Chris,
If I don't have an iPod how can I use the new software? The idea of the whole thing sounds great and I would love to use it but I don't have an iPod and don't plan to buy one. I would like to be able to view it on my TV, would this be posible? I do not have a DVD burner at this time but may get one if it is needed so I can use the software. Any help would be appreciated!!!
Thank you for all that you do,
Julie

You could always watch it on your computer, but you really will need to purchase either an IPOD or Apple TV to take full advantage of the software and to watch on your TV. Though IPOD's and Apple TV are not cheap today, prices will eventually dramatically drop in the future.

I think there was a mention of it being used with a Zune also, another type of mp3 player I believe. Also if your computer has a tv hookup then you wouldn't need the ipod or whatever. Again these are things I have read in the forums and such.

It's disappointing to hear this will be Apple specific. IMO iPod are simply over priced and over time, unreliable. You'll be excluding those of us who choose, for whatever reason, not to buy Apple products. (BTW, there are other similar products out there already far more affordable than Apple/iPod and have solid ratings).

The application is not Ipod specific. You can use any MP4 player you like. You can even use a Zune, but the current video resolution is not as good as an Ipod. Zunes also have to convert the MP4 file into wmv files.

What kind of timeline is planned for this transition?

I have to say I am not happy to hear about this because I have just now gotten used to having a DVD player. I'm not interested in spending money on yet another piece of technology that I would only use for these workouts.

I hope that you will continue to produce DVDs that can be played on the TV for several years just as you continued to produce VHS tapes for a while until everyone was able to transfer to using a DVD player.

I know people love technology but it's just not my thing, and having to purchase and learn how to use another new gizzmo will probably keep me from buying future workouts.

I don't have an ipod either, and I personally don't feel it's fair:) Why do we have to purchase expensive products to be able to workout with Cathe? Me, I prefer DVD's (old skool I know) I wish Cathe would give us options, oppose to its this way or no way, but if she doesn't, its fine, I'm still her number one fan :) Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to afford all these fancy gargets.

Thank you. I do realize that you can use this on other players but am disappointed that the quality and features will suffer. Unfortunately it is an iPod world out there and not all us choose iPod.

As I understand it, the DVD format will still be readily available until the vast majority no longer purchase them (much like with the VHS). So if you choose not to purchase a new gizmo you can still purchase a copy of the DVD. You may also be able to download the workout to your computer and burn yourself a DVD copy if you have the right tools--not sure what SNM says on that. I know you can download Cardio Coach and burn yourself a CD copy if you so choose (as long as it is within copyright boundaries).

Beavs :) :)

Thank you, not really sure whats going on, guess I have to wait and see. As long as I can purchases Cathe newer workouts and use what I already have. I'm cool with that!:)

I am glad I'm not the only one who isn't terribly excited about going this route. I hope the complete transition is a slow one. I live on a farm in the country and DSL has still not gotten to everyone. I am one of those fortunate people to get it first, because we live on a US highway where the cable is. However, it is not reliable or particularly as fast as I thought it would be. My son got a video ipod. His grandfather's computer was the only one that could support iTunes (I think it's a RAM issue), and when he went to download a movie (Grandpa lives on the farm too), it took 15 hours.

My plead to Chris is to take your time to phase out the DVDs. I will certainly continue to buy that way for some time to come, since it looks like I will need to either update my computer or buy a new one, an iPod, and hopefully our internet connection will catch up with the rest of the world. :7

We will continue to sell DVDs as long as people buy them, but like VHS tapes DVDs will eventually be replaced by a newer technology. Even the TV you currently watch your workouts on will eventually no longer work and will have to be replaced with a HD unit. Likewise we will eventually have to start filming in HD and change the aspect ratio of our workouts from 4:3 to 16/9. This will be very costly to us too. One HD camera currently cost $100,000, which is 5 times the cost of a normal professional video camera.

When we first released our DVDs several years ago we heard the exact same arguments we hear today. Back then DVD players cost around $300 to $400. Nowadays DVD players can be purchased for $50 and most people own at least one player. Apple TV and Ipod workouts will offer many advantages and conveniences to the consumer and as time passes the prices of the hardware will dramatically drop just as DVD players once did. Since producers will be able to sell their product directly to the consumer the middleman will be cut out… and since there will be no DVD to duplicate or packaging/shipping cost (better for the environment too), the video will be able to be sold for a lot less. The savings in going to an all digital format will more than offset any cost of purchasing the necessary hardware.

You will also have the advantage of being able to watch any TV show you like at the time of your own choosing without commercials. You will also no longer need to go to the video store to rent a movie or have to worry about returning the DVD to the store.

Digital downloads is not a concept we invented nor is it exclusive to our workouts. Eventually, digital downloads will be the way you watch all of your workouts and TV shows/movies. This change will not happen overnight and will take several years, but it is going to happen. DVDs still “presently”offer better clarity than most digital downloads and are not going to disappear overnight, so you have some time to embrace the new technology.
:)

Thanks, Chris!!! :) Your post helps me understand what is taking place in the future. I'm glad there is going to be time to adjust to it.

I'm going step out on a limb here and agree with Chris and SNM. I'm so intimidated myself to this new technology. To get over myself and my fear, I bought my first iPod this spring, but couldn't afford to get the video iPod, so I had to settle for the Nano, which only lets me upload music and photos to it. At the time, I thought, what a great way to introduce myself to this technology. Not even 6 months later, I love it, love it, love it! Now I really want a video Ipod.

I know its intimidating to think that all DVDs will be a thing of the past, much like records/LPs, 8 track tapes, cassette tapes, and VHS tapes are now, but I'd rather take the new technology, learn it and try it, just like I have been doing for the last 20 years by converting from cassette to CDs, from VHS to DVDs, and so on. The evolution of technology is inevitable, and I think that is clear just by what has happened in the last 50 years. Has anyone seen the new coffee table computers that Microsoft is working on? (Just Google search coffee table computer, you'll get loads of info). I mean, geez! Someday my kids will be ordering takeout from their coffee table just by pointing to a menu and placing their credit card on the table. And then what will happen for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren? They will be complaining just like we are today because new technology has made their coffee table computer obsolete. I've learned to swallow my pride and stomp on my stubborn attitude when it comes to technology. I've learned to just run with it.

So, in sum, I welcome any new technology that SNM will offer in regards to their fitness videos, but hope that they consider those who are not as comfortable with the technology by continuing to offer DVDs for as long as possible.

As I always tell my DH, just smile and nod and save the rest for God.

If you are looking for an iPod alternative that will play MP4, check out the Archos. Here is the link to amazon for the archos options.

While I love my ipod, I have great respect for Archos. My 4 year old Archos still works great. This is a wonderfully engineered product that has a clearer, larger screen than the ipod and is rugged. It is very easy to use and in my opinion less prone to software glitches. Many models also allow you to record TV programs to the device directly. It is just not as "cool" a brand or in looks as the iPod.

Other portable multimedia brands exist that will play MPEG4 (sometimes just called MP4). You just need to browse for a brand that plays this format and also either has an AV cable in the box, or available separately to connect to the TV. Many of them are cheaper than the ipod.

I download YogaToday MP4 files and burn them to DVD. I use Nero software to do this. There are several software packages available that will similarly let you convert DVD to MP4 such as iCloneDVDmobile. This program lets you specify the brand and model of your multimedia device and will convert the DVD to the right format. However, unless you are moderately tech savvy I wont recommend this.
