Dry dog food?

We have a new dachshund puppy and I have been feeding "Olivia" Chicken Soup for the Puppy dry food. My 1 yr old dachshund "Mary Sue" keeps eating it so I can't leave it on the floor like i would like to. I wanted to know what dry dog food everyone uses. I read Artemis is the best but no one sells it where we live. TIA for any wisdom you have learned. I've been online all morning trying to figure it out. Peggy

I have a golden retriever with some allergy issues so I am using a grain free food called Taste of the Wild. I feed the Venison and Bison formula. I am also switching my cats over to the feline Taste of the Wild because I kept catching them eating the dog's food!

Right now we're transisitioning from Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul to Solid Gold Bison-Just a wee bit (small kibble for small dogs). So they are getting 1/2 and 1/2. They also get 1/4 tsp of Missing Link supplement each meal. I give fresh fruit once in a while like banana, watermelon, peaches and plums and canned pumpkin which they love.

Also once in a while I give Merrick canned venison.

I am wondering about allergies. Olivia scratches a lot when she sneaks Mary Sue "Nutrish" which has corn which I learned this morning is not a good thing for dogs. Thats a kick about cats eating dog food.
I appreciate these recs. Peggy

Solid Gold Wee Adult was rated 10/10 on Susan Peters Hub. Why are you switching off Chicken Soup? TIA Peggy

The dogs like both but I like the idea of feeding bison over beef/chicken because from what I've been reading bison are allowed to free range and aren't fed antibiotics, better for the environment over cattle, and "Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul" is just such a goofy name . Also the SGB's kibble is even smaller than Chicken Soup. I have a yorkie, min pin, and Boston Terrier and they need small kibble although Chicken Soup was manageble for them.

Horseshowmon mentioned Taste of the Wild which is another one I considered however the store I go to only had the kitty version so I chose SGB.
Feeding wild meat Venison/Elk etc is thought to be better for dogs with allergies I think I've read.

Eagle Pack

Hi Peggy!
Congrats on your new furry friend! :)

We feed our fur-babies (dog/cats) Eagle Pack. It's meat meal protein based (as opposed to grains/wheats) with no added hormones and antibiotic/herbicide free. There are also added nutritional supplements. Not sure if this matters to you or not but it's also made in America and not contracted out to other companies. It comes in regular and holistic formulas (dry and wet).

Our animals LOVE it! My hubby adopted a dog once years ago who was very sick and over-weight, and within a month or two of Eagle Pack, he was fit and healthy as can be! (Not saying it's a "cure-all", but it definitely has health benefits!)

Here is a link if you're interested in doing further research:

Hope this helps! :)

one other reason I'm going to Solid Gold Bison is it is rated higher than Chicken Soup. This topic came up about a month ago. I posted something on this link see reply #18. It is a really long post but at the end of it various dogfoods are assigned a grade based on the ingredients or lack of ingredients.

I was wondering if that was the one I posted, I was getting ready to post it again. I will reiterate what someone else touched on though. Grains really have no place in a dog's diet. Also, whle they can benefit from some of the natural stuff in fruits and veggies (especially the fiber that's in pumpkin-this is an unvaluable cure for runny stool), dogs are carnivores. Raw (as in meat and bones) is the best thing to feed dogs. IMO

Yes, you originally posted this way back in this thread. Thankyou, I have this printed off at home.
The 1st dog food listed is only available by mail order btw and I didn't really want to deal with that.

Keeley had a horrible reaction when I transitioned her from Pro Plan puppy turkey/barley to the adult chicken/rice (lamb/oatmeal was ok) I switched to a lower grain/corn free, but still with rice and she didn't have the facial swelling/obvious reaction, but seemd itchy quite often. Then she went from eating as soon as I set food out to letting it sit for hours...maybe until she was too hungry not to eat? :( I switched to the TotW and much less itchy (fleas and skeeters are terrible this year even with professional treatment so I think the itchies now are from that, not ingestion) and devouring her food again. It would be so much easier if they could just TELL us what they liked and needed! :p
Good luck! It's a bit of trial and error, but you'll find the right fit for your fur babies!

I appreciate the info. Both pooches have had Revolution this month and will until late fall. One thing I do not want to do is transition a bunch of times...Peggy

Hey, my dog used to be fed Evo dry food when she was a puppy by the previous owner but I switched her off it because the protein content was pretty high for a non-puppy and I was worried about her liver. I'm doing Natural Balance right now, which is still a good brand just not as expensive as some of the other ones people mentioned, and she loves it and it has done well for you. I used to mix it with the Evo to wean her off of the Evo and I found her eating the NB stuff before getting to the Evo. I personally like this site: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/

Thats Dick VanPatten right? I am looking at that one...the web site has a place you can type in the package numbers to check for recalls. They seem to do a lot of testing also. Is it human grade? Which formula do you use? TIA Peggy

Yeah, that's Dick VanPatten. I first started my dog on the AMP stuff and she did well with that and I got the Ultra Premium big bag and that's what she's eating now. I don't know if its a combination of her being in a better environment (exercised, not jammed up in a crate all day, etc) and the food, but she's really doing pretty well since we've gotten her -- even her former owner came by and raved how well she was doing. I believe the meat based stuff is human grade. One of the concerns by the dog food analysis site was that it was good ingredients but not enough meat but I try to give her meat based stuff to in the week to balance it out. I'm sure Wellness and Timberwolf Organics make a superior product actually, but with the Natural Balance stuff, I'm still getting pretty decent quality stuff, I feed my dog other healthy vegetables and meets, and its a bit more affordable this way especially with the coupons and sales from Petco. HTH.
