3,6,9,12,15,18, and 21 pounds. Before I got them, I would avoid my strength work because I knew I had to drag out several different dumbbells, so much equipment to get out and so much to put away. Now I just grab one in each hand and I'm ready to work out. The weight change is quick and it doesn't take me any longer than it takes Cathe to switch weights. Just a thought...if you have to spend a lot of money on a fixture to hide your weights, you might just spend the money on weights that are easy to hide instead. I keep them under my bed with my step.

Amy -- From picture, it looks like you have to hold a thick set of weights -- isn't it awkward? Is there a double bar to hold it, or just how does it work? I'm really curious about this, only thing is I just bought all the weights I really now for right now but might be interested in the future if I (hopefully)go heavier.

Allison -- Where did you manage to find a covered tub? Thanks again!

My set is more of a woman's set. It has a foam padded handle that is really no bigger than most other dumbbells. Here's a picture.

She's using about 15 pounds.
I have little children and they are less interested in these. When I used to bring out a variety of weights, if I didn't get them put away before the kids woke up, they would "try their skills" and inevitably drop them. They are very easy to put away in one trip.

Rhonda - I got the picture by finding it on the web, right-clicking on "Properties", then copying and pasting the whole "properties" line in my message. It should work as long as the URL/address for the picture ends in ".jpeg".

Normandy - my mother-in-law found our tub with lid at an antiques store. It used to just sit in our dining room, empty, as decoration until a lightbulb went off in my head and I realized it was perfect for weights storage.

I have a dumbbell rack from "Body Solid" that is like a pyramid, with room to hold dummbbells on each side (up to 6 pairs). It's about 3 1/2-4 feet tall, and about 3 feet wide at the base. I love it! It makes the weights so easy to store and to pick up. Now I just need to find a solution for storing my "extra" dumbbells (my 2, 30#ers and my 1, 35#er.) Right now, I just put them on the mat that the dumbbell rack sits on.

I looked at that site, Linda, but there are so many different kinds of racks! Which one do you have -- is there a lot of assembly work involved, and what did you pay for shipping? Also, would it look really out-of-place in the corner of a living room? I like the idea of a rack that you and Kathryn suggested, but I don't know if I want to pay $50+ for it.

Thanks so much to all of you for your great suggestions.

I keep 2 sets of ankle weights, assorted barbell plates, plate mates, one 30lb dumbbell and from 2-20lb dumbbells in a standard sized milk crate.

I took three poster sized framed pictures and attached them together in the back to create a 3 panel screen. I keep my milk crate, my step cube, barbell pad, 2 medicine balls, weighted gloves and 3 folded exercise mats behind my 3 panel screen in my living room where I work out.

My home office is a few paces away and I store my step bench and stability ball under the desk. The step doubles as a foot rest. And I keep my barbell in the closet in the living room.

To all you great people with your wonderful ideas -- I think I will eventually end up with the compact rack, but since I am trying to convert from VHS to DVD tapes, I have to cut expenses on something right now. Or maybe I'll come across an interesting chest with cover when I'm not looking for it! Anyhow, for now I guess it's under the couch or on top of the long, partially hidden coffee table in my den!

Really do appreciate all your time and suggestions.

Don't be ashamed at all because I use my all the time:) Anyway to answer your question I workout in my living room and use to keep them under the footstool next to the couch but now I keep them on the floor in the pantry right next to the living room which is so much better because they are out of the way:) And for my barbell and plates well when you get a barbell I keep my behind the couch and the plates under the end table.

Barbara -- After reading your reply, just realized I have a closet right outside my den and surely I could clear a shelf off and keep them there for the time being. Ms. Brilliant here never thought of that till reading your reply!

Anyhow, thanks again everyone.
